Description

"...reminiscent of Eleanor Oliphant, and even The Flatshare"

"...so many twists and turns I couldn't help but guess (usually wrongly) where the story would go next."

"...it had me laughing one minute, sad the next, cringing and swooning"

Jess isn't having a great time lately. She has the most boring job in her company, her boss tries to place blame on her every chance he gets, and she's just had to sack one of her best friends. As for the men in her life, they all seem to be morons, cavemen or serial womanisers. Then she meets Steven. Mature, handsome and ever so enticing, Jess starts to think he might be the solution to a lot of her problems. The only issue is he's younger. MUCH younger.

"Jessicaca" is the debut novel from Susanna 'Suzy' Blackledge. A romantic comedy-drama all about love, friendship, office politics, work/life balance, drinking on a weekday, everyday sexism and furries; available exclusively on Amazon.

As funny as it is painfully familiar, the twists never end until the explosive climax, in what promises to be the book of 2020.

Don't expect a rom-com by numbers; this has been written to keep you guessing. When we say you won't guess the ending, we really mean it!

SYNOPSIS

Jess isn't having a great time lately. She has the most boring job in her company, her boss tries to place blame on her every chance he gets, and she's just had to sack one of her best friends. As for the men in her life, they all seem to be morons, cavemen or serial womanisers. Then she meets Steven. Mature, handsome and ever so enticing, Jess starts to think he might be the solution to a lot of her problems. The only issue is he's younger. MUCH younger.

"Jessicaca" is the debut novel from Susanna 'Suzy' Blackledge. A romantic comedy-drama all about love, friendship, office politics, work/life balance, drinking on a weekday, everyday sexism and furries.

As funny as it is painfully familiar, the twists never end until the explosive climax, in what promises to be the book of 2020.

Jessicaca is a book with a truly unique stance. Unlike any book, I have ever read before it has romance at its core but addresses some real-world issues that admittedly caught me off guard several times. It's billed as a romantic comedy, yet at times it is so much more. X-rated in some scenes yet often refined. Steamy and raunchy in others yet not overdone or exaggerated. Heartfelt and honest would be a good way to describe the prevailing theme and the whole book felt natural and not forced. At points, a raw tone is used to include some topics that some might call ’taboo’ and are sadly rarely talked about in the real world, let alone within the confines of a book. Gents, this is not a book for you unless you're comfortable reading about...well, "lady issues"...

Jessicaca is an intriguing read. Rarely faulting from a first-person stance, the book mainly follows Jessica and her friend and work colleague Soo Yung. Suzy Blackledge has created a strong clear voice for Jess (aged 31) and her desires. Before long she meets Steven. Drunkenly smitten by him, they quickly become involved, the only problem is he's younger. Much younger.

Much of the story is bitterly ordinary with the majority of the book being highly relatable to not just your but your mother's, sisters, cousins and best friends lives, which only helps to draw you in further. There are so many twists and turns I couldn't help but guess (usually wrongly) where the story would go next.

I can't help but repeat that this book is not just a romance. Yes, it details love but it also talks of friendship, office politics and that struggle of finding a work/life balance, the age-old question should you drink on a work night, everyday sexism which we are much too familiar with and so much more. I'm not entirely sure how Blackledge managed to fit so much within one book! It's an explosive debut novel which I'm sure many will enjoy. -  Rebbecca Ryan
