Description

As the last dragon shifter, I live alone, hiding in one of Earth’s sacred deserts. My human handlers tell me that I have no parents, no name, and no purpose other than to train for battle and one day become a vessel for the reincarnation of Chimera, the greatest dragon shifter of all. Sadly, Chimera’s rebirth will mean my own death. But my handlers say this sacrifice is a noble fate that will rebuild the dragon shifter world.

I shall die on my seventeenth birthday. That’s five days from now.

Then I hear music thumping across the desert. I take my mortal form, follow the sound, and find humans dancing in what they call a rave. There is a stage and a rock band. One thing quickly becomes clear: Unlike the audience, the musicians are dragon shifters, just like me. And one of them, the guitar player Rhodes, makes my knees turn watery. The lead singer, Kaps, has something strangely familiar about her.

It all adds up to one conclusion: My handlers lied to me. I’m not the last of my kind. Memories reappear. I had parents once. Portia and Tempest. I even had a name. Zinnia. Perhaps I have a reason to live as well. I step past the dancing humans to confront the players.

I will find out the full truth, no matter what.

This book starts out with Zinnia, or Zin, at age 9. She is supposed to be taking a nap with her sisters Kaps and Huntress, but naps are for losers and she is planning to make her escape to go meet LT, or Rhodes, so they can make music and magic together. Everything seems to go wrong and this loving family is separated for what seems like forever. I love the family involvement, especially the ending, it shows true love between family members. One of my favourite parts of this book is, of course, the ultra-romantic love story that literally beats all other love stories. Not to mention, the magic of music. Music is very healing for people suffering trauma and other things in real life so I thought this showed a new and brilliant perspective from Christina Bauer. To make something that is so meaningful and healthy for so many people into a force of good in this fantasy series is just amazing. Bravo!

****

I was really looking forward to the story of Zin, as after finisihing Portia & T I was unsure how the story continues. This was one of the reasons I was so looking forward what’s about to come and what fate has in store for Portia & T but also how Zin ended up forgetting her family and so.

What I can say for sure, I was not getting disappointed. The story was fun to read and I really enjoyed Zin, especially her way of talking (I mean, “You Di**”) but it was also so lovely to refer to Rhodes as “my Rhodes” nearly immediately. You really can feel what Zin is feeling, the author’s writing was amazing again. Zin was separated from her family and friends for quite some time but she’s strong, so strong, and once she met Rhodes, oh my Rhodes, it only got better. He felt from the beginning that they have a one-of-a-kind connection, even though he didn’t know it’s Zin.

This made the story fun to read because as a reader you obviously know the background but joining Zin & Rhodes on their story to figure it out for themselves as well was great. I did enjoy the other members of the band and hope to read more about them in the next book.

Speaking of which, the next book “Rhodes” is already on my list, because the ending Zin & Rhodes have right now is not yet satisfactory for me – I need to see that they get their well deserved HEA.
And I must admit, and I am sorry T, but Rhodes is just the best dragon-shifter so far :)

Christina Bauer has once again created a completely different character in the “Angelbound Origins” series and I love her and her name is: Zinnia.

The lines are clear for Zinnia, it is either black or white. She was taught one way. When she finds out she has been lied to then she sets out to find out what is real. This takes tremendous strength and courage. Bauer creates these amazing young women that are strong, risk-taking, and who make mistakes yet get back up again.

Bauer provides humor, action, and some really funny one-liners. Zinnia is a heroine to root for. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
