Description

He needs a payday. He’ll settle for payback.

Betrayed and left to rot on the edges of the galaxy, Caspian Robeaux is deep in debt and stuck flying courier missions in an old rustbucket he can barely keep afloat. His only friends are an annoying robot named Box and a bottle of booze.

It’s a far cry from his once-promising military career, but Cas stopped caring a long time ago.

Things start to look up, though, when a stranger arrives and offers a lucrative job that Cas can’t refuse, with a payday big enough to change his fortunes permanently. His luck gets even better when Cas learns that the job might offer him the one thing he wants more than his next drink: A chance to clear his name.

But nothing in his life is ever that simple, and for a man trying to buy his way out of debt, the price of redemption might be too steep.

From bestselling author Eric Warren, Caspian’s Fortune is the first book in the Infinity’s End series. With a rich universe full of quirky characters and breathtaking adventure, it’s perfect for fans of JN Chaney and Michael Anderle. Scroll up and get your copy today!

This is a quick read with the usual tropes. A reprobate drunk captain with an irritating sidekick just trying to make a living. The back story was a bit contrived, but not bad enough to matter. The is a fair amount of bad science in the sci-fi here, but just like the back story, it doesn't really detract from the plot much, which keeps moving right along pretty much as expected with a Space Opera. We get some resolution at the end and a jump on the sequel, which I will probably pick up sometime in the future to see where it all goes from here (or might not ... I didn't exactly connect with the any of the main characters, so YMMV).

Caspian's Fortune is a fun space opera. It's a fast paced book and keeps the reader on their toes. I enjoyed the book.

I received a copy of this book to review from Netgalley. Thank you for the opportunity.
This book was a quirky and fun space opera with a cast of likable and unique characters. The reader is drawn in very quickly and the action is very fast paced. The dialogue is witty and the book is an easy read for those who are fans of Sci fi.
The science is not very in depth and the world building is lacking at times. Hard core Sci fi readers may not find it detailed enough.
On the whole, a good read.

"Caspian's Fortune" by Eric Warren is a great example of the space opera sub-genre. It contains all of the aspects I love in scifi: robots, aliens, crime bosses, smugglers, pretend mercenaries, space military, space stations, faster-than-light travel, spaceships, explosions, exploding spaceships, swords, blasters, plasma bolts, super powerful experimental weapons, tractor beams, grappling hooks, cliffhangers, etc. The book feels like a dark cross between the Star Trek and Star Wars where the main character is reminiscent of a gritty Han Solo with an irreverent companion robot straight out of Futurama. As this is the first of a nine-book series, there is more space opera goodness waiting for us!

I’m not big into epic sci-fi/fantasy sagas that are hard to follow—I like a good space premise with interesting characters and aliens on an exciting adventure—like a Star Trek episode. And this book fell right into my wheelhouse. The characters were quirky and fun, the adventures were exciting, the space scenarios and settings were captivating and not hard to imagine. I’m looking forward to diving into the rest of this series! All 8 books are free on Kindle Unlimited.

If space operas are your genre then this book is for you

Caspian Robeaux is barely making ends meet on the fringes of the known Galaxy - all he wants to do is find out who betrayed him and why - that is when he finds his way out of a bottle .
When he is offered a big payday for a job he looks only at the money on offer - perhaps he should have looked into who ( the Coalition ) was willing to pay so much to one such as he .
With the help of his only friend a robot named Box he must work his way through the ins and outs of the job - with the hope that he might finally clear his name - but at what cost - his life ?

This is a classic of the genre - fast paced action , quirky characters and witty dialogue - a book I enjoyed .

I was given an arc of the book by NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review

This is a book you need to get. Fun. Original in every sense of how it makes you engrossed into a new world. The influences from Star Trek are there. But you know what? So what? I've been reading too much hardcore sci-fi that this is a pleasant exchange. One, I love stories about ex-rogues getting their former positions back. Two, I felt that this story is a mixture of the best parts of Orville and Star Trek combined.

There's a lot of alien species in this world. It had the trope of humanity's behind and therefore they need to build some sorta secret weapon. I also wonder if humans only have the 'naval' aspect of warfare. Where's the Generals eh? Ruttledge was a good villain, but I felt like I really needed to see more of his cunning. He needed more scenes. Box is one of my favorite side-characters. The dude is literally me watching tv shows all day hehe :)

Honestly, I enjoyed this so much I just don't have enough words to write anymore. Just know you're going to be hurtled into space, and Cas really needs Evie as a girlfriend. There's a lot of good things. I didn't like Veena that much however, and felt I really needed to see more scenes of her manipulation. I was expecting her to play a much bigger role in this novel. Nevertheless, it's fun, its great, and you'll have a lot of fun reading it!

This was a rollicking science fiction tale. Quick pacing and a great storyline. True science fiction and fans of that genre will love it just like i did.

Short space adventure with somewhat annoying main character but totally entertaining robot sidekick, Box. I loved the sarcastic Box; he has the best lines. Caspian’s down on his luck and his epic drinking binges are a predictable trope (the robot makes them funny). It’s a light read - nothing to tax your brain or heart - but it’s diverting. It kept me engaged enough to download the second book in the series.

Eric Warren is the author of two dozen novels. Caspian’s Fortune was published in 2019, and is the first book in his Infinity’s End series. It is the 28th book I completed reading in 2023.

Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own! Due to scenes of violence and mature language, I categorize this novel as R. The primary character is Caspian Robeaux. Robeaux was once on track for a successful military career. He had been XO of the Sovereign Coalition of Aligned Systems starship Achlys. But then he was court-martialed as part of a government cover-up. Now he is barely able to sustain himself flying the odd mission for Veena.

Lt. Commander Evelyn Diazal of the Coalition approaches Robeaux. She has been ordered to take him back to Coalition Space. The Achlys has disappeared, and the Coalition wants Robeaux to help recover it.

Robeaux desperately wants to avoid returning to the Coalition. He is behind in repayments to Veena, and she will not easily let him off. He must decide which is the lesser evil.

I enjoyed the 6.5 hours I spent reading this 287-page science fiction novel. This was a good space opera novel. I like the chosen cover art. I give this novel a rating of 4 out of 5.
