Growing up, little Wilma was surrounded by her Cherokee heritage. Her parents taught her to be proud of who she was, and all that had come before her. But when the family moved from Oklahoma’s Rocky Mountains to the city of San Francisco, it was a big change, and Wilma fully realized how unfairly the world treated Native Americans.
As an adult, she became a leader in the fight for Native American rights, and rose to become the first woman ever to be elected as a Chief of a Cherokee Nation. This inspiring book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the pioneering Native American leader and activist.
Little People, BIG DREAMS is a best-selling series of books and educational games that explore the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists to scientists and activists. All of them achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream.

What an incredible inspirational figure. Wilma Mankiller came from the Cherokee tribe and lived on a farm in Oklahoma, but her people were encouraged to leave their land by the government to resettle in the city of San Francisco, reminiscent of the Trail Of Tears experienced when her Native American ancestors were forced from their land by the new settlers on American shores. I adore the Little People, Big Dreams series, as it brings such inspirational figures from many backgrounds into the forefront. Previously, my children and I knew very little about Wilma Mankiller, but her story about enduring racism in school, then going on to protest for better treatment for Native American people, and joining Cherokee Nation and rising to the position of Principal Chief, the tribes leader, is astonishing. What an amazing journey from small farm girl to Principal Chief, in a time when male leaders were the normal. This book is accessible for young readers as it has short paragraphs on each page and is accompanied by full page, colourful illustrations. Such beautiful books..theybare perfect for early readers to practise their reading, but also for slightly older readers like my 9year old, who adores adding to her collection and loves to read about heroic people without being weighed down by realms of information. These snapshots of amazing people are a wonderful introduction to biographies. A brilliant addition to the series, released 30th August 2022. #wilmamankiller #mariaisabelsanchezvegara #netgalley #littlepeoplebigdreams #cherokeetribe #principalchief #beautifulbooks #inspirationalpeople
