When Fred the Snake and Friends Go Camping by Peter B. Cotton is a wordless book that has the reader use their own imagination to narrate the story. I was pleased to see this type of book as many options are available for creativity.

The illustrations are colorful and they draw even the youngest reader in. You see the characters pack up for a camping trip. They have multiple animals and humans on their outing.

It is clear that they are having fun and a few mishaps make this an interesting book to guess what is happening. I bet by not including words the story can change everytime. Narrating your own story can be lots of fun when given such excellent pictures to guide you!

I was provided a free advance reader copy from Books Go Social in exchange for my honest review from Net Galley. The opinions shared in this review are my own.

This period of social distancing and all kinds of restrictions is quite difficult for all of us. This includes trying to keep children occupied, feeling safe, and attempting to keep up with preschool or schoolwork as best as possible. None of this is easy, but it helps to stay focused on what is possible to reinforce a sense of control and to reassure children that they are okay and that the situation will get better. Reading greatly helps to reduce children's anxiety and additionally allows you as a parent to spend constructive time with your little ones.
And if you are looking for the perfect picture book that will allow you to travel to another world at least for a short time, then you should choose ‘When Fred the Snake and Friends Go Camping’ by Peter B. Cotton. A book that will so effectively and vividly allow you to help your child explore the beauties of the outside world, to get acquainted with the concept of camping as well as the privilege of having friends. Interesting situations conveyed through effective rhyme will attract the attention of your little one. You can read or sing the story. And the talent of this author to simplify the language structures will help your child to easily follow and understand the story. The illustrations are absolutely sweet and additionally affect the interest of your child.
What particularly impressed me as a teacher and parent was the fact that the author chose so many different animals as part of the group of friends. In this way, children can see the importance of diversity. The differences as an integral part of society. The message that no matter how different we are, we can still be friends is so subtly conveyed through every situation, every rhyming verse, and every image.
An interesting and enticing picture book that hides great truths and pearls of wisdom, under seemingly simple verses. A great choice for any family with children, as well as for any kindergarten libraries. We loved it.
