Description

'SINISTER AND WONDERFULLY ATMOSPHERIC' B A PARIS

'TO BE READ IN A SINGLE SITTING, WITH THE LIGHTS ON' JOHN CONNOLLY

It is only me, after all, who suspects me of murder...

Beth should have heeded her instinct. Instead, persuaded by her charismatic boyfriend, she finds herself house-sitting alone, in a 'ghost' estate on the edge of town. He told her it would be the key to their future. With the money they saved, they could buy their dream home. He'd be there whenever he could. Or so he said.

But Beth doesn't like being alone. She begins hearing strange noises at night, and wonders if the house could be haunted. As her drinking worsens, it becomes difficult to convince Jason that she's not imagining things. Could it all be in her head?

Slowly, however, Beth realises that there are very real dangers on the estate. And people who seemed friendly are keeping dark secrets, which they don't want her to uncover. And maybe Beth herself is capable of terrible things, if she is pushed far enough...

A thriller with plenty of twists and turns that is set in a remote, dark estate in Ireland which is a refreshing change from reading a novel set in the busy streets of London or New York. I chose this book based on the cover and without knowing what it was about. I know we shouldn't "judge a book by it's cover" but "The Estate's" cover definitely drew me in and I was curious to read this book.
I was very pleasantly surprised at how this story gripped me from the beginning and how I needed to keep reading to find out what was going to happen with Beth, the main character. I could imagine the cold, creepy, Irish estate in my head as I followed Beth's story and felt myself wanting to scream at her during certain parts of the book.
There are several creepy and mysterious characters in this book which keep your mind guessing and wondering what will happen next.
After finishing this book, I found I had a few questions that I would have loved answered. However, overall this book was an excellent read and I would definitely recommend it.
Liza has a fantastic style of writing and I look forward to reading her future books.

A young woman who appears to have a problem with alcohol falls for a total stranger while out drinking with friends one night. Already a pariah because of her drinking, she moves in with the man, who soon proves to be controlling, selfish and potentially violent. When he tells her of a chance to live rent free on an estate still in the process of being built. The house is gorgeous, if remote and there are few neighbors. She must live in the house alone for a few months while he finishes up some business, but he visits sporadically, growing ever more sullen and dangerous. While the main character is easy to dislike because of her problems with alcohol, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her as she falls under the spell of a true sociopath. A knuckle biting novel

A very twisty thrilled.

A very bleak and dark tone to it. Liza Costello writes the descent under a evi person's spell very well, nailbitingly good

The Estate is crazy good! Gripping, dark and left me on the edge of my seat.

I enjoyed the Irish setting, the dark creepy scenes make this story. Wasn’t a fan of Beth but this didn’t take away from the story.

A must read!

A dark and uncomfortable thriller, Set on an Irish Ghost estate, the unfinished nature of the estate and the economic background adds to the book's oppressive feel and the undercurrent of fear running throughout the various characters' stories. There is an added complexity of a flawed, unreliable narrator, swimming along the boundaries of alcoholism which makes the story and other characters engrossing for the reader. Highly readable, I finished this in an afternoon, the pacing kept me hooked.

I am a huge lover for a good thriller that keeps me guessing as I read along, this was one of those books. The atmosphere of the book was dark and eerie.

The character development throughout the book was great, it was a nice change reading about an estate in Ireland rather than your typical estate in the US or England or Scotland. I liked the change.

I feel the right from the beginning, it was a very creepy book which never gave any clues away, it kept me guessing right to the end. I kind of found myself not wanting it to end.

Thank you Liza and Netgalley for allowing me this ARC, I am truly thankful for the opportunity in exchange for an open and honest review.

If it sounds to good to be true…

We know that Beth Sheehan has a serious drinking problem. We know that it has cost her friends and relationships and that she is practically homeless. We know that when, on a night out barhopping, she meets the charismatic Jason, she thinks he will be her lifesaver. Not so fast, Beth.

Jason has a great idea. He and Beth can live together in a brand new house, rent free. The only catch is that she will have to stay there alone because of his job commitments. He’ll come out every weekend. Beth is excited, the house is gorgeous and she can work from home. They move in and Beth is alone in a neighborhood of half finished houses and empty lots. The few neighbors she has, Clara, Michael and the Dorans, seem to have problems of their own. Soon Jason staying in the city for weekends, Beth is drinking more to cope with her loneliness, and strange things are happening in the house. Are they really happening or has Beth’s imagination taken a dark turn?

Do not read The Estate at night or when you are alone! Part ghost story, part psychological thriller and all totally terrifying, The Estate raises doubts for Beth and the reader. Who can you trust? Who are your real friends? And, most important, what is really happening? Lock your doors! 5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, Hachette Books Ireland and Liza Costello for this ARC.

The Estate is a taut and compelling psychological thriller set in the aftermath of the Irish recession, where a change seemingly for the better turns into a nightmare of uncertainty. There's no place like home...and Beth hopes there never will be again. Beth never had a settled home as a child, but that's all behind her now. She's fine. Great. Settled in her single life. Until friends start peeling away, moving on to careers and family, leaving her feeling impatient and angry. When she bumps into Jason at a party, she spots the opportunity for her own fresh start - to turn her back on a reckless life of drinking and missed deadlines. She can build a new life, too...can't she? When she discovers that Jason has the opportunity to house-sit a new build out of town, she glimpses her chance. There's only one catch - Jason needs to stay in town for the sake of his new job. But Beth can keep their dreams alive on her own, can't she?

As her drinking worsens, and new friends turn out to be prospective enemies, her sense of reality begins to unravel. As Beth comes to confront the mysteries of her own past, she moves closer to understanding the desperate crime at the heart of the estate. But first, she must learn who is behind the strange attacks on her new home. And is Jason who she thought he was? Can she even trust him? This is a compulsive, dark and gritty thriller set on a rundown housing estate left to its own devices due to lack of money. There are twists and turns galore and overall there is a chilling atmosphere that underpins the story. Some of the character being enigmatic and creepy also adds to the thrill ride. It's full of suspense and is certainly bleak and eerie from the very beginning. It'll also keep you guessing as to whether our narrator is reliable, manipulative or simply a drunk spewing out their words. A psychological thriller that'll mess with your mind. Highly recommended.
