Description

MEET JOAN: SUMMER 2021

Download an exclusive early chapter sampler of Lisa Taddeo's novel Animal.

I drove myself out of New York City where a man shot himself in front of me. He was a gluttonous man and when his blood came out it looked like the blood of a pig.

That's a cruel thing to think, I know. He did it in a restaurant where I was having dinner with another man, another married man.

Do you see how this is going? But I wasn't always that way.

I am depraved. I hope you like me.

So excited to read the rest of this! Lisa Taddeo is fantastic, I loved Three Women and have been eagerly awaiting her next work. Hurry up NetGalley!

If the rest of Animal by Lisa Taddeo is as gripping as this small sample it will quite a read.
The book starts, literally, with a bang as Joan is having dinner with her married lover when her boss, also married and also her lover, enters the restaurant and shoots himself in front of her. After the police have gone, and while assuring the reader that she's not a sociopath, Joan calmly walks home and makes herself a Taco. Joan's interrupted dinner date convinces her that it's time to leave New York and head for California, where the rich and beautiful Alice lives . All we know about Alice from this teaser is that Joan has kept her name on a piece of paper for the previous 2 years and we leave her as she arrives at her less than salubrious new home ,complete with her parent's ashes.
The writing is sparse and punchy, there were parts that read just like Raymond Chandler, and I doubt there are many laughs along the way as Joan's tale progresses.
Joan describes herself as depraved and this book won't be for everyone,it's gritty and raw with a cynical slant on human nature.
I can only comment on what I've read but the first couple of chapters are certainly gripping.

The extract is from a novel aptly named ‘animal’. Each character was immediately defined by what they thought they could get from another. A very dog eat dog introduction.
When tragedy strikes the narrative isn’t punctuated by emotion but rather a cool assessment of what has been lost and how to regain it. This is a motivated woman. She knows exactly what she has been taking and the author expertly sets you up wanting to know why. What is the source of her rage, and who will she weaponise her sex against next?

This is a gripping and mysterious introduction to the novel that will leave you wanting more.

"I'll [tell the story] this way so that you may withhold your sympathy. Or maybe you won't have any sympathy at all. That's fine by me."

A thoroughly engrossing story, told in a vivid and unrepentant way. The author has harnessed their keen insight of the human mind to create three-dimensional characters that come alive off the page. It is a book that you just won't want to put down!

"If someone ask me to describe myself in a single word, DEPRAVED is the one I would use"...

I alrady found „Three women“ a highly recomme dable read, yet „Animal“ seems to quite different. What I liked waht the lively narrator, Taddeo seems to have found a unique voice for thenwomanntelling her story. Definitely a strong beginning whic made me curious about the rest of the novel.

This is such a taut, propulsive opening to a novel. After reading and adoring Three Women, I had high expectations for Taddeo's debut novel and this teaser is everything I thought it would be.

The narrator is playful and sharp but I feel like a quiet devastation is just underneath the surface. It seems like Taddeo has similar themes at play as in Three Women, but is also perhaps taking a leaf out of Lauren Groff's book and giving us a glimpse into female rage.

Please sir, I want some more!

Like many other reviews I literally can not wait to read the full book. I love Lisa Taddeo's writing, her novel Three Women was a breath of fresh air for me and I enjoyed every word. This book seems equally riveting and powerful...bring on June 24, 2021.

First of all, I would like to say a huge thanks to #netgalley, Lisa Taddeo and the publishers for the opportunity to read a two-chapter sampler of this upcoming novel in exchange for an honest review.

Next up, can we take a moment to appreciate what is probably one of the best openings of all times. The story hits the ground running and only gathers speed. The text is punchy and clipped, a bit like the information we are being fed by the narrator. It helps reveal more about the protagonist.

If this is how the book starts, herd-hitting, gutsy, full of life, I can't wait to see how it ends. I'm queuing up to see what Taddeo has cooked up. We're in for a treat.

If the first few chapters are anything to go by I'm going to love this! The writing is raw and evocative, leaving just enough for me to keep wanting more.

Having read ‘Three Women’ I knew Lisa Taddeo is an exceptional writer. This excerpt certainly had me hooked. Not too much is given away up-front. What type of person is Joan? There is enough here to make huge assumptions and I expect there will be complexities and revelations in which to draw out motivations and challenge the reader. This is definitely on the to be read list.

This extract starts with a bang, and I can’t wait to read the rest! There’s lots to grip you - the narrator’s lover has just shot himself in a restaurant and she talks about killing someone herself - but I was most intrigued by the unnamed “you” that the first person narrator is speaking to. I need to know more!

Thanks to Netgalley for an early preview of Lisa Taddeo’s new book - Animal.

This is Lisa’s first novel. I was disappointed to get to the end of this preview; I wanted to read more. The story starts out with the main protagonist recalling how a man she had been involved with, shot and killed himself. She doesn’t seem to be affected by this, or even like him very much... there’s reference to a backstory regarding the protagonist and “sociopathic tendencies” later in the book.

I can’t wait to read the book in full. This is a most anticipated read.

What an opener! Strange as it may be, I already love this girl and want to know what is going to happen to her. Who is Alice? Who is this John Ford? I need to know more!! Hoping the rest of this book is as good as the beginning!

I loved Lisa Taddeo's book Three Women so was very excited to see she has written a novel. The book started with a bang, quite literally, and was gripping from the get-go. I really like the writing style and I'm intrigued about what happens next and I have no idea where it's going to go. I feel like it's one of those books likely to give you lots to think about afterwards.

I really enjoyed this short extract from Animal, and it has made me even more excited to read the full book when it is released. It's been on my radar for a while so this was a great preview of what is to come.

I really enjoyed Lisa Taddeo's Three Women so much that I've already read it twice and I'm sure I will read it again and again over the years so I was excited to see that the published and Netgalley had an extract of Animal available for early reading!

I only read the short extract but I was pulled straight into the narrator's life, and I immediately wanted to know more. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the book.

Obsessed already! This dark and seductive character is the type to hook me straight away - I NEED to find out what Joan gets up to next! An excellent intro that gave just enough nuggets of info and spice to build the bones of what looks to be a very intriguing story.
