L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 37

A great collection of new science fiction stories. There are a good variety of stories sure to please any science fiction fan. The stories are well told, good character development, and a quick read.

I was thrilled to get a chance to review one of L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future anthologies. The first time I read one was probably 15-16 years ago and as a writer I love seeing new writers get a fresh start. There are three specific stories of various talent and style that I fell in love with. While I enjoyed the whole book and in fact gave it 5 stars, my favorite stories were each written in such unique ways.
The Tiger and The Waif was written by John M. Campbell about a toy AI kitten and its ability to save a little girl after a disaster.
Magic Out of a Hat by L. Ron Hubbard takes place after World War I. He wrote the story as a horror tale regarding a cursed Russian hat. The interesting thing is that the hat was based off of a wastebasket in his hotel room and had been part of a challenge to write from a unique prompt.
The third and final story that stuck with me was The Phoenixes' War by Jody Lynn Nye. I have adored Phoenixes' in fantasy literature for years and the beautiful pair in Jody's story are awesome. They stand between their country and other countries going to war and thanks to the priestess that has bonded with them, they always are ready to save the day. It would be lovely if we could do that in real life, maybe the world would be a better place.
I highly recommend this book. Lots of wonderful stories to fill your day or night. I look forward to seeing some of these authors writing full length novels.

I look forward to this anthology every year! This year might be the best yet -- the stories have something for every reader to love! It is impossible to choose a favorite, but among the ones that pulled my heartstrings the most were "The Tiger and the Waif" and "The Argentum." I hope to see many more stories by these fourteen new authors!

A solid collection of stories. A nice mix of science fiction, speculative fiction, and fantasy. Pretty high quality overall. Recommended.

This was a fabulous collection of short stories! The talent these writers have is incredible and I feel they will all have a great future ahead of them. Some ideas were intriguing, unique and fun. I haven’t read the previous volumes, but I will definitely seek them out and find some new authors. Thank you to Netgalley, the authors, editors and publisher for a chance to read and review this book.

I am glad I started off with issue 38 rather then this issue . I prefer the fantasy in issue 38.saying that I did enjoy the Tiger and the waif. It was a sweet story. I also enjoyed how to steal armor.
The Phoenixs war also deserves a 5 star rating.
Overall a pleasant read

This is the reason why I like short story collections, even If I don’t like some of the stories I will find some that I like ^__~ and in this book this wasn't the exception, you have several short stories, some sci-fi (my favourites), some fantasy (I don’t like as much) some that were kind of a mix of the two, what a wonderful world, where we can come together for the things we love, I really like that the stories were chosen because they where the ones that offered the most of positive emotions, even if the story was dark, you could find characters or situations that tried to get the best of the situation, yes I do agree that this was a great collection, and the illustrations? Well we could say that those are something that really make the deal, after reading the story if you go back and stare to the wining picture, you really understand why they won, well I don’t know other entries, but the ones that made to the book are worthwhile ;)

This was a fantastic book. It was great how varied these stories were. I just loved the story about the grandma who helped out some kids across a border. Also, the story after this about the testing facility. Them among others were definitely 5 star stories in my eyes. This book was extremely difficult to put down. So I just read it all in one evening using my text to speech function. That is why I didn't get the names of my favourite stories. I especially loved the section on L Ron Hubbard and his ease of writing novels and helping other writers. It definitely made for a very fascinating reading. I loved how this book is based on a competition where the winners get published in this book. It great how, along with their story, there is a bio about the author and illustrator. Including previous works, where they were published, and what awards they won. I really recommend this book if you like sci-fi short stories. What's best is that a lot of these authors are independently published, just like this book.

So much praise goes out to the authors and publishing team for creating such an interesting book that showcases just how diverse the sci-fi genre is. As there is certainly something for everyone in this book. I can't wait to read further volumes of this book.

Loved this book - there wasn't one story in there that I didn't at least find interesting. I keep trying to choose a standout and really can't, but my shortlist has to be 'the museum of Modern Warfare' by Kristine Kathryn Rusch and “On Magic Out of a Hat” by Orson Scott Card, which is an expansion on the 'Magic out of a Hat' essay by L. Ron Hubbard.
I really enjoyed the short stories and essays and would recommend it - and probably the series - to anyone.

Anthologies are an excellent way to discover new authors and genre. These writers flex their skills by building complete stories in the length of a novel's few chapters. When asked to recommend a writer or genre to try, I always recommend anthologies. You are bound to find something and someone to challenge your curiousity and enjoy.
