Description

Imagine if your life was spent at the mercy of coincidence…

A missing multi-million-pound painting, an insistent ex who won’t take no for an answer, and a ruthless media Baron who always gets his way. What could possibly go right?

Serial life avoider and semi-professional layabout, Jim Riven, is not particularly good at anything, unless lying in bed all day, ignoring his front door and his phone, and then going down the pub every evening, could be described as a life skill. But Jim Riven did have one particular talent—or what he referred to as ‘his curse’—that involved unnecessary and unwanted coincidences, or ‘not so serendipitous happenchances’ as he also liked to call them. Happenchances that had dogged his life ever since he could remember.

When Jim Riven’s ex-girlfriend, a rather spoilt society girl and daughter of all round international media rogue, Roo Osbourne, turns up unexpectedly one morning to elicit his help in finding a stolen painting by the grandfather of modern art, Piet Mondrian, Jim Riven’s life is turned upside down. And, for Jim Riven, upside down was not the right way up at all.

And so started a series of the most startling coincidences, placing him at the centre of a fascinating and complex mystery.

Have you ever experienced a coincidental event and just happen to brush it off? No big deal, right? What if these events happened all too frequently?

🍨 The Scoop 🍨
Jim Riven understands how it feels to experience coincidental events. His life seems to revolve around sleeping in, evening pub visits, being unemployed, and coincidental but unfortunately not serendipitous events. One morning Riven's spoiled trust fund ex-girlfriend Landa, daughter of a wealthy international media mogul, shows up demanding help. Landa lent out her father's Mondrian painting without his knowledge. Now a painting worth millions is missing. Riven's coincidental "curse" has helped Landa in the past and she will not take no for an answer.

💁‍♀️ My Thoughts 💁‍♀️
K.J Heritage has done it again! This is a fantastic box of mystery wrapped with a beautiful comical bow. I devoured this book in half the time it would typically take me to finish. Each personality of the characters is unique with eccentric demeanors that add to the comedy aspect and made it a breeze to read. I found myself laughing out loud and verbalizing profanities due to my surprise quite a few times. This book releases July 8th and I highly suggest reading it especially if you love British humor like myself.

I had a lot of fun in reading this romp that made me laugh and kept me reading. The author has the right level of dry humour and delivers a well written and laugh out funny story.
The pacing is right, the characters well developed, the plot solid.
Highly recommended.

As a lover of Mondrian artwork the cover initially drew me in, but it was K.J. Heritage’s sarcastic and comedically descriptive writing style that kept me hooked.

An apathetic Jim Riven who would rather sleep in, eat curry and drink Shiraz gets dragged into the mess of his richy-rich ex-girlfriend’s stolen painting. Given that Yolanda Osbourne borrowed it from her bad ass billionaire daddy without permission she wants Jim’s help to get it back before he finds out. Although Jim seems to have no actual skills, he is blessed/cursed with the talent of being in the right place at the right time. But is a string of coincidences enough to recover a missing Mondrian?

The author’s dry humour, aptly placed metaphors, and cast of eccentric characters made this a unique and enjoyable mystery. I found the chapters to be short and the storyline well paced to keep you hooked all the way through, with a good amount of red herrings that kept me guessing until the end.

Thank you NetGalley, BooksGoSocial, and Sygasm for access to an advance copy to review.
