Description

Dizzy Lizzie may be the smallest kitten in her litter, but her determination is mighty.

Born under an old house, in a dark wee den, with cobwebs in the corner and dirt underfoot, every day is a struggle for the tiny kitten, until she learns a trick or two to make sure she gets her share.

But just as things seem to improve, Dizzy Lizzie’s home is destroyed and she is torn from her mother. Soon, Lizzie is faced with a new set of problems, and if she wants to stick with her sister and secure a forever home, the little kitten must learn to curb her big temper.

“No matter how teeny-tiny I am, no matter how weebly-wobbly I am,” Dizzie Lizzie vows, “I’ll find a way!” But as she tumbles from one calamity to the next, can Lizzie tame her tantrums and find her forever home?

Based on a true story, this beautifully illustrated and uplifting picture book explores themes like loyalty, family love—whether that family is by blood or adoption—and never giving up.

Dizzy Lizzie is a beautifully written and illustrated book telling the story of the kitten Lizzie and even though she is the smallest kitten of the litter she has determination and never gives up.
I read this book to my 4 year old son and we both loved it.

To begin, the art for this book is extremely charming. I adore the style.

This is definitely a book I would read to my daughter and keep on the shelf, and maybe gift. The story is just long enough, with such a rhythm that it flows nicely. Kids can understand thr story easily.

I've honestly got nothing bad to say about this book!

As more and more kindergartens introduce new regulations or close and families across the world follow mandates and try to socially distance themselves to help stop the spread of the coronavirus, parents are scrambling for ideas on how to occupy their children – off the grid. So, if you want to keep the phones, tablets, computers, and gaming systems to a minimum, you can always choose a nice storybook to keep your kids engaged and occupied.
If you have a problem choosing a nice and interesting storybook, let me recommend Dizzy Lizzie by Kat E. Erikson. This picture book is complex and so simple at the same time. The author very skillfully tackles very serious topics such as the importance of family, the pain of separation, and perseverance as important traits of success. And all this is so masterfully reduced to a level where children can easily understand and think critically about all this. The story of the nine little kittens, and especially the part when they’re separated from their mother, is perfectly tailored to influence the emotional development of your little one, as well as to help develop children's empathy for pets. I think this issue is especially important, and every parent should try to develop it from an early age. If we strive to have our children to grow into emotionally and socially responsible people who will have respect and empathy for the animal world, we need more storybooks such as this. The picture book additionally offers children the opportunity to develop an awareness of the importance of humans in the life and well-being of pets.
The witty sentences masterfully convey a very important message. Regardless of the size and appearance, every effort eventually leads to success and if we want to succeed in something, we just have to be persistent and do not give up. This further allows parents to encourage discussion with their little ones and to try to link little Lizzie's persistence and stubbornness with everyday life events.
Dizzy Lizzie is a great choice for any family with preschoolers. The lyrical rhyme, the cute illustrations as well as the interesting story are guaranteed to keep the attention of your kids until the very end of the picture book. And be prepared to reread it once you finish the last lines, your kids will be shouting for more.

This was a really special book for a few different reasons. I loved that this was written in prose and really descriptive language. I thought it was a smart choice to have one full page of illustration and one full page of text, making it easy to connect the two, especially being this is primarily a children's book. From the same perspective, I thought the overarching themes of perseverance and never giving up were great lessons to pass on in a children's book. Overall, I have nothing bad to say about this and think it'll be a huge hit!

This is the adorable story of a kitten who is the youngest of her litter, the titular Dizzy Lizzie.

She is born inside an abandoned building, having eight older siblings, whom she loves, but they often don't leave enough milk for her, so when her turn comes, she remains hungry and throws hissy fits. She eventually realizes that she can eat after her older sister, Kimba, falls asleep.

One day, she and her siblings are discovered by some builders and are given away for adoption.
And of course, all of the kittens are sad and afraid and want their mom. But at least the lady at the shelter treats them good and Lizzie doesn't have to wait for her siblings to eat before she does.

As the days pass, Lizzie's siblings are adopted to loving houses, until she and Kimba are the only ones left in the shelter. One day, there comes a lady, wanting to adopt Kimba. Lizzie out of love for her sister and out of fear of being left all alone, thinks about throwing a hissy fit. But she doesn't. Instead, she tries to charm her way into the lady's heart.

The lady initially says that her house is too small and cannot afford a second kitten, despite Lizzie's pleas. But the little one follows her outside, still trying to get on her good side. The lady eventually adopts both of them and the story ends with Lizzie and Kimba moving into a nice and warm home and living their best life with their new mother.

Bonus heartwarming fact: Near the end of the book, there is a photo of the author hanging out with her two cats, Kimba and Lizzie. Because this story was based on true events and it's the story of how those two cats came into the author's life.

Plot-wise and even writing-wise, this book isn't really much. But I like what it tries to do.
One could say that a message that can be taken away from this, is how you can find solutions to your problems when you don't get angry and try to think.

But I think that the biggest message people should take away from this, should be: adopt.
Because animals deserve to have someone who loves them and a safe house to live in. And trust me, they will return your love every possible way you can imagine.

What can I say, I am a softie when it comes to animals!
And by the way, the illustrations were amazing!

Dizzy Lizzie is an adorable little kitten who is the runt of the litter. She is small and sickly. Circumstances soon separate her from her mother and then from her siblings. But Lizzie doesn't give up and soon finds a beautiful home.
As far as the story goes, it is a simple, cute, straightforward narration and goes exactly as expected. That's how early readers like it, right? A happy ending for everyone involved. Children will surely enjoy darling little Lizzie with her hissy fits and love for her siblings.
The story emphasizes the importance of animal adoption and that is a wonderful message to pass forward to little minds. What I found a pleasant surprise at the end was that this was based on the true story of the author and her cats. The pic melted my heart.
The illustrations are absolutely scrumptious!

A sweet story about kittens who are separated from their Mama and taken to a rescue where they are raised and adopted, featuring the resolve and bravery of the tiniest Kitten, Dizzy Lizzie. Dizzy Lizzie will inspire its readers to be brave, stand up for themselves, and try their hardest, no matter how small they are. Full of gorgeous art, and simple prose with a nice rhythm which will be great for reading aloud.

Dizzy Lizzie is born under a building with her eight siblings. She is the smallest of kittens. Due to that fact, she has to struggle to get get her milk from her mama. One day the building starts falling down around the kittens. The men stopped their work and put the kittens into a box to take them home. The kittens are crying for their mama. What will happen to the kittens? Are they safe? Will they continue to live together?

The author has written a story about family, friendship, love, loyalty and adoption. It has great illustrations that are perfect the story. It also shows the responsibility of taking care of your pets. The author writes it in a manner that had me feeling the kittens love for their mom.

I loved the story. It's about kittens who, due to an unfortunate incident, get separated from their mother and taken to a rescue shelter where they are raised, and eventually adopted. The story follows the bravery of the one particular tiny kitten, Dizzy Lizzie, who is brave and doesn't give up, no matter what.

The illustrations are colorful and beautiful. This will be a great read for kids. I will definitely recommend to read this book.

Dizzy Lizzie is an absolutely adorable and moving story. The main character is a feisty white kitten intent on not getting left out. She's willing to stand up for herself and make some noise, and her persistence gets her through.

This is a book likely to spark some initial questions that an adult should be ready to address, particularly about leaving their mother cat behind and being separated from their siblings as they are adopted.

With a mix of cute, sad, and happy parts, this is a well-balanced and positive story about finding your place in the world.

This one tugs at the heart! I’ve always had a soft spot for kitties and runts of the litter. Tiny Dizzie Lizzie is such a kitten, and has such a hard time contending with her eight sibs for mother’s milk. But she is persistent, and when she finally learns to suckle, BOOM! The old home under which the litter nests is destroyed by a wrecking ball. Fortunately, the kittens are saved but mama cat runs off. They’re taken to a safe place and bottle-fed by a kind woman. One by one each kitten is adopted. And miracles of miracles, Lizzie and her favorite sister Kimba are adopted together. Based on the adventures of the author’s own kitties, and a joy for children and adults alike!

Dizzy Lizzie by Kat E Erickson tells the story of an adorable young kitten who is learning how to survive in the world filled with change. When the story opens, Lizzie has trouble finding a spot to drink milk because she has so many brothers and sisters who are able beat her to a spot to eat. She discovers that if she waits until one of the others finishes eating, she will feel full and loved. Later Lizzie and her siblings are discovered by workmen and are rescued from the wild, but are taken away from their mother. This is heartbreaking for all the kittens who cry out for their mama, but they soon discover that they are now with a new person who feeds and cares for them. Later, Lizzie watches as all of her siblings get adopted into families. Lizzie is determined to also get adopted and figures out how her kittenish ways can help her be adopted along with one of her siblings. Lizzie finds herself in a new home and over time realizes that the person who adopted her treats her kindly and she soon thinks of her as mama.

This is a sweet story that children will enjoy reading. The illustrations are beautiful and all cat lovers will love the drawings of the adorable kittens. There are some concepts about change and perseverance that can be discussed while reading the story.

This was an adorable book! I loved the story on the kittens and how they didn't separate. This is really a cute, adorable book. I love the art of this book and how the two kittens did not get separated and were together even through the adoption. Dizzy Lizzie is an absolute must read with children.

I really enjoyed this book as a mum and my daughter loved it too.

I liked the focus and that the book builds on the elements of caring for, and loving animals too.

It was a great book to explain to any younger children too about kittens and young animals having to go off to their new homes - the illustrations are wonderful and add so much to the book too

I really enjoyed that this is based on a true story too – the author did a great job bringing the story of little Lizzie to life too – 5 stars from us for this one!

This is an adorably illustrated book about a mama cat and her babies. They get separated at a construction site, and each kitten gets adopted. This story was just long enough for a bedtime book. I think any child who loves cats will enjoy this gentle story about loving a pet, and saving a pets life from a shelter. Perfect for nursery school or kindergarten age children.

In 'Dizzy Lizzie' we follow the runt of the kitten litter, the smallest of the kittens and the one who had to fight for herself. I appreciate how this story highlights Dizzy Lizzie's determination and grit with the lesson of the story centring on the importance of resilience and perseverance.

Also, I love the art style and how this book is accompanied by gorgeous and vibrant illustrations. I love how the art depicts how adorable the kittens are!

I cannot wait to read this to my niece as I'm sure she'll love this. I recommend this read to those who love animals and in particular cats!

Dizzy Lizzy’ is a beautiful story about a litter of kittens and in particular one kitten called Lizzie.

This book is beautifully illustrated throughout, with pretty autumn and summer colours. I love the illustrations of the kittens, which make me think of JiJi in Studio Ghibli ‘ Kiki’s delivery service’, they have characterful faces and Lizzie in particular stands out.

I find that my daughter pays particular attention when there is repetition in the text and this story has plenty of this. ‘She bit and spit, she threw a hissy fit’ is repeated in the story. This works really well to evoke the character of Lizzie. She is a feisty and determined and works hard to find her forever home.
Based on a true story, this is a heartwarming tale which I’m sure plenty of young children with a love of animals would enjoy.

There is plenty of words in this picture book so I would say the age group would be for older toddlers and preschoolers.

Lizzie the cat has kittens in this charming story - but what’s going to happen to them all? Beautiful illustrations accompany this sweet little tale for younger children. A must-read!

I volunteered with a cat rescue for many years, so a book about rescue kittens was sure to steal my heart. This book is the imagined story of how the author's two cats came to live with her.

Dizzy Lizzie is the runt of the litter and struggles against her eight siblings to nurse on Mama. One day, a wrecking ball comes through the kitties' home, and the workers take the kittens away, leaving Mama behind. A kind lady bottle feeds the kittens until they are adopted one by one. This story paints a realistic picture of how many kittens come to find themselves in shelters and rescues.

The pictures are adorable, and though it is very sad when the kittens are taken from Mama, it is a happy story overall. I plan to return to volunteering one day once my daughter is older, and I look forward to sharing this book with her.

This is such a lovely book! My son is a cat brother himself so we loved reading this story about the teeny tiny Dizzy Lizzie who does cute things to get the things she wants.

The illustrations are beautiful and so is the kittens' journey.

If you are looking for a pet for your child, read this book to them first.

I decided to read this picture book as I'm a cat lover and when I was young I was nicknamed Dizzy Lizzie (My names Sharah Lizzie). Kat E. Erikson has written a lovely story about a kitten named Lizzie who is the runt of the litter. Lizzie and her siblings are discovered under an old house and adopted by caring people. With thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my Kindle version of this book.

How does the smallest in a litter of wild kittens get enough to eat? What does that kitten do when they are found and taken to a shop to be adopted? And how will that smallest kitten stay with its closest sibling? These are all questions Lizzy must be able to answer if she is to stay with her sister, Kimba.

An adorable story about a kitten finding its forever home and managing to stay with at least one of the siblings from its litter. It reminded me of when my mom found a litter of kittens in the woods behind our house, and me and my sisters each adopted one for ourselves. My mom took care of the mother cat, of course.

It was a nice read, about a kitten who is not giving up and always fights for what she wants - which is nice and cute. The story does have a bittersweet taste, but it could be great to open some important discussions with the little ones.

The art was quite static... and I couldn't really get into it.

This is an adorable story about how a small kitten overcomes many challenges. It also illustrates the importance of rescues and being kind to animals. Recommended to cat lovers young and old.

The grandkids and I always enjoy stories about animals and a rescue story is one of our favourites. When a litter of kittens is found in an abandoned building, they are taken to the animal shelter, looked after and prepared for adoption. Dizzy Lizzie is the runt of the litter and as each of her siblings gets adopted, she keeps hoping. It is just her and sister left and she wants to go with sister. She does everything she can to show the lady adopting her that they belong together. As we read this story, we were rooting for a forever home for Dizzy Lizzie and at least one of her siblings to stay together. We did not realize that it was based on a true story, but it is very believable as litters of kittens are often surrendered to animal rescue. This is a beautifully illustrated story with large and vibrant images to add to the story. Of course animal rescue is near and dear to our hearts as my son's family has a dog and cat, both rescued. What a great story to read to children and with families, especially when they are considering getting a pet. You can talk about how it would feel if siblings were separated, and how wonderful it is to have that lifelong friend. Also about rescuing animals instead of purchasing from a breeder and the importance of neutering and spaying pets. This is one I recommend for families, public libraries, schools and classrooms

*Please note that this review was delayed due to a period of health complications

What a sweet little book! "Dizzy Lizzie" is a great way to introduce children to the pet adoption process, because it gives you a good idea of what goes on before the animals arrive at the shelter in some cases, and that the whole purpose of adopting them out is for them to find new forever families. The writing was very cutesie, which worked for the most part, although I personally was a little put off by amount of times that the words "Mama's milk" was used the first time I read it - but that's just me having to get my brain used to switching between material aimed at adults vs children. The illustrations were so colourful and appealing, and I'll definitely be recommending this to my friends.

The single element that stopped this from being 5 stars for me is that I was a highly sensitive child, and the scene where Lizzie is separated from her mother may be upsetting for children who are also easily moved emotionally. Most of the time, mother cats will be reunited with kittens at shelters, so I was surprised to see that wasn't the case here. It actually made me sad for a bit! Maybe the majority of kids will be uneffected by that scene, but I know that if I was reading it as a child I probably would have ended up bawling and needing to talk with my parents, so I wanted to put that out there for parents with children who have high EQs.

In summary, a lovingly illustrated book with a happy ending. I would 100% recommend this in general, but especially if your family is considering adopting an animal.
