I read this book in two days. It was surprisingly good. The plots initially seemed somewhat simplistic, but they became increasingly intricate as the story progressed. Each time I thought that I knew where the story was headed there was a major plot twist and everything veered off in an entirely different direction that I would not have expected. This kept it interesting. The dialogue and descriptions were vivid and very engaging. "Exile's Redemption" has a unique story, but it seems similar in some respects to Brandon Sanderson's "Stormlight Archive" series (the main character in "Exile's Redemption," Raven, reminds me of the character, Shallan in "Stormlight Archive") and the culture of the exiled Shadow elves is similar to that of the drow in R.A. Salvatore's Dark Elf books.

I "borrowed" this book from KOLL (Kindle Owners' Lending Library) with rather dismal expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised by this selection. "Modern" fantasy nowadays either seems to be either romance dressed up as fantasy, or worse downright porn dressed up as fantasy. Thankfully, this book was neither of those. It was a good old-fashioned action-adventure fantasy. Yes, it's "adult" because of language and a bit of ribald humor, and gory fantasy violence, but it actually had a plot (and a pretty darn good one). Most of what's here is pretty straight-forward fantasy. Some of the contents remind me vaguely of other series (the collars are reminiscent of Jordan's Aes Sedai), but some real thought has gone into many of the details and plot. There were a few spots that could use a bit more editing, and there were quite a few point-of-view shifts, However, overall, I'm pretty impressed. I'm also pretty impressed some of the author's word choices here, given that in so many modern books, English seems to be a dying language. Normally, I tend to shy away from indie books, especially with D.I.Y Daz Studio cover art (this cover art is actually really nice) but this author and this series may have a bright future ahead.

Exile's Redemption introduces us to a world of elven races and their conflicts in interacting with each other and the wider world. The first book of The Chronicles of Shadow, we meet Raven, an exile wanting to find the truth in their history and Wrath, a purported villain returning from 10,000 years of exile to a world he doesn't really understand anymore.

Dunning has not only created an intricate relationship between the races of elves but also touches nicely on issues of historical revisionism, which also provides the intrigue behind what may have happened in the past for the elves to reach the state they are currently in. This is clearly very much an 'establishing' novel, introducing the characters and key political element to be covered, but at the same time, it provides fast-paced action and really enjoyable witty banter. Wrath is a gem! The novel shows plenty of scope for the rest of the series, and it honestly addictive to read. Can't wait for the next one.

Fell in love with this book by the cover! In this book, we are introduced to the Elven race, along with Raven, our main character. Raven is a historian who wants to find out about Umbral, who was banished thousands of years ago. Umbral has actually come back with a new name W'rath. Really enjoyed the plotline and felt connected to both characters. Raven is super badass while W'rath just wants to redeem himself!
