Description

From bestselling and multi-award-winning romantic suspense author Amanda McKinney comes the first book in the steamy, edge-of-your-seat, three-part series, Steele Shadows Security…

Hidden deep in the remote mountains of Berry Springs is a private security firm where some go to escape, and others find exactly what they’ve been looking for.

Welcome to Cabin 1, Cabin 2, Cabin 3…

Cocky, reckless, and die-hard playboy are just a few of the names Gage Steele has been called since he and his brothers left the Marines and moved back to the small, southern town of Berry Springs to take over their father’s personal security firm. On the one-year anniversary of his father’s death, Gage had only two things in mind—endless whiskey and endless women, but what he got was a battered, bruised spitfire stumbling through woods in the middle of the night.

Newly-appointed prosecutor and unapologetic workaholic, Niki Avery has spent her life working toward one goal—never to have to depend on anyone but herself… until the day she gets brutally attacked on the side of the road. Stripped of her Louis Vuitton and her dignity, the fiercely independent ADA must submit to being under the watchful eye of a former Marine, a loose cannon with a temper as scorching as his ruggedly handsome good looks.

As cracks begin to show in the Steele family, including newly discovered evidence that their father’s death was no accident, Gage wrestles with his growing feelings for his client, knowing not only that Niki is off-limits, but together, they were like gasoline and fire—an explosion he wanted nothing more than to ignite in the bedroom. But when a pair of bloody body parts show up at the compound, it becomes clear that Niki’s attacker hasn’t given up and Gage realizes he’ll do anything to keep her safe… even as his own family is spiraling out of control.

There are so many emotions involved in this book, I couldnt put it down. It takes alot for a book to pull all my emotions but this one waas capable of doing that. I would certainly recommend this book to others.

On the way home from a yoga retreat, Niki Avery is run off the road and viciously attacked. Although terribly injured, she is able to get away and find her way through the woods to the Steele Shadows Security compound. Gage Steele, former marine, finds Niki and brings her to safety. Finding out what happened to her, police are called and he takes her to their secure Cabin 1. Niki has overcome a poor and abusive childhood to become a prosecuting attorney. Was her attack a random affair or was someone targeting her? Gage and his brothers are still dealing with the unexpected and suspicious death of their father who began their security company. An exciting beginning to this series with an alpha male and the strong woman who fought and won. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. I literally cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of this series. I loved the characters and the larger story behind the story. The survival instinct as well as the compound is described beautifully and I look forward to catching up with these characters in later titles.

****SPOILERS*****

So this was my first Amanda McKinney book and I was certainly not disappointed in it! It gripped me right from the beginning, all the way to the end!
The story follows the two main characters in a dual POV. I love dual pov’s btw! 😍 Gage Steele and his brothers, all ex marines, are back home after their fathers death a year ago: inheriting his private security firm deep in the remote mountains of Berry Springs. They all deal with his death differently, Gage dealing with it by drinking and having sex with random women. Until a mysterious, battered and bruised girl trips the alarms of their estate.
Niki Avery fights to change her image after her father ruined the Avery name long ago. A workaholic and a feisty girl who makes her own way through life - determined to never have to depend on anyone but herself, gets run off the road and brutally attacked. She finds herself in the hands of Steele Shadows Security - and Gage Steele. Against everyone’s words again it and fighting their own thoughts Niki and Gage can only fight their own temptations for so long!
This book had suspense, romance, comedy, mystery! It had it all! There were a few times where I thought Amanda could have gone deeper into the mystery and played it out longer but all in all, I was very happy with this read! Gage was an interesting character... boozing and using women to his every need. But Niki and her not taking his shit put him in place and straightened him out. Now to figure out the mystery of his dads death! And his brothers....

This was a new to me author and I'm glad I took a chance. This book was very suspenseful all the while keeping the hot turned up to 100%.

Gage was in a tough spot at the beginning of this book. My heart went out for him. He was just trying to deal with his grief the only way he knew how. I felt the most bad for him when his brothers would get on his case. No he wasn't dealing with his grief very healthy but none of them were but he seemed to be the resident punching bag.

I liked when Gage met Niki and she became his focus. While he was interested, he took her safety very seriously. I loved when he took care of her and didn't push her after he found out what had happened. I also liked that he stuck up for her when her brothers were questioning her statement.

Niki is a force to be reckoned with. She had to be strong given the upbringing that she had. I loved how the book portrayed her by showing her fears but not letting them keep her down and fighting back.

I just have to say that ending though......wow!!!

A big thank you to NetGalley and HH Tisevich for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is my first time reading this author. Wow..what a ride!! Kept me on my toes...wondering. It felt a little rushed towards the end. A lot happened very fast. Ending made me sad. I give this 3.5 stars and I will definitely read the next one. It's got romance and a bit.of a mystery.

This was a suspenseful thriller that pulled me in and kept my attention until the end. Gabe and Nicki were strong characters with great chemistry. The only thing I didn't care for was the pages of inner dialogue. Overall, it was still a great read and I would recommend it.

This story of survival and fighting back intrigues the reader. Niki Avery, a local attorney, is attacked and stumbles upon land of the Steele family. They own a private security firm and offer to protect her from someone clearly out to kill her. The characters are flawed but definitely likeable. Each role has a story that the reader wants to learn. I enjoyed this book immensely and can’t wait to read more.

I received an advanced reader's copy of Cabin 1 (Steele Shadows Security) by Amanda McKinney from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was the first book that I have read by Amanda McKinney and I was pleasantly surprised to find an enjoyable new author to follow.

Overall, I enjoyed this novel and I found it to be well written. The primary characters' romantic start was memorable and nicely showcased their chemistry/attraction. I liked the well-crafted characters and the witty banter, plus the action moved along and kept me engrossed.

Cabin 1 is a terrific romantic suspense novel with a killer ending. I wasn’t aware that it was a spin off but it stands well on its own. Action, mystery and love. Well worth the read. Can’t wait for the next installment.

I really really enjoyed this one! Romantic Suspense can really be hit or miss for me - but I think this one had just the right balance of tension and romance. It also had the added role of starting off a series - but I didn't think the character introductions took away from the story at all.

Gage is recently retired from the military and has come home to work the family security business with his brothers following the death of their father. Since that time, Gage has been drinking and having sex to deal with his grief and separation from the military. He definitely has not been handling things in a healthy way.

Niki is one hell of a tough girl. She has worked hard to raise herself up from a life of poverty into a successful prosecutor. When the book starts out we see Niki fighting her way through an attempted rape and assault - where she ultimately kills one of her attackers. Gage finds her in the aftermath of the attack and takes her into the family compound for protection.

Their relationship proceeds at high speed as does the action in the story. I liked Niki a lot - I admired her strength of character and smarts. I think she made a lot of assumptions about Gage - that weren't necessarily off base - but she did allow him to show her he could be a lot more than those assumptions.

Overall - this was a quick read and a great start to the series.

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, but these opinions are all my own.

What a start running for your life. Total intrigue, hard ass male attitude coping with the anniversary of his father's death. 3 other brothers, Security firm working unofficially with law enforcement.
Strong female, kicking ass despite being physically battered and bruised. Mentally not bowing down to anyone. Sparks fly that keep you turning the pages and your fingers crossed for a positive ending. Cliff hanger of an ending. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Someone tried to kill her. Niki is on the run from a killer, when she stumbles on a log mansion deep in the mountains. Gage with his brother owns a security company. When a woman stumbles out of the woods claiming someone is trying to kill her, who does he believe?

I read and reviewed this advanced complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley

This is the first book I've read from this author and I doubt it will be the last.

Niki and Gage are engaging characters. She is the workaholic Lawyer trying to put her fathers shady past behind her. He is the guilt-ridden, grief-stricken son of a billionaire security company owner who is using women and alcohol as a crutch.

There were plenty of twists and turns and storyline was quite gripping and harrowing in places. Yes, Gage did come across as a misogynistic ass at times but I like to think that once he's dried out he is quite likeable. I did feel a bit like thumping him when his first thoughts on finding NIki were how he'd like to "do her" when it was clear she was in some distress. But the protective instincts eventually overrode the douche instincts and he became a hero I could enjoy.

I liked the fact Niki didn't hide her background, she just didn't want to be tarred with the same brush as her dad. Neither Gage not Niki are the clear cut stereotype they believe each other to be and I'm dying to know what happens now - cos that sneak peak at the next book -eeeeeeeeeep!

I've never read Amanda McKinney before, but I know this won't be the last time! Niki was a strong heroine - successful despite her difficult past, and brave in the face of a horrible attack. Fortunate to run into Gage and not something (or someone) worse in the woods after she's attacked, these two have chemistry that's off the charts, and the plot held a suspenseful mystery that had me guessing and unable to put it down.

Great new suspense series!
This is Book one of three.
Nikki is taking a leisurely drive through the mountains when she is unexpectedly attacked. One of her attackers attempts to rape her and Nikki manages to escape and run. Lost, hurt and distraught she ends up stumbling onto the property of Steele Shadows Security, and into their protection. The Steele family isn't sure what to make of her story at first, but they take Nikki under their wing and stop a second attempt at her life. Gage Steele is lost after his father sudden death last year and has been drinking too much and losing himself in too many faceless, nameless women. When he meets Nikki, everything changes and he knows she is the one for him.
Can Gage keep her alive long enough to tell her he loves her, and if he can will she feel the same? Great story, well developed characters and lots of action made this a real page turner. Truly looking forward to book 2.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Great suspense and enjoyed the storyline from page one. The complex relationships between the Steele family combined with Nicki's background and family history of her own kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't put the book down and loved the chemistry between Gage and Nicki. I don't want to give too many details away but a must-read for die-hard romantic suspense fans.

The description for this book is what made me want to read this book, and I was not disappointed. It was action packed, had me hooked from the first chapter and I couldn’t put it down. Loved the story line, the ex-military security firm, the mystery surrounding the father’s death as a backdrop story line that I see going thru the series. This book is about Gage and Nikki. She is run off the road and attacked by two men, after killing one, she’s able to get away and makes her escape that lands her on the Steel Brothers Security Firm lands. Gage is one of the Steel brothers who finds Nikki and brings her back to the main house of the Firm. They put her in Cabin 1 for protection till the man she escaped from can be found. The instant attraction between the two is evident. He is a cocky womanizer who drinks to forget his father’s death and she is a sassy lawyer who takes no crap. Gage has met his match. I’ve not read this author before now and really enjoyed this book; I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.

Cabin 1 is my first book by author Amanda McKinney. OMG!! How have I not read any of her book before? Ms. McKinney has provided readers with a well-written book populated with a spectacular cast of characters. Niki is a lawyer and is attacked after her jeep is forced off the road. Gage and his brothers leave the military after their father's death. Gage and Niki's story is packed with drama, humor, sizzle, action and OMG! suspense. This book captured me at page one and didn't let go until the end. I loved this book and look forward to reading more from Amanda McKinney in the future. Cabin 1 is book 1 of the Steele Shadows Security Series but it can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger. The author does throw a good hook though to have you wanting the next book in your hot little hands.

I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This suspenseful read had great characters and a wonderfully written and intriguing storyline that kept me turning the pages until the very end!

This one kept you guessing throughout. I'm going with murder/mystery/suspense Romance!
Started out hard making your heart pound right along with Niki's, and I had to keep reading at this point. A great storyline with a secondary plot in the background that is chilling.
While I loved the instant attraction between Gage and Niki, how he saved her, and they get their HEA, I was not a fan of the way that zinger cliffhanger came in at the end with the secondary plot. Now I'm unsettled again.
Still a good read, but be prepared to read the rest of the series.

Wow so steamy !! And just what I love from a steamy read !! Can’t wait to read more about the Steele Brothers !!

What an absolutely amazing book with unforgettable characters and a well-written white knuckle, heart-pounding thriller that sucked me in from the very beginning and I couldn't put it down until I read the last word. A great beginning to the Steele Shadows Security Series set in the small southern town of Berry Springs in the Ozarks when the Steele brothers take over their father's personal security firm after his untimely death.
I loved the instant attraction and off-the-charts chemistry between die-hard playboy Gage Steele and newly appointed prosecutor Niki Avery.
This is the first book I have read by Amanda McKinney and don't know how I've missed this gifted author but I can't wait to read more!!! This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys steamy, edge-of-your-seat suspenseful romance.
I received an advance reader copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.

This book grabs the reader from the explosive start! Niki Avery is run off the road and attacked by two men. When one tries to rape her while the other one stands back to watch, she fights back, stabs the first attacker and escapes through the woods. The second man chases her, but she never stops running. She finally loses him and hours later ends up on land owned by the Steele brothers. They find her and give her some much needed aid and a safe place to stay. Gage Steele is the one who initially talks to her and helps her out the most. He's been lost in a haze of booze and women for the past year after his father's death. None of the four brothers have accepted their father's death very well, and all are coping with various less-than-ideal strategies.

Niki has worked hard to overcome her colorful past. She is bright, driven, and motivated to be more than what people have judged her to be. Because of this past, she has an inner core of strength that leaps off the page. Gage, on the other hand, has an outer core of strength, but his inside life is a mess. Being around Niki brings up doubts about what he believes, but it also brings up the strength and courage to rise above his current situation and to use more of his internal strength muscles that have been atrophying. They both help each other to be better people.

This book is a page turner! Clear your calendar for a few hours because you won't want to put this book down once you start it. The brothers have a wonderful bond with each other and the rest of their extended family, which balances the aloneness that Niki deals with on a daily basis. Regardless of her lack of friends, Niki finds strength wherever she can; in fact, a red leaf is one such device infusing Niki with courage and strength when she needs it most. It's beautiful the way the author touches on this in a couple of different places in the book and again at the end.

There are a few threads that are left unexplored at the end of the book. This story is self-contained, yet there are tendrils that will most likely be followed in subsequent books about these brothers. All-in-all this is an amazing start to what appears to be a fantastic series.

This book gets you from the first page of Niki running to save herself. It has you turning the pages to find out her story and learn more about the brothers Steele. Out first introduction being Gage and he definitely gets your heart racing in a very good way. Suspense, Romance, Intrigue, Sex, Betrayal and an stunning backdrop, this book really does have it all. Amanda McKinney keeps you on you toes and turning the pages to read more. And I love a good series so cant wait for Cabin 2 and Cabin 3, maybe the Steele's will build more cabins to keep it going.
Thank you to NetGalley, Amanda McKinney and HH Tisevich for the ARC

Cabin 1 is the first book in the Steele Shadows Security #1 by Amanda McKinney. This series is based in the small, southern town of Berry Springs. The Steele brother’s father has died and the sons have returned from their lives to help take over the business. As with the first books in a series, we are introduced to a number of new characters quickly. One of the characters is Gage Steele, an ex military member who has been trying to medicate himself unsuccessfully with drink and women. His brothers are worried about him and want him to step up.

Niki Avery was pushed off the road and attacked. She fought back and ran and somehow ended up at the Steele Security property. Gage was assigned to help protect her. The mystery is not a straight line and the culprits are not clear. Niki is sass and argumentative and not good at taking orders - even from sexy, overly macho, seriously hot Gage!

Cabin 1 by Amanda McKinney was a fast, HOT read. I enjoyed the storyline and while I was not overwhelmed by the main character at first, Gage grew on me. Cabin 1 was a good read.

This was filled with suspense, right from page one! Nicki is having a very bad night-run off the road, being attacked by two masked men and fighting for her life. She fights & runs for her life into the woods, hoping to survive the night. The only good thing is that the woods lead her to Gage and his brothers who make up Steele Shadows Security. Their compound is on the mountain, and they find her, bring her in, clean her up and help her. Protect her, although that job does not end when they find her. Because someone keeps trying to kill her. And in the middle of all that, Gage and Nicki are combustible together. Every chapter was a page turner, there were so many different angles to dissect, and mysteries going on. I very much enjoyed this!! And with the way it left off, I’m gonna need to read the next one!

Gage Steele is a playboy to the inth degree and since his father's death, an inconsolable drunk.

Niki Avery, ADA, gets attacked on the side of the road and wanders around until she gets lost in the woods where the Steele Shadows Security team (and brothers) live.

Under Gage's protection, both Avery and Gage inch closer and closer to the personal fire that has been building.

This is a hot fun sassy book that I highly recommend.

Running for her life after an attack, Niki runs onto the Steele brothers' property and it's instant attraction between her and Gage. The brothers run a security company started by their father who had died a year earlier - that is the overall mystery of this series - whether or not their father died of natural causes.

While I enjoyed the book and the romance, what struck me was how the book seemed to start at a good pace building up the mystery of Niki's attack and then suddenly switched gears and everything went really fast. Her mystery was solved quick and I think the book only takes place over a couple of days and she and Gage, a known ladies man, go from hello to I love you in a short amount of time.

As for the end of the book - I hate cliffhangers. I was definitely surprised by the end and honestly given how these brothers supposedly have this safe, impenetrable fortress for their clients, people seem to sneak in and out and come and go with little detection.

Thanks to the publisher for a review copy via NetGalley.

WOW! What a book!! Honestly did not expect to love it as much as I did but there were so many twists and turns, I had to finish it all in one night!! So much suspense and the characters are all so likeable! I’m already ordering the next in the series.

I was on the edge of my seat the whole time trying to figure out who and what! I loved how they brought in this family that has secluded themselves away from other people, yet she happened to stumble upon trying to get away from her pursuer. I hope there will be other books in this series

A fast paced, action packed, slow burn romance that I could not put down and wished was longer! The characters are detailed and real, the plot was well worked with twists and turns I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait to see what happens next and with the other Steele brothers!

OMG! This book was an emotional roller coaster that ended on a cliff hanger and I cannot wait to read the next one. This is the story of Nikki and Gage. Nikki is an attorney who gets attacked and Gage finds her running in the woods on his property. Gage is one of the Steele brothers behind Steele Shadows Security. As the brothers and police try to solve Nikki's attack, the oldest brother and Gage are looking into the death of their father the previous year. This story will have your adrenaline pumping and you won't believe the end.

Thank you, Netgalley and HH Tisevich for allowing me to read a copy of this book. I am hereby leaving my freely given opinion and all observations are strictly my own.

I did not know the author yet and was curious about the book. I will not repeat the blurb here, because everyone can read it himself in the description.
The story immediately captivated me - even if I sometimes would have wished for a little more time (i.e. a slightly longer book) to develop the individual characters better. Some of the plot was just too unbelievable (I don't believe that after a robbery you waste even a single thought on eroticism - you need a "healing process" first). But all in all the story was captivating (even if unbelievable - but it's fiction...) and I'm already waiting for Cabin 2.

Holy crap what a good book action from page 1! I seriously couldn't put it down!!! Such a page turner... I totally didn't expect it to end the way it did... Two strong willed people like Gage and Niki.. Sparks are bond to fly with these two...

The first book in the Steele series was a great start! Gage and Avery were perfect for each other. They are both strong minded and attracted to each other. There is a secondary story that looks like it will be continued throughout the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for sending me a copy of this book to review.

Although a little problematic in places (a sexual assault victim wanting to immediately sleep with her knight in tortured armour the day after her assault - however, I am fully aware people deal with things in different ways so each to their own) I really enjoyed the story. I enjoyed the side story to do with the Steele brothers dad, Duke. And I did enjoy the romance between Gage and Niki. I also adore the brotherly love between Gage, Axel, Gunner and Phoenix.

I think Amanda's writing style is fantastic and my goodness does she know how to make sure you come back for more. That ending...

I'll definately be picking up the rest in this series. I need to know what happens next.

This was a good story with plenty of action. I liked the characters & would definitely like to read about the other Steele brothers.

The only let down for me is the insta love, just not believable that two people can truly fall in love within a couple of days

This was a great romantic suspense story. It grabbed me from the beginning, and didn’t let go. The heroine is very well written—smart, spunky, and sexy. The hero is appealing in the macho, alpha male, and not much else way. The suspense was well-written,and built nicely to a grand, if a bit rushed finish. Overall a great book, 4 stars because it felt like it could have a little more meat in it. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher. This is my freely given, honest review.

This is the first book on the Steele Shadow Security series. It leaves wanting more. The book ends with What?? moment and unanswered questions. I am going to be reading Cabin 2 to get the answers.
Amanda McKinney wrote a fast past romantic suspense that make you want to read more.
Blurb

Cabin 1 is the first book in the 3-part Berry Springs spinoff series, STEELE SHADOWS SECURITY—Think of it as Berry Springs' darker, grittier, steamier, BAD BOY brother. Please note: You do not need to read the Berry Springs Series first.

Well it has been quite a time since I have read A romantic Suspense novel that starts so suddenly and drags you right in til the very last page! The twists and turns have you on the edge of your seat as you follow the race against time to find out who is trying to kill Niki before they actually do. Can’t wait for the next book in the Series!!!

This post is going to take a look at Cabin 1 written by Amanda McKinney. It is the first book in a 3 book spin-off series (Steele Shadows Security) to McKinney's Berry Springs series. It was originally published in September 2019, and the Kindle edition came out December 2019. I received an eARC copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Cabin 1 introduces the reader to Niki Avery, a local, young prosecutor who is attacked while driving home from a yoga retreat. Two men run her Jeep off the road and attempt to sexually assault her, but in self-defense Niki is able to fight back, and kills one of her attackers. While the other one runs to his truck to grab a gun to kill Niki, she is able to escape and a chase through the dense woods of Berry Springs.

Niki runs and runs until she can't anymore, but what she doesn't realize, is that she's run onto the Steele family's property. The family of 4 former marine brothers head out onto the mountain in search of whatever, or whoever set off the security alarm.

Gage Steele finds her. Although at the beginning of the night he had only wanted to drink whiskey all night, and find a woman to take his mind off the fact that it is the one year anniversary of his father's death, he also wants to treat this woman right. He helps her get cleaned up, and becomes overwhelmingly protective of her.

Niki is assigned to Cabin 1, and Gage is assigned to be her security detail until they can end the threat to her life. Through their time together they become increasingly attracted to each other, and they build an intense relationship with lots of steamy scenes.

I really enjoyed this action packed romance novel and I will definitely be taking up the rest of this spin-off series, as well as keeping an eye out for the Berry Springs series by McKinney. I hope you'll pick up a copy yourself!

Happy reading :)

This one is intense, full of action love story. Great story that leaves you on your toes and you want to find what is true and whatnot, who is the perpetrator. Both Gage and Niki are great and easy to love. I love Niki and her badass attitude and her will to live and fight back. I loved how their story builds and becomes stronger.
I volunteered to review an ARC of this book for NetGalley

A great intense romantic suspense story of intrigue, espionage, murder, spying and protection. Of course a deep love is wrapped up in the adventure too. Making this a great rollercoaster of a read.

With a happy ever after ending in this romantic escapade.

What a fascinating book. I was impressed by the storyline and the characters were all well written and complex. Where there are complex storylines combined with intriguing characters the reader experience is magnified tremendously. To have a book that is well written as well as entertaining is a delight. Reading is about escaping your world and entering another one. Here I forgot about my own life and was immersed in the world created by the author. I would recommend this book.
