A Fine Collection

I read this as an ebook downloaded ARC, so can't really comment on the presentation quality of this book in its hardback form. This is intended to be an elegant "gift edition", so I suppose getting a look at a physical copy would be important to a potential purchaser.

The collection itself appears to be complete. The first line poem index is handy, and a brief collection of reviews and comments by Poe's literary contemporaries was quite interesting. The biographical essay by Daniel Stashower didn't cover any new ground, but it was well written, informative, and served as a fine introduction to the contents.

So, Poe certainly doesn't need to be reviewed by me. As to this book, it appears to be a quality effort.

This book is exactly what its title declares.  Following an introduction, readers will find all of the Poe that they could possibly want.  Here are tales both well-known and new to discover, along with the poems including some of my favorites including The Bells, Annabel Lee and The Raven. 


I have a digital ARC of this book.  The on sale copy will be a gift book edition that promises to be quite nice.

A fabulous collection of classic Edgar Allen Poe tales and poems! Highly recommended to all ages (maybe not little kids, lol).

This book is definitely an undertaking - but a worthy one! Containing all known stories from the Master, Edgar Allen Poe, this book clocks in at a hefty 855 pages. I really like this version, which contains an index of first lines, so you can find your favorite stories if you've forgotten the titles. It also has a timeline of his life which is extremely interesting, and Daniel Stashower's introductory essay is really good.

The cover of this book looks beautiful and I'd love to check it out in person (I read the digital version). It would be a great gift to a friend, or yourself, and works for either a Poe newbie or a fan who has yet to read some of his lesser known works. After all this time, my favorites remain The Black Cat and Murder at the Rue Morgue, I also love the Mask of the Red Death. This book has them all and lots of new-to-me stories that it was very exciting to read for the first time. I will say it's quite an intense experience to read all these amazing stories at once - I had more success once I started chipping away at them and giving myself some time to think and read other stuff in between. This is a nerdy aside but I also really liked the font of this book which somehow seemed perfect for Poe - not sure what font it was but it had a little flourish to it without being intrusive to the reader, which felt just right for the stories I was reading.

Overall a really lovely and useful compilation. I can't wait to see the hard copy of the book (I am a "holding the book in my hands" person at heart) but loved reading this electronic collection as well.

How can you critique the master of the macabre? The answer is .you don't. Instead you tell people that he produced the best short story and poem collection in the world. If you're a Poe fan you have favorites. Mine are The Telltale Heart and The Haunted Palace. If by chance you haven't read any of them yet, here is your chance. Lose yourself and a little of your mind in these remarkable and timeless classics. And if you think they are out of date, think again. They are just as powerful now as when he first gave them to us. This is a don't miss under any circumstances collection of treasured stories by the true master.

In this book we find all the stories of the teacher Edgar Allen Poe, in addition to having 855 pages. In I like that it has an index in which to guide you in stories and their poems, in my case it was a great help to find those that many years ago I had read and remembered little.
This book works for both those who already knew Poe and those who want to delve into the world created by the author, in my case the stories that are still my favorites are The murders in the rue morgue and black cat, and his poems The raven, in this book I was able to enjoy all its stories and not only the best known and it was like discovering a new world from the author, it is beautiful to have this collection and enjoy the stories at your own pace or read the ones that interest you first , or go in order as it appears in the index, in my case it was an intense but very pleasant read.
A lovely and useful read, a version that would look beautiful on a shelf.

This is another complete edition that might not be ideal for a public library (because it is so huge at over 850 pages), but would be a great present or addition to a home library.

I felt I had a love/hate relationship with this book. I am surprised that it has taken me so long to sit and read a complete work, but have to admit that I didn't enjoy all of it. Some of the stories are really hard work, dense with technical and effusive prose that tries even the saintliest patience. I did feel I got a better understanding of the author, his interests and influences but also the darker aspects of personality so widely known. I would still call this a must read for any fans of horror and mystery because without Poe these genres would not have taken such great leaps forward.

If you love Edgar Allan Poe, then this book is an excellent addition to your library. I loved it from beginning to end! I thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allen Poe published by Quarto Publishing Group-Rock Point is a very complete set of all of Poe’s work including is one full length novel (which I did not know existed until this edition.)

This book is a little hard to rate because I love Poe’s work and my favourite story or poem by him is always changing. What seems to be super special about this book is the physical copy that will be getting released which has deckled edges, foiling detail, and a ribbon marker.

I did enjoy the introduction, timeline, sources, and suggested reading at the back of this edition.

My one suggestion is that I would have liked to have seen some illustrations among all the writing as well.

For fans of Poe or for someone looking to introduce a future Poe lover to his work, this edition is worth checking out.

A definitive collection of Poe that is especially great for middle grade and high school-age kids who love Poe and want to get into his writing. Also great for anyone interested in getting through all of Poe and learning a bit of backstory along the way. Very readable and very well organized.

The macabre and gruesome gothic style of Edgar Allen Poe is timeless and the author holds his place as one of the greatest horror authors. Ever! There are various works of Edgar Allen Poe available providing complete coverage of his short stories, poems, essays and his novel. This latest collection, The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allen Poe, provides an introduction from Daniel Stashower who gives a very interesting overview of Poe’s life and his bizarre and unsettling death. His death followed a strange set of events where he was found collapsed outside a tavern in Baltimore and then treated in the Washington College Hospital for drunkenness where he remained delirious and agitated suggesting something untoward happened him, until he passed away, after muttering “Lord help my poor soul.”

Poe’s fascination with dark, sinister tales gives us classics such as The Pit and the Pendulum, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Black Cat.

Along with the seventy-three short stories, essays and a novel, he wrote forty-nine poems which were often fuelled with his alcoholism and difficulty in finding a female partner. His poem Annabel Lee may have been inspired by four different women he was with during that period. His most famous poem is the brilliant Raven

“And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted—nevermore!”

As a collection this version is complete with his short stories and poems, the introduction provides a fascinating insight into Poe and there is a useful timeline for his works.

My big criticism of this Advanced Reader Copy is that it is only available for the Adobe Digital Editions application or the new NetGalley app, both of which are impossible to read 'PDF' files on a smartphone and are not available for the Kindle. I already own a complete set of works of Edgar Allen Poe so for the stories I could switch to that version and use a computer to read the pdf file for the Introduction and other material specific to this publication.

The rating is difficult because for the literary contribution of Edgar Allen Poe it would be 5 stars but for the practical use of the electronic book, it would be 2 stars.
