Description

"You’re not a ten-ladies-in-five-nights tourist, all points on the gender spectrum. I’ve met those guys. They have soot for souls.’ —Bill Blood

Middle-aged American suburbanite Marc McAmbit looks fine on paper. Married to Marci for seventeen years. Two kids. Good job, nice house. But a lost love inhabits his mind, tormenting his nights spent drinking bourbon in the backyard. He can’t shake her.

He wants a restart, and to fulfill a boyhood dream to explore the world by going alone to Siem Reap, Cambodia. In a land of ancient temples he discovers forbidden zones filled with lost-love lookalikes. He becomes infatuated with a young woman who reminds him of his ex-girlfriend, and asks her a favor.

Through encounters both uproarious and sublime, from back alleys to temple tops, Marc journeys inward. A cast of eclectic characters helps him rethink his past and possibly remake his future—if he can avoid crossing lines that can’t be uncrossed."

Due to various setbacks over the last year I have only just read this book.
I thought it was brilliant in all aspects. The descriptions of the scenery and characters made me look at a map of that area of Cambodia. The narrative was excellent right up to the fantastic ending.
