A colorful fairy world hidden below Paris. A girl determined to solve the mystery of lights. An ancient prophecy that could save the entire land. River of Lights transports young readers into the magical Land of Light and on a remarkable journey to rescue this fairy kingdom.
Katie doesn’t fit in with the other girls in her French boarding school. She misses her horse and her best friend back in Oregon. During a field trip in Paris, Katie falls into the river Seine. As she struggles to swim back to the surface, Katie is transported into the mysterious Land of Light.
All is not well in this ancient land. A wizard named Gaul has captured the queen and stolen the fairy light. With the help of Princess Lilly, her new firefly friends, and a hidden poem, Katie uncovers a secret that could change everything for her family and the Land of Light.
The Magic Portal Series takes young readers on an enchanting Narnia-like journey to foreign lands and fairy kingdoms. Filled with mystery and wonder, this new series opens up a magical world across Europe with glowing jewels, colorful fairies, talking flowers, and an evil wizard trying to steal the light.

River of Lights is a beautiful book full of wonder and whimsy. It reminds me a lot of The Smurfs, actually! I'd be happy to let my eleven year old read this or to read it my five year old at bedtime as both would thoroughly enjoy Rodenia and it's magical lands. The description is brilliant, I can picture every detail of every character and location in the book as clearly as if I were standing right there with Katie. I can't wait to read this to my kids and have them fall in love with it as I have. I'm very excited to read to second book in this series and see what becomes of Katie and her newfound friends.
This is a sweet fairytale read. I think children between 9-12 would especially love it. A story full of magic, fantasy, castles and a villainous wizard. Unlocking the magic spell to free the Queen. Katie is attending a boarding school in Paris, while her father is away on business. On an outing to the city, Katie finds herself falling into the River Seine. Her only hope to survive, is a portal, which takes her to an enchanted land. A magical, very short story, that keeps you interested to the end.
It's impossible not to feel bad for Katie as she tries to navigate a field trip with a broken ankle and a classic mean girl. However magical things are afoot. Absolutely loved this book. Honestly can't wait for book two. I'm definitely going to have to get a copy of this for each of my nieces as they'll no doubt adore it. It's got everything. Magic. Evil. Cats. It's the total package. Also It's so well written you just fall into the story and feel like you're in Paris.
What a wonderful book! It is absolutely perfect. It's a beautifully written fairy tale that will keep children entertained from the first page until the last.. I love this book and can't wait for the next one in this series to released. I received a complimentary copy from Ember Roth Books, Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Members' Titles via NetGalley and was not required to write a review. River of Lights by Melanie Dobson is the first book in the Magical Mortal series. Katie Andrews doesn’t fit in with the other girls at her French boarding school. During a field trip in Paris, Katie falls into the river Seine and discovers a colorful fairy world hidden below. In the mysterious Land of Light, all is not well. An evil wizard named Gaul has captured the queen and stolen the fairy light. With the help of her new friend, Princess Lilly, and the firefly fairies, Katie discovers there is an ancient prophecy that can help defeat Gaul and save the Land of Light. In the process, she discovers a secret that will change everything she knows about her family. With a Narnia-like journey, River of Lights is a great introduction to a new magical series. A book for young readers, particularly girls, filled with fairies, princesses and evil wizards. It is a sweet and fun adventure and as a fairly easy and fast read, I see younger readers really enjoying this series either reading independently or as a family. I look forward to introducing these books to my daughters. If you enjoy magical kingdom adventures, you will enjoy River of Lights. River of Lights is available in paperback and eBook.
