A joyful exploration of a young boy's day fishing alone by all-star author and artist Don Freeman. Brilliant colors capture the boy's emotions as he sets off in his red waders and fishing pole to capture a fish, hoping to see the pelican along the shore. The pelican, bright and brilliant, demonstrates how to fish and the movement is exquisitely captured on page. The use of alliteration and onomatopoeia provides a natural flow to the beautiful scenes, and it's delightful when the young boy discovers his surprise catch. An exuberant and exciting work for all young children.

What a wonderful book for children. (or really any age) The story is simple and sweet and the illustrations are adorable. I do not have children to buy this for, but I have friends with children or grandchildren and I will be recommending this as a great gift for a child or for them to read to the child.

I only wish the book were available for this Christmas.

This book is a reissued classic from Don Freeman, the author and illustrator best known for "Corduroy." I really enjoyed "Come Again, Pelican," with its charming seaside setting and entertaining story. The illustrations are gorgeous, the story has a wonderful sense of atmosphere, and the final twist is cute and funny.

Even though I had never read this book before, it felt familiar in the best way, with the art style and tone that I enjoyed from so many classic picture books during my childhood. I'm glad that this book is now available for a new generation of children, and would highly recommend it.

My youngest has always loved Corduroy, and I was excited to get my hands on this book. It did not disappoint! The illustrations are fantastic, and the story is great! It was a short and simple story about a child and his connection to nature. I often wonder what animals are thinking when we talk to them. This book involved a conversation with an old and wise pelican. The end of the book made me smile. I think this is a great book to add to a child's library.

A day of fishing turns into a grand adventure for a young boy. As he greets his old friend, the Pelican, he is determined to fish as well as the majestic bird. Instead, he finds himself in a bind as the tide begins to roll in.

What a cute read! I absolutely loved this one!

This is a sweet and funny story, sparing with words and big with illustrations. The small boy, wise pelican and big shoreline are the stars.
I enjoyed the read, which would be suitable for early readers or for parents to read with children. Kids will learn about the shore and tides, and will probably want to read it over again.

Don Freeman is no longer living, but his wonderful children’s picture books live on. This book is being rereleased as a restored edition. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this delightful story with elegant color illustrations.I hope today’s children will pick up Don Freeman books and keep his storybook magic alive.

What a cool book. I loved that the illustrations gave it the feel of an old vintage kids' book you might find at an antique store. The story was a simple one of friendship and learning, but very well told.

Come Again, Pelican by Don Freeman is another classic book by the much loved author of the book Corduroy. This book has been restored for re-release and I think a whole new generation will come to love the sweet character in this book and the friendship he develops with a pelican. This book is beautifully illustrated and perfect for young readers of many ages. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.

If anyone else has recently been stuck in the house for days by snow and ice, then they may also enjoy this refreshing glimpse of a simple seaside vacation. Ty (seen here on the cover) and his family bring their trailer to the same spot on the beach each summer. This year he is old enough to try and catch his first fish. He pulls on his new red wading boots and sets off as his parents set up their campsite. Ty greets his friend the pelican who is resting on the same post as when Ty saw him last summer.

The illustrations capture the warm colors of the sand and sun, the cool blue of the water, and the open expanse of the sky over the waves. Scenes show Toby sprinting along after a line of sandpipers with their "speedy legs" scissoring back and forth, or his pelican friend diving "beak first" into the waves to scoop up a fish. Readers will be as dismayed as Toby when they see his new boots carried off by the rising tide. A look underwater shows fish and crabs gathered curiously around one of the lost boots.

Originally published in 1961, this classic from the creator of <i>Corduroy</i> has been restored and will be released on May 7, 2024 - just in time for summer vacation. The elements of the story are timeless - kids, fishing, summer at the beach with family, camping out, and being warned not to lose a new article of clothing - and the story and illustrations have held up remarkably well. Corduroy was my favorite childhood book- and I now read it to my baby! I didn’t know Come Again, Pelican was even a book and it is so cute! We live in Florida on the west coast and it’s perfect to read for bedtime! Such amazing illustrations!

“ ‘I have a feeling I’m going to catch my first fish today,’ said Ty as he pulled on his new wading boots.”

Ty and his parents had just arrived at their usual camping spot, where, while Ty pulls on his bright red wading boots, the grown-ups contend with the trailer and awning.

He wondered if his pelican friend would still be there, and sure enough, he was waiting on the beach. They chatted to each other, as children and animals do, with Ty making conversation and the pelican looking pleased and squawking appreciatively now and then.

Ty saw sandpipers running up the beach to dig up little sand crabs, and he needed some bait, so he trotted off after them. But he wasn’t quick enough, so he sat down and thought maybe he could run faster without his boots on.

That evening at supper, when Ty’s parents asked him about his day, he was able to tell them what he had learned. (But he neglected to mention the lost boot or his first fish. Would they have believed him?)

“ ‘Oh, I learned all about the tide,’ Ty said, ‘how it comes and goes and then comes again— just like my pelican friend.’ ”

What a treat! This was written in 1961 and is being re-released in May 2024. I fully expect there to be some nervous parents and some eager little boys and girls, desperate to go the beach alone to go fishing. Wait till mother and father see this chap sitting atop a post out in the water!

Having originally been released in 1961, "Come Again, Pelican" through Plough Publishing, has a new lease on life for the newest generation. And generations to come I'm sure.

Come Again, Pelican, with it's lovely illustrations by Don Freeman, who also wrote the picture book, is sure to draw in the youngin's.

Following Ty, he and his family are back at their vacation home on the beach, and off Ty goes in his new red, wadding boots to go fishing.

Testing his boundaries, Ty ventures further than he's allowed, while the Pelican from the year before.

Without spoiling the whole story, it's only 44 pages, Come Again, Pelican is about young children exploring, and testing the boundaries of his world.

Beautiful illustrations and story. Wonderful to see more of Freeman’s works being published! Nature cared for and lesson learned— a simple yet memorable tale for all ages.

When I requested this, I didn't realize it was a restored classic. I did see that it was written by the author of Corduroy, which should have given me a hint, but I am not always the sharpest tool in the shed.

As Jeremiah and I both enjoy anthropomorphizing animals, assigning them thoughts, feelings, and motives, this book was especially good for us. A sweet little boy on vacation with his parents, so excited to FINALLY catch his first fish. He's focused, with barely a thought to his father's warning not to lose his brand new boots.

And also wondering if he'll see that same pelican from so many years before, who greets them each summer.

This really is so darn sweet, and beautifully illustrated. And the wonderful surprise at the end, which definitely made both of us smile. A winner all around, I'm so glad I got the chance to enjoy this for the first time.

From the author of Corduroy, and Plough Publishing, comes a newly restored classic about a boy's connection with nature and the special friend that he makes along the way. The words mirror the illustrations just as the illustrations mirror the words taking readers on a bright and colorful journey of a child's day at the beach. This is such a sweet and wholesome story for young readers, but also readers of any age, as a reminder of how whimsical a day at the beach can truly be. I never had the opportunity to read this book as a child, but it felt so familiar with the cadence of the words and a similar tone of the art to that of Corduroy given that the author wrote both.

Follow Ty as he has an adventurous afternoon whilst camping by the sea with his family.

This is a lovely story which I wasn’t familiar with before, I didn’t realise this was a reprint. It will definitely be added to my bookshelf and I’m sure it’ll become a firm family favourite.

The illustrations really add to the story and keep the reader engaged.

LOVE this author and I’m so glad this book is coming back into print. Rich literature for children has become sparse on bookshelves and this beautiful and well written book will be a classic added to shelves worldwide!

As a child, I really loved the story of Cordorory, so I knew I had to read this book. This book was very charming and like it's predecessor, it gave me all the feels. This is a must purchase childrens book. Parents, librarians, teachers, etc, go out and buy this book for the child in your life. You won't regret it!

Ty walks down to the beach wondering if his friend from last year will be there. The pelican and Ty greet each other. Ty takes off his red boots and leaves them on the sand. The pelican shows his fishing skills to Ty. As Ty is sitting on a pole, he sees his red boot floating away in the water. Then another boot floats by but this time, he catches it by snagging is with his fishing pole’s hook. When the tide goes down, he starts walking back when he runs into his pelican friend. When te pelican opens his mouth, he sees his other boot which he takes. He is asked by his parents how his day went. Ty replies I learned all about the tide.

This is a delightful story about a boy and his pelican friend. It is a newly restored classic picture book'.. the illustrations are well done and fit the story perfectly. The story is delightful and will be enjoyed by all. It show the child’s bond with nature.. This is a great book tiiat can be read aloud to children.

Lovely colours and illustrations this restored classic will be reminiscent and enjoyable for those reading with children however, it is showing its age a little.

Young Ty, returning to the Indiana Dunes for his summer vacation, hopes to once again spot his beloved pelican. Not only does he meet his pelican pal, the two have a wonderful adventure, which I won’t ruin with more details. The dreamy illustrations add to the magic of Freeman’s prose. As a child, that absolutely loved the book corduroy, and still owns her childhood book. When I saw this come available, I knew I had to request it.

Absolutely, adorable. Without a doubt and enjoyable. We truly loved it.

After having a bit of trouble downloading this title I finally got it to work and I am glad I did.
I could not remember if I had experience this book as a child or not until I read it this time. I had indeed so it had me reminisce about the days of old.

I think folks will go one of 2 ways.. they will either love it with its classic feel and beautiful illustrations that accompany a sweet story or it’ll feel woefully dated.

While I think there is some dating, it’s not insurmountable and kids can embrace the story , the characters and the illustrations in this remastered classic.

A whimsical sea-side adventure of a boy and a bird. Charming illustrations capture the adventurous spirit of childhood and harmony with the natural world -- the perfect summer gift for readers of all ages!

Once again, Ty's family is vacationing at the beach, and Ty is excited to learn to fish. He starts by watching the old pelican who is always waiting on the old pier, but Ty doesn't account for the tide, and soon he has more than just fish to catch.

This is a charming story with simple style and classic illustrations. The ending made me smile, and even though there's a lot of text at the beginning, which ensures it takes a while for the story to get started, it's well worth the wait.
