Advance Praise
"Virginia has combined entertainment with facts. The skunk kits entertain the reader with their charging games and skunk soccer while teaching us about the development of young skunks. I loved the ending!" —Margie Smith, music educator, Denton, Nebraska
"I loved the addition of Olivia to Doc's yard family! The kits are very entertaining, but where will they go next? I loved the facts, entertainment, and possibilities of future adventures." —Staci Day, elementary educator, Aurora, Colorado

This is a fun story of adventure and intertwines facts into it. Letting kids learn new things with entertainment is my favorite type of stories. There are opportunities for learning new words (myopic!) which my only feedback would be to provide the definition of some of these bigger words immediately after it. I love increasing a child's vocabulary in 'real time' so I love this author is doing that! Watching my daughter (9) read it was sweet as she laughed often and was curious about some of the new facts and words that came from reading this story.
Thoughts from the Mini-Me-Reviewer: This story is about the animals that live with Doc the Vet - or as the kids call him: The Animal Fixer. There was a skunk that was nearsighted (myopic!) and Doc made her bonnet glasses so she could see better and watch her kits. I liked this book was about animals and their family. I loved that there was a lot of different animals. I mostly liked King Tut the Siamese cat. I would recommend this book to around seven year olds as there were only five chapters - so its a good book to read and be introduced to chapter books.
Margie Surprises Doc is enjoyable for early readers as well as pre-readers who are sharing this wonderful book with their parents. Virginia White brings her skills as a multi-tasking writer to create an engaging story that also informs readers about a variety of animals including skunks and opossums, introduces new vocabulary, and provides valuable lessons about inclusion all in the same book. Everyone will want to join Margie and her family and friends in Doc's backyard.
Margie Surprises Doc by Virginia K. White is another great story by a super children's writer! Virginia continues to carry on her tradition of introducing new and interesting characters. In this book we meet Olivia who makes her way into Doc's backyard. As always Virginia introduces characters that extend on her previous themes. This time Olivia helps the young reader learn about team work and inclusion. My grandson, Gabe, has been a young fan of Mrs. White's books since the beginning. When we finished this read, once again Gabe asked, "When is the next book coming out? High praise from a young reader indeed!

This book is filled with adorable animals that can help kids learn about them in a fun way. (Did you know that skunks are myopic?) I also appreciate that there are a few vocabulary words for them to learn along the way. And that the animals in Doc's yard form a little family of sorts that shows kindness to a newcomer. There's something for everyone!
Ms. White always keeps the audience interested with her unique and colorful characters. The opportunities to talk about teamwork and all the lessons that go along with it is a great story. This would be great for any yong readers and a great book to bring inside the classroom.
