In the near future, Earth is visited by the Kir, an immortal friendly advanced civilization who, along with several others, have been the target of the Va'lo, a scarcity driven species that shares a similar history with humans. The Kir find themselves unprepared to combat the violence of the Va'lo and offer a fire-with-fire proposal: a blueprint of how the Va'lo society broke through their natural barriers, in exchange for a small group of human consultants who would travel into deep space to assist with developing strategies based on their own scarcity developed nature.

Finton Glass, a mid-level but promising engineer, is qualified to be one of the consultants. He's coupled with his Kiran partner, Ana, and the pair develop a fierce bond. When the transport carrying the human delegation is ambushed, Fin’s mission changes from consultation to survival.
