One for sorrow, two for joy
Edinburgh is gripped by the greatest terror it has ever known: a lone bomber is targeting victims across the city, and no one is safe.

Three for a girl, four for a boy
In their jobs, DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach deal with death every day. But when it becomes clear that every bomb is a trap designed to kill them too, the possibility of facing it themselves starts to feel all too real.

Five for silver, six for gold
With the body count rising daily and the bomber’s methods becoming ever more horrifying, Ava and Luc must race to find out who is behind the attacks – or pay the ultimate price…

Seven for a secret never to be told…

With twists and turns you’ll never see coming, prepare to be gripped by this devastatingly good thriller. Perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride and MJ Arlidge.

Wow, this book is amazing, and I highly recommend it! I loved it a lot, and since finishing it, I have bought more of the books in this series, and I have already started reading book 1. I didn't find that I had to have read any of the previous books to understand this 7th book in the series.

I really loved the main characters of this book - DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach. I loved the connection they have with each other, and the way they are so suited to each other, both in their personal and work lives.

The story is amazing, and it really kept me gripped, excited, hyped up, and wanting to find out what happened next. I loved both of the main stories, and the way they both came together at the end. The first story is that there is a bomber, who is bombing people in high authority roles. The second story is of a young girl, who has a stalker. Alongside this is the more personal goings on, of Ava, Luc and their flatmate. All of the stories combined make a well-rounded book, which is fast paced, thrilling, emotional and full of action. I must have cried about three or four times during the book. It really made me feel emotional. I also loved the Scottish setting of the book, especially since I am Scottish.

The narrator of the audiobook was outstanding, and the way he could change his voice, accents and emotions was just amazing. He sounded like a very professional actor, and he really brought the story to life and made it sound very exciting. I felt like I was listening to a movie, which felt very realistic. I really would like to see this book made into a tv show or a movie, and I think it would go far.

Overall, I think this book is superb - everything about it is amazing and perfect, and I can't fault it at all. I only have high praise for it, and I am now so excited to read the rest of this author's books.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Welcome back Luc, Ava and Natasha. How I've missed you. Eagerly awaiting the latest instalment in the DI Callanach series and Ms Fields does not disappoint. In fact, this is a crime spree so awful and deadly the reader barely gets the opportunity to take a breath. With more twists and turns than a Curly-Wurly, from the first sentence Ms Fields messes with the reader's head and doesn't stop until the final full stop. Her writing is so nuanced, dialogue so realistic and the interactions between the various characters is totally credible. I was devastated when I finished book 6 and promised myself when I got my hands on book 7, I'd limit my listening to an hour a day. Epic fail. I couldn't stop and listened to the entire story in 2 sessions. Robin Laing turns in an Oscar winning performance as the narrator. Now I have to sit patiently and wait for book 8. This series just gets better and better. Not enough stars in the world to rate it.

One of my absolute favourite series ever and this one does not let me down! From start to finish I was hooked. This was the audiobook and I really loved it. Ava and Luc are back and with a bang! No spoilers being given but the wait was so worth it!
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this audio arc in exchange for my honest review.

Wow. Wow. Wow.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book and omg it was absolutely breathtaking!
The story is heartbreaking and gripping flipping back and forth between the present, where a bomber is rampaging through Edinburgh and the past, where his reasons are slowly explained.
This was my first Helen Fields book in the DI Callanagh series, it was easily a stand alone book, but I’m now hooked and already dying to read the next one!
Huge Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for letting me listen to this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books and Helen Fields for an audio ARC of One for Sorrow in exchange for an honest review. I was lucky enough to receive both the digital ARC and audio ARC of this book and alternated between the two formats.

The story:

Where to start... The only reason I didn't read this book in one sitting was having to work! Right from the start I was intrigued and hooked, and the suspense was present all the way through. The story is explosive, thrilling and keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, with twists and turns a plenty. Easily a five star read that I would recommend to anyone who likes detective fiction.

The DI Callanach books are my favourite series, and being back in their world made me realise how much I had missed them. I loved the cameo from The Shadow Man, and my heart aches for certain characters I will not name to avoid spoilers. The only thing I would have changed would be to feature more Luc & Ava, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the next book? Which I now need asap!

If you haven't read the Perfect series yet, do yourself a favour and pick it up - you won't regret it!

The audio:

This was my first time listening to Robin Laing's narration for the DI Callanach books, and I think his narration and style was on point! I struggled to begin with as some of the voices he portrayed were not how I had pictured them (and Luc's accent hurt the French in me at the start), but after getting used to them it worked really well and I would definitely recommend his narration of One for Sorrow to any audiobook listener. He really brought the story to life, and I might listen to the audiobooks also narrated by him for my next reread of the whole series.

OMG
So so good!!
It started out a little slow but I like being reintroduced to the characters but wow it when it picked up it didn't stop and I thought I knew what was happening and had figured it all out but tricky tricky I was pleasently and heartbreakingly surprised by the twist, I very much enjoyed the past and present connected timelines and various point of views.
The narration was excellent but there were a few times where the narrator sounded slow or or out of breath or struggling for air I don't know if this was done intentionally as it was very noticeable with Felicity husband but it was also a few times it was done with Callaghan which seems not suited to the character so might have been an audio issues.
Either way this has been the best yet and I have listened to them all...very sad to have lost Graham but hope this isn't the end!
5 stars!!!!!!

I've listened to all the previous audiobooks in this series, Robin Laing is extraordinary and, for me, is a part of the series as the characters are :) I felt there wasn't "enough" Luc and Ava for me this time, or maybe I've just been waiting for this book (dose) for too long. Otherwise another gripping story from Helen Fields you won't be able to put down.
I'm now anxiously waiting for number 8... because there will be a number 8, right Helen?
Can't thank everyone enough for the opportunity to listen to this ARC.

One of the fastest paced books I’ve read! So much happened, so many twists and so much plot! Can’t wait for the next one. I’m not going to attempt to summarise any of it as I don’t want to give anything away. You don’t breed to have read any others in the series to be able to read this one.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.

If I could write a review only using emojis it would be a big line of crying faces! I've been waiting for the return of Ava, Luc and the team and it has definitely been worth the wait.
One for Sorrow is outstanding and Robin Laing narrates perfectly.
I felt every emotion listening to this audiobook and I didn't want to end. I finished listening two nights ago and it's still on my mind.
Helen's books are not your run of the mill police procedurals. They are dark, tense and graphic. They also feature one of the sweetest love stories ever (and I don't normally do love stories)
One for Sorrow is amazing. If you've followed this series from the start I can guarantee you'll be crying at many points throughout this one.

Firstly, the narrator has a wonderful voice until he takes on a woman. He can come over a bit Lady Bracknell. I will forgive him because the rest is perfect.
This book is one of the most heartbreaking I have ‘read’ in years. I won’t give away any spoilers but two stories run parallel throughout the book. Both devastating. So hard to write about them without giving anything away, but so many good people are lost along the way.
I will be definitely looking for more books by Helen Field

The narration worked really well on this book. The story itself was really interesting for a police procedural. I always enjoy a book written by Helen Fields, and I have been enjoying this series - but this was the first time I listened to it as an audio book. This just added an extra dimension and I am glad that I had the opportunity to do so.

I was given an advance copy by the publishers and netgalley but the review is entirely my own.
