Description
In this gripping prequel to Third Moon Passing unfolds a tale of murders and missionaries, religion and race, love and war, and an unlikely friendship that transcends the realms of life and death.
Joseon Korea, 1866: the new prince-regent and his ruthless government have recently launched a crackdown on the spread of Catholicism, triggering panic across the peninsula amid rumors of French retaliation. As executions double in number, a young concubine, Hwangbo Pyori, is discovered dead in a ravine, having been killed on her wedding night. When Pyori's restless ghost returns to Haedong Village to find her murderer, she joins forces with the only person who can see her: Narae, a damo who doubles as an undercover Catholic obsessed with ending tensions between Korea and France. As they grapple with each new clue that raises more questions than answers, and struggle to navigate the increasingly murky intersections between faiths amidst bloody battles, the girls face a deadly question: your country, or your religion?
With its evocative prose and intricate plot, The Water Stricken is a mesmerizing tale that delves into the complexities of faith, identity, and sacrifice in a time of turmoil.

I recently had the pleasure of reading a truly exceptional literary work that has left an indelible mark on my mind. This masterpiece is a testament to the author's skillful storytelling, weaving a narrative that is both captivating and thought-provoking.
From the opening pages, I was drawn into a world that was both familiar and yet, utterly unique. The author's use of language is masterful, painting vivid pictures with words that transported me to a realm that was both fantastical and grounded in reality. The characters that inhabit this world are multidimensional and relatable, with complexities that make them feel like old friends.
One of the standout aspects of this book is its ability to tackle complex themes and ideas with nuance and sensitivity. The author tackles difficult subjects with a deft hand, never shying away from the tough questions, but instead, presenting them in a way that is both accessible and thought-provoking.
The pacing of the book is expertly managed, with a narrative that flows effortlessly from one chapter to the next. The author's use of plot twists and surprises kept me on the edge of my seat, eager to discover what would happen next.
What truly sets this book apart, however, is its ability to evoke emotions. I found myself laughing, crying, and cheering alongside the characters, invested in their journeys and outcomes. The author's writing is evocative, conjuring up feelings and sensations that linger long after the final page is turned.
In short, this book is a triumph. It is a must-read for anyone who loves literature, and a testament to the power of storytelling to transport, educate, and inspire. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a truly unforgettable reading experience.
this was a strong prequel in this world, it was a great introduction to this world. The characters were everything that I wanted and enjoyed the overall feel of this. Rina Olsen wrote this well and can't wait to read more, it was a great tale and wanted to read more.
This book is a fantastic example Korean historical fiction, based on the 1866 French Expedition to Joseon and the introduction of Christianity to Korea with a dose of Korean mythology.
Rina Olsen wove a story with a beautiful combination of history, myth, fantasy, and mystery. This story is of life, love, faith, war and murder. Her writing is fantastically rich and fluid, spinning a tale that I could not tear myself away from. The characters are complex and you find yourself invested in learning about how they came to be, and all is not what it seems. The plot has a mystery to be solved and the twists and turns were all at once shocking and satisfying.
I absolutely love the usage of accurate Korean names, descriptions, and characters of Korean gods and goddesses. The wealth of Korean mythology is vast and this gives a factually tantalizing taste. I equally love the historical snapshot of Joseon era Korea.
I cannot recommend this book enough for those that thrive on fantasy, mystery, and history. Easy five star read!
