This informational book about space and specifically the Apollo missions is fun and interesting. Both children and adults can find something to learn from this beautifully illustrated and informative book.

I, like many others, am curious about the space race, the moon landings and the history of space travel. This gem of a book is brilliant. It answered more questions than I realised I had.
With the 50th anniversary of the moon landings fast approaching, books about space travel are becoming more and more popular.
This book will take you from the first moon landing with the famous lines "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind", all the way to the last Apollo mission several years later. Sadly, I was unaware of just how many men had travelled, landed on and explored the surface of the moon. This book will continue the journey of these brave men into the history books. I found it fascinating to read about what scientific experiments they were doing, the amount of rocks they brought back and the danger of moon dust to their suits.
The illustrations are superb, with a real historical feel to them. I found myself studying the control centre one looking at the fine details and imagining the scientists spending days there trying to save Apollo 13's mission and astronauts.
This book belongs on every Non fiction shelf under the topic of space. It is an excellent book full of facts about the landings and the men who landed. I haven't come across a book that explains the landings and gives a brief bio of each astronaut before and I thoroughly enjoyed every page.

I want to thank #netgalley for giving me a copy of #WhenWeWalkedOnTheMoon to review. I thought the illustrations were unique and really enjoyed them. The story gave information about multiple moon missions and biography information about the crew members. I would definitely recommend this book for my students.

When We Walked on the Moon is a superb, accessible introduction to the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union, the moon landings and a concise history of space exploration. July 20, 2019, marks the 50th anniversary of the first humans landing on the Moon on July 20, 1969, as part of NASA's Apollo 11 lunar mission, and many books are being published on the subject, but this is the best I've come across tailored to youngsters. It's beautifully illustrated and each picture compliments the text perfectly.

There are 11 short chapters including Getting to the Moon, The Eagle Has Landed, The Last Men on the Moon and a chapter all about The Astronauts involved in each Lunar Mission. It also covers all of the Apollo missions (11-17). Naturally, the text has some trickier words that youngsters may not have come across previously, however, there is a helpful Glossary section at the very back of the book and all other terminology is explained in layman's terms within the text.

Everything is explained clearly to aid understanding, and I particularly liked that it was interspersed with pull quotes made by some of the astronauts who took part in the missions as I felt this added an emotional side to it all which I welcomed. So if you are looking for a book full of factual information and tidbits of intriguing data then this is a great choice. Just in time for the 50th anniversary of the first man on the moon, this book provides an engaging look at the U.S. Apollo missions. Without maing it sound like ancient history, Long captures the excitement and wonder of man's exploration of space. Direct quotes from the astronauts themselves go beyond the most famous ones we are familiar with and capture the humanity of these heroic figures. Kids will relate to the exuberance and down-to-earth humor of the astronauts reveling in this unique experience. I also particularly enjoyed the little (and new to me) details and insights, Long is able to provide. The clean, striking illustrations add a wonderful dimension to the text. Will definitely include in my elementary library.

A fabulous book for kids and adults on the history of moon missions, perfect for the upcoming 50th anniversary next month of man’s first walk on the lunar surface.

I remember it well as millions —including our whole neighborhood — gathered in front of mostly black and white TV sets to watch Neil Armstrong take “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” I later shared an elevator with the astronaut at the University of Cincinnati where he was teaching engineering. I took a surreptitious peek at his feet (he was notoriously shy) and wondered what it like for him to stand in that historic place.

WHEN WE WALKED ON THE MOON tells the reader that and much more, sharing details of the first mission to the last, including the incredible rescue of Apollo 13. There are separate chapters on each mission, with terrific illustrations, astronaut bios, engaging quotes, quirky stories, plus a timeline and glossary of terms at the back ... a lot of goodness packed into just 80 pages! Highly recommended!

When we walked on the moon is a wonderfully informative book jam packed with so much information!
There is a lot I didn't know about and think children we be fascinated by it all.

The bio on the astronauts and the Apollo mission sections are brilliant, as are the quotes included.
This is perfect for space fanatics and perfect for school projects too.

What a brilliant book this is - would make an ideal gift for a child (6+) interested in space, Moon and our world generally. It is informative, concise, entertaining, beautifully illustrated and full of interesting facts about... people on the Moon!

Food for thought: did you know that rubbish from every successful Apollo missions was left on the surface of the Moon, and will still be lying there on the ground in thousands and thousands of years' time.

What a lovely this book is. It has lots of details about the moon landing from the 1st attempt to the last time. You learn about who went to the moon and what they did. Plus the cost involved. The pictures are clear and I loved that you found out what happened after they landed on the moon. It is easy to read and aimed at 7 upwards. Thank you to netgalley for letting me review this book.

When We Walked on the Moon by David Long is now one of my favorite children's books! It was informative to both children and adults - I learned so many things I had never heard before, the illustrations are beautiful, and it was written in a way that made it easy to understand. I didn't know I was this interested in space and the moon missions until I read this book. I will definitely be putting this book on my shelf and can't wait to share it with others.

When We Walked on the Moon: Discover the Dangers, Disasters, and Triumphs of Every Moon Mission was written by David Long and illustrated by Sam Kalda. The book tells the story of the Apollo Missions, when incredible intelligence, engineering and bravery allowed humans to stand on the surface of something other than Earth for the very first time. From the 1969 first moon landing to the amazing rescue of Apollo 13, each chapter tells the story of a different mission. Humorous details bring the astronauts to life: discover how the astronauts of Apollo 12 were so over-excited when they stepped onto the Moon that Mission Control had to tell them to quieten down, and Shepard (Apollo 14) somehow managed to smuggle a golf club onto his spacecraft!

When We Walked on the Moon is a very informative and well balanced read. I like that the facts are straight forward but given with small humorous and lesser known details that will make every reader smile. The combination of well written and accessible text with illustrations that offer up additional details and make some of the fact more clear is nearly perfect. I found the art style to be very nice, and think that they will help keep the interest of readers that need to break up the text a little. I really enjoyed having all of the missions described in one book, giving a clearer view of the progression of the missions and the unusual moments from each. I learned many things that I did not know, and I think many other readers (of all ages) will find that they learn a great deal from this book as well. I also appreciated the glossary, which might make reading the text even more accessible to some readers.

When We Walked on the Moon is a great book for every readers that has ever dreamt of becoming an astronaut, or that has simply looked at the sky and wanted to know more about what goes into getting there.

A very good book concerning the Apollo Project, quickly taking us to the launchpad of the first successful Saturn 5 launches and Neil and Buzz's trip to the moon. It might need a quick look before final publication, as my proof says the spacesuits were 140kg each, or "nearly as much as the astronauts themselves" – yeah, all three of them perhaps; 140kg is 22 stone and change. I think it could have also afforded a spread for the physics of launch – thrust, escape velocity and suchlike. But in giving each mission equal time we see the real story of the project, from the larks and jokes of Apollo 12 to the near-tragedy of 13. Trivia fans will be surprised by the budget of the moon buggies, and indeed the whole endeavour, but I think all told the text and the level it's pitched at will go down very well with school librarians and their clients. A round-up of all the Apollo astronauts at the end, and a poignant mention of what might eventually happen next, close a very successful volume. A strong four stars.

What an exciting and fun book to read on the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11! This book is full of information and facts about the space missions Apollo 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17. Some of the facts I learned are: 400,000 people worked on the Apollo missions, Apollo 11 launched on July 16, 2069, even at 20,000 mph it took almost three days to get to the moon, and “inside the space suit helmets is a small piece of rough material which could be used to scratch an itchy nose…”

This book has great graphics including a labelled diagram of the parts of the Saturn V Rocket. The book ends with a short bio of each of the astronauts on each mission. And then there is a glossary of some of the terms used and a timeline illustrated with the mission patches of the Apollo missions.

This is a great book for anyone interested in space travel, or space history, kids and adults. As the message on the cover says, “discover the dangers, disasters, and triumphs of every moon mission.”

The Moon Landings was one of, if not the, greatest achievement of the 20th century, and perhaps the most memorable moment in all of human history. When We Walked on the Moon: tells the story of the Apollo Missions, From the first moon landing in Apollo 11 in 1969 to the very last mission in Apollo 17, each chapter tells the story of a different mission.

There are 11 short chapters each covering a separate Apollo mission. It starts with the space race between the USA and USSR and the early unmanned missions. It then covers each of the Apollo missions separately (From Apollo 11 to Apollo 17). The book concludes with brief biographies of each of the astronauts and timeline of the entire Apollo mission plus a helpful Glossary section.

Each chapter of the book is highly informative and packed with numerous facts, quotes, lesser-known humorous details, and some amazing illustrations. All the illustrations in this book are excellent which have made the book memorable.

The best thing about this book is that it covers every Apollo mission equally, which gives us a chance to view the entire Apollo mission in its entirety and the unusual moments from each of the missions. The Apollo 11 mission is well known but we get a chance to learn more about the Apollo 12 or the ill-fated Apollo 13 or the last mission of Apollo 17. It’s fun to learn some amazing facts about some of the lesser talked about missions and the astronauts as well.

July 20, 2019, marks the 50th anniversary of the first humans landing on the Moon and When We Walked on the Moon is a perfect book for both kids and adults to learn more about the moon missions. Overall, it’s a beautifully illustrated book, full of facts and anyone interested in space and the moon missions will enjoy it.

For those readers who are fascinated by space exploration, it does such a superior job of explaining the mechanics of a space flight while infusing the mystery and wonder of it all.
The graphics were superb as was the text. Long did a great job of explaining the science of Apollo flights on a level that could be comprehended by all. Adding the illuminating graphics, as well as concise biographies of the Apollo astronauts, served to enhance and demystify space.
Above all, the beauty of Moon flights was conveyed, making it an all-around useful addition to a space book collection.

My son loves this book! Its got great illustrations that tells stories of the people involved on the Apollo missions. It’s format is great too, love that its by different missions. It has facts and information about the actual mission and happening during that time. Its long so read it one mission at a time, kids will love it and so will you!

This is a really beautifully illustrated, interesting book that tells the stories of the astronauts on the Apollo missions. Each chapter tells of a different mission, with lots of sweet little tidbits that the astronauts passed on, along with the sometimes scary and sobering times. The artwork really added to it for me, along with the layout. This is a fairly long book best suited for older elementary readers. It might get long for a read-aloud for a child who isn't particularly interested in space missions, but would make a great book to read alone. Adults are likely to find lots of interesting new information, too.

Starting with a few pages about the space race, the book quickly gets in to the amazing Apollo missions. Mission details, who the astronauts were, and what they thought are all highlights. The dangers and problems are also there. So are the sentimental things, like Charlie Duke leaving a photo of his family on the moon for future explorers to find.

I recently read a similar book for young readers, but this book really brought out the wonder of discovery, and finishes with a chapter on the legacy as well as what is next. The illustrations are nice and the book ends with bios of all the astronauts featured.

I would not say I enjoyed this book, but at the same time, I did not not enjoy it. The book honestly made no sense, but I found that it was really easier to read,d and I did want to continue reading it. There is no plot, AT ALL. I thought the last book I had read had no plot, but compared to this one, it had the most intricate storyline ever. The characters were also, meh. All they do is drink, the entire time, and talk about nonsense. But I never found myself not liking the book, which is weird, but probably has to do with how short the book is since it wasn't long enough to make me feel like I was wasting my time.
Also after looking at other reviews, there seems to be a consensus that you should not start with this as your first Murakami book, which is exactly what I did so. (less) [edit]

This was a good kid book about NASA, astronauts, and our trips to the moon and space in general. It's nice and simple for the kiddos to keep them interested and excited about it. It doesn't get too technical. I really enjoyed it!

I really enjoyed this book- it's aimed at kids, but I think adults will enjoy it too! I learned things I don't remember hearing before, and the book explained everything clearly in a conversational tone that made reading it more enjoyable. The artwork is gorgeous, and compliments the text nicely. At the end of the book, there are group portraits of the flight crews for the Apollo 11 through 17 missions with a brief bio of each astronaut, and a timeline of the missions and events leading to and following the missions. An awesome book, highly recommended!
