Description

The life of Clyde Williams had certainly taken a detour these last months. Turning from aspiring comic book artist to low-ranted Level 1 necromancer. He saw things. Fought things. He killed, and even took a trip to the dead realm of Erebus.

And now he’s official, an agent of the paranormal intelligence department Hourglass, and posted to New York’s Madhouse facility with the ghost of his best friend and their seasoned team.

And they have their work cut out for them. Local Hourglass assets are being targeted by a lethal, horrifically-enhanced killer called The Hangman, the first weapon in a new campaign of terror being waged against Hourglass. But he won’t be the last. The Cairnwood Society is producing more of these monstrous madmen, and it’s up to Clyde and his team to find out their dark methods, and shut them down before Cairnwood can amass an army of nightmare killers to launch against Hourglass, and the world.

Book #2 of the Hourglass series

Book #2 of the Hourglass series

Advance Praise

"Robert E. Howard fans will recognize the tone instantly. The sheer zest of the storytelling here is infectious. James has mastered the knack of meshing the fast-paced lingo of paramilitary thrillers with the colorful worldbuilding of urban fantasy. It’s the same combination found in books like Larry Correia’s popular Monster Hunter series and the novels of Simon Green, and it works to extremely readable effect in these pages as Clyde, Kev, and their Hourglass allies continue to face off against Cairnwood and its minions. This is the kind of SF/fantasy where internet encryptions and Glock 19s show up right alongside hexes and undead monsters (sometimes merging, as in “low-grade demonic radiation” and the like). Fans of urban fantasy should jump on this series at its beginning. A fast-paced, richly imagined, gritty tale of modern-day good versus evil." --Kirkus Reviews

"A raucous and action-fueled sequel to Hourglass. Rose Hadfield's Intensive Scare Unit once again come to blows with the Cairnwood Society, which sets the stage for some epic action sequences in this octane-packed read. Everything about the Hourglass operations is fascinating, from the Hell simulators to the magic-machine hybrids; these wildly original arcana details make the story crackle with addictive energy for sci-fi and modern fantasy fans. Conspiratorial and spooky, James doesn't hold back on creativity or drama, for an innovative blend of paranormal, sci-fi, and fantasy fiction." Self-Publishing Review

For those who have read Hourglass, this book picks up pretty much straight away from that. It is a perfect continuation, seamless in fact.

For those who have not read the first one, I would say do so, as it is a great way to see the characters set up, along with the world. But. But you do not need too, as all the characters are reintroduced nicely, as well as the world and the "badies" in the book.

The world that the author is creating is wonderful, the characters are realistic, the story straight forward with some nice twists here and there.

If you are a fan of urban fantasy then this series is a must!

This is not a bad book by any means, but it was certainly different to what I was expecting. Took me a while to get into it and then quite enjoyed it. Recommended.

Excellent and highly entertaining urban fantasy.
It's the second in a series and I think it would be better to read the book in order. I didn't do it and struggled a bit at the beginning even if I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Excellent world building and character development. good storytelling.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Picking up straight after book 1, this was a fast paced and entertaining urban fantasy romp. Great characters and great world building.

This book has all the hallmarks of a modern fantasy Marvel type hero book. The main character, a comic book illustrator, has discovered he has as described in the book low level necromancer skills, and is supported throughout by kick-ass heroes with their own skills. He has found himself in an Agency that is fighting evil. The story is a search into how villains have been developing super-villain powers and battling to destroy them. The book drops you straight into a major battle between these two groups. I was excited to read the book from its description. But ultimately I was left disappointed. I haven’t read the first book and it took me until chapter four to have some real incite into what was going on, and throughout I never felt I really had a grip on the main character. Secondly, some of the filler between the battles for me dragged and didn’t add to the exciting action. So for me personally this one is a miss, but there are many differing views so why don’t pick up the book and make your own mind up. Thanks to NetGalley for sending me an ARC. The views expressed are all mine freely given.
