Description

Good humour, like good cheese, gets riper with age, and this is very much the case with a new series of short stories from Leicestershire author Sam Nash. All Muck and Mullets will make you wet yourself laughing, well up with tears, shake your head in disbelief and even cringe at 80s style memories.

Beginning in May 1985, the book takes readers on a romp through a year in the company of a colourful collection of eccentric but endearing characters from the peculiar village of Adderstey. It is a light-hearted look at life in the 1980s in the heart of rural England, each month bringing a new event that unfolds at the expense of the residents.

Some chapters have darker storylines than others, but most have an element of humour cleverly interwoven into the plot and readers will quickly grow fond of the characters, many of them inspired by the author’s “less than normal” life. “I grew up thinking I was normal, but the more I tried to sound like just another average Joe by telling bizarre stories from the families that surrounded me, the more they laughed – until a little bit of wee escaped some of my more mature friends,” Samantha says. “Then one day I was coerced into writing it down, so that their friends could read it and wee themselves too!”

Prepare for village brawls, Women’s Institute ladies getting fruity on hash cakes, sponsored drinking events, tantrums among the amateur dramatics group, naked druidic rituals in the forest, campanologists indulging in a spot of ‘swinging’ in the bell tower, sporadic poaching and cattle rustling… this book will have you laughing out loud, so be careful where you choose to read it!

Such a funny book with even funnier characters. Well written too. If a book makes me chuckle from the first few pages, its a winner in my eyes. This hit the spot, big time
