Description
A golden thread joined them, a bond that went deeper than love – and it had nearly destroyed them.
Wren Embervale and Torj Elderbrock share a dark and bloody history. With Thezmarr on the brink of another war, and overwhelmed by the force of their feelings for one another, Torj discovers there is far more to their bond than mere passion. The legendary Warsword is determined to protect Wren at all costs, even if it means lying to her . . . Even if it means losing her forever.
Meanwhile, Wren is struggling to find her place in the world – both as an advanced student of alchemy at the ancient academy of Drevenor, and as one of the heirs to a lost kingdom. With the midrealms once again facing destruction, Wren must decide: Loyalty or liberation? Legacy or love?
As new political players emerge, Wren discovers that her gift for alchemy is more powerful than she ever imagined – and that it could tear the kingdoms apart.
Will she and Torj find their way back to each other, or will the ancient magic that binds them become their undoing?
Perfect for romantasy fans, Thorns & Fire, Helen Scheuerer’s spellbinding sequel to Iron & Embers, delivers heart-wrenching choices, a found family to root for and a love that defies the odds.

𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲:
Thorns & Fire is the second instalment in The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy by author Helen Scheuerer. Whilst this series is advertised for its ability to be read separately from The Legends of Thezmarr series, I personally recommend reading that series prior to this one for better emotional impact, overall enjoyment and understanding. This book kicks off almost immediately where things left off in Iron & Embers as our entire cast of characters are left reeling in the aftermath of the Battle of Drevenor. Bonds have been irrevocably severed and the emotional impact of the choices made at the end of book one are a consistent theme explored throughout the duration of the book. Thorns & Fire has yet again proven the magic that sparks upon Scheuerer's fingertips as I have found myself starting and finishing this book within a twenty-four hour period in my desperation to predict where the story is leading us towards. I was like a woman possessed as I found myself unable to put this utterly addictive and emotionally devastating tale down as I battled with my desire to savour it alongside my growing need for answers. This book wonderfully guides the reader further into the intimate depths of our main characters' vulnerabilities and fears as the stakes continue to get higher and more impactful with the consequences more severe than ever. The well-paced story masterfully balanced supporting the growth of our compelling cast of characters alongside the thrilling plot that continues to grow and build with every new chapter. I continue to feel in awe of the author's storytelling as I seem to already find myself eagerly and impatiently awaiting the conclusion to this spellbinding trilogy that has had me ensnared in its grip from the very beginning. I'm beyond grateful that the final book is due to release late-2025 and I look forward to seeing how the author decides to conclude this unmissable story. The Ashes of Thezmarr is not a Romantasy to be missed in 2025, so please take this as your sign to pick it up if you haven't already.
𝐏𝐥𝐨𝐭:
The plot within Thorns & Fire begins mere weeks after the Battle of Drevenor as we follow Torj Elderbrook in his mission to rescue the abducted Queen Reyna alongside his fellow Warsword, Wilder Hawthorne. War is once again brewing throughout the Midrealms with dissent and unrest threatening the precarious peace that many have tried desperately to nourish after the devastation left from the previous war. With the rise of a nefarious rebel group threatening to change the world as they know it with an unmasked man at the helm, the need for answers in a rush against time is more important than ever as magic itself becomes threatened. I really loved how much higher the stakes were raised throughout the duration of the book. The power of a Warsword was always seen as an unstoppable and unbeatable force with their Furies-given strength so it was interesting to watch them crumble under a threat they had never before faced. To see their morality challenged offered a changed perspective that opened up new discussions and deeper exploration surrounding the sense of vulnerability that helped me feel connected to the characters and the challenges that they face. I sometimes find with trilogies that a sequel can unfortunately suffer from 'middle book syndrome' as it struggles to live up to the expectations set at the end of book one, however I'm thrilled to say that this has not been the case in Thorns & Fire which has continued to evolve in strength alongside the author’s writing. Every single chapter, character development and plot progression has felt intentional in its impact to drive the story towards what I anticipate to be an epic conclusion to this unforgettable series. I savoured every new revelation that was dropped into our laps as some answers were unveiled whilst introducing even more questions waiting to be explored. Wren Embervale and Torj find themselves once again pushed to their limit in a world determined to test their love and loyalty for one another amidst foes that are determined to keep them apart. This is an emotional ride from start to finish, so I definitely recommend having your tissues on-hand for when you'll be in need of them.
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬:
Wren Embervale is such a wonderfully complex character that I have loved getting to see grow and evolve over the duration of the six current core books that exist within the Thezmarr universe. The way she has grown as she strives to channel her rage and heartbreak into something positive was such a wonderful transition to experience after seeing her struggle to lift herself back up from her lowest point in life during Iron & Embers. Her strive and determination towards discovering a cure was both as admirable as it was heart-breaking which left me experiencing rage over the unfair expectations forced upon her shoulders. Wren is expected to bear many burdens without complaint with little support and it made me feel so emotionally connected to her struggles. Her despair and fear over not being enough to save the innocents of the Midrealms really gutted me as I desperately yearned for her success above all else. Seeing how far Wren has come on her journey has been such a rewarding and fulfilling experience as we are able to see her willingness towards being more open with the human connection and companionship that she had once openly rejected out of the fear of potentially facing that loss that can come with experiencing love. Seeing Wren face the trauma of her past and use it as motivation to strive for a better future was the evolvement I craved and needed to see, and I honestly think that the author has done such a beautiful job at unravelling Wren's character just to build her back up brick-by-brick. Her loyalty and commitment to those she loves felt unmatched and it was a joy to witness her slowly discover her authoritative voice with their unwavering support and belief in what she has to offer. The way she commands a room and refuses to be undermined by peers and superiors alike had me audibly applauding, and I cannot wait to see what comes next for Wren's character in the final instalment in this trilogy. Wren is one of those characters that sticks with you for a very long time, and it has been nothing but a joy getting to follow her on this tumultuous yet impactful journey.
Torj Elderbrook you beautiful, unwaveringly strong-minded and sometimes frustrating man that I cannot help but love with my heart, soul and entire being. I can't lie... there was small moments when I yearned for the ability to reach into my kindle and shake the stubbornness out of this man. Yet, at the same time I fully understand the struggles and motivations centred around his character so ultimately his decisions did make a lot of sense in context. I really feel for Torj as his notable reputation as the legendary 'Bear Slayer' Warsword has created this narrative that follows him within his everyday life for good and for bad. Torj is this incredibly strong and dependable man who feels a lot whilst being afraid of being an emotional burden on others. His yearning for friendship and companionship to form his own version of a family was devastating as Torj is the man who gives his everything to the people in life whilst refusing to expect anything back in return. His selfless nature and innate goodness are a huge part of his identity, making it impossible to not want to root for his character as he's basically the human embodiment of a golden retriever. The lack of answers surrounding his missing grandmother really tugged on my heartstrings to the point that I desperately need Scheuerer to have mercy on my battered heart by resolving this plot-line on a positive note. Poor Torj has suffered and sacrificed more than enough on behalf of others, so now it's finally his turn to be happy. He's nothing but deserving of having that love and loyalty returned to him tenfold and I loved getting to see him realise that he's not just an extension of Wren. Seeing him to realise that the people within his life also care for him apart of Wren nearly had me sobbing as it was apparent that Torj never expected to be liked for who he is as his own independent person. Torj is such a strong character and devoted love interest who remains one of my all-time favourite book boyfriends, and I cannot wait to see him fight for the love and life that he knows he deserves in the final book in The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy.
𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭:
I fear author Helen Scheuerer saw us all comment on the yearning within book one and said 'lol hold my pen' because I beg your finest pardon? The angst? The yearning? The PAIN? Took me out. Deceased. RIP Erin... because my goodness was I overwhelmed by the rollercoaster of emotions that I experienced throughout the relationship development between Wren and Torj from beginning to end. There's no denying the electric connection between both characters and I had a great time getting to see them unravel over time as they fought as hard as they could to deny that connection. The yearning written between Wren and Torj was absolute perfection as it left me on the edge of my seat feeling ever variety of emotion possible. The frustration, sadness and sense of loss was palpable between both characters as I desperately wished for the ability to make them work it all out by smashing them together like I did with Barbies growing up (we all did it don’t lie). The beginning of Thorns & Fire really did hurt, but I also had the best time getting to experience the progression that was masterfully written through to the end as I'm weak for a slow-burn dynamic filled with angst and hard work. The witty interactions and banter that exists between both characters never fails to make me laugh as they strive to get the last word in during their interactions out of sheer stubbornness. The way Wren and Torj regard one another as equals despite their differences in station was wonderful to see as it helped their love story feel all the more authentic and honest. There's no denying that both characters love fiercely without restriction and it was beautiful to experience the truth finally being laid out into the open after the time-period of suffering that we watch them endure. The way Wren and Torj slowly learned how to better communicate as a couple felt hard-earned and wholly authentic after the many struggles that we have witnessed them face. The intimate insights into their fears and vulnerabilities created a wonderful opening into humanising both characters and making them all the more relatable to the reader. Seeing them learn how to grow and evolve as a couple was a fundamentally important development within their relationship and I cannot wait to witness Wren and Torj continue to grow in love and strength as a couple in their bid for a happy ending in the final book of the series. That ending though? I’m billing Helen for my therapy sessions.
𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:
In conclusion, Thorns & Fire was a strong addition to The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy which saw the author masterfully weaving the intricate nature between our two main characters alongside a compelling plot that continues to grow in strength with every release. That ending was an emotional whirlwind that left my jaw practically on the floor in shock and devastation. I would happily read more book series' centred around this world and its compelling cast of side characters that have been wonderfully introduced, so I cannot wait to see if the author decides that there is more stories waiting to be told within the Thezmarr universe. Author Helen Scheuerer has long solidified herself as an auto-buy author of mine, so it's no surprise to say that I already have book three on preorder as I eagerly await what I anticipate to be a thrilling conclusion to Wren and Torj's story in a currently unnamed book three, predicated to release sometime November/December 2025.

When you get sent in invitation to read an early copy of one of your favourite authors new book, you drop everything. This was a masterclass in yearning, heartbreak, and high-stakes fantasy.
Helen Scheuerer has done it again—Thorns and Fire is an emotional gut punch wrapped in exquisite worldbuilding, powerful character arcs, and the most delicious slow-burn yearning. Wren and Torj’s push-and-pull had me clutching the pages, and the way Helen writes relationships—messy, aching, and real—continues to be unmatched. The plot moves with purpose, setting up an epic finale while giving space for characters like Thea to shine (thank the Furies we’re getting more Thea content!). And Delmira’s return? A literal phoenix moment—I cannot wait to see how that thread explodes in book three.
This sequel never feels like a placeholder; it builds. The tension is tangible, the politics are layered, and the emotional payoff is earned. Watching Wren stand her ground, face betrayal, and still fight for her world—and for herself—was a highlight. I am feral for this series and would happily read Helen’s grocery list if it were written in the same tone. But this? This was art. Bring on the finale—I am so ready.
Thank you PanMacmillan and Netgalley for the ARC copy!

I have always said that Wren is without a doubt my favourite character in this series, and so I can’t tell you how excited I was to receive a copy of this book in my inbox!!! I was on ‘Do not disturb’ for the rest of the day.
I honestly cannot get enough of this series! Thorns & Fire had me HOOKED! I couldn’t put it down and I finished it in a day!
I absolutely adore Wren and Torj! Wrens heartbreak and her process in dealing with her emotions isn’t at all rushed, which I loved. She is angry and trying to make sense of what Torj did and where it leaves them. The tension in this book was off the charts! 🥵
As well as being introduced to some new and rather interesting characters (or villains) we also get reunited with Thea, Wilder, Cal and my favourite side character and life of any party, Kipp! This man and his mischievous ways will always make me laugh.
I don’t want to say too much to try and avoid giving away spoilers, but the ending had me shocked! I need answers Helen! Loved this book and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one!
Thank you soooo much @panmacmillan @helenscheuerer & @netgalley for pre approving me for this

Wow wow wow..
I cannot believe I have finished this masterpiece already and have to wait for the next one.
The spice was really turned up and I loved seeing Torj and Wren overcome so much together.
Emotionally this was powerful, I sobbed so many times because the depth of the writing and feelings Wren had to confront were so moving and heart wrenching.
Right at the end I was ready for more trauma but so many pieces came together in a very clever way, I’m now fired up for the finale and can’t wait to see how the gang tackle their latest hurdle.
Also, not a spoiler but when you get to the words IRON AND EMBERS.. oh my gosh.. brilliant!

When I received the invitation to read an advanced copy of this book, I was absolutely over the moon. Having read The Oremere Chronicles by the same author years ago and then The Legends of Thezmarr last year, it is clear this author has gone from strength to strength, honing her craft and creating addictive masterpieces of fantasy.
After binge-reading Iron & Embers earlier this year, the first in the Ashes of Thezmarr series, set five years after the original Legends books, I knew what I was in for with this sequel; an intricately woven but flawed world, a little bit of heartache and pining, and a whole lot of world-defying love as has become indicative of this author's work.
I felt the initial premise for Thorns & Fire was a little tenuous, with the bonds at play between Torj and Wren all but ensuring their forced separation and mutual heartbreak would not last. That being said, Scheuerer could publish her grocery list at this point, and I'd probably rate it five stars. Even with the knowledge that these two would ultimately find their way back to one another, I was gripped to every agonizing page they were apart, tormented by every secret they kept and gleefully celebrating every time they touched or they engaged in their top notch verbal repartee. Wren challenged Torj at every turn and refused to let him off the hook for anything, a character trait I can only relate to.
This may have been the middle book of a trilogy, but it was by no means a filler; establishing both the unbreakable connection between Torj and Wren but also between them and their allies, all of whom they're going to need to call upon in the final book if the ending of this story is any indication. I was so glad the author went easy on us in that final chapter, however, because my heart couldn't take any more and it was refreshing to see Torj stand by his words, have faith in their love and stand by Wren's side, demonstrating how open communication can win the day. I can't wait until the final instalment!

Fist of all, thank you so much to PanMacmillan and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book, because I'm FERAL for Helen's books, and having the chance to read the new instalment of the Thezmarr adventures she writes is the highlight of my year.
And OH BOY, it did NOT disappoint!
Picking up right after the shocking ending of Iron&Embers, our Thea navigates her role at Drevenor Academy, where's she's trying to replicate an alchemic process that could save the realm. Torj is... Torj and he's a man OBSESSED.
I cannot write an in depth review without spoiling stuff to you guys but YOU. ARE. NOT. READY.
This book is everything, the longing, the obsession, the tension, the politics... Things are changing swiftly, new villains and powers are coming into play, and I absolutely loved it!
I can say I've bookmarked and highlighted large part of this book :D
It's so good. SO. GOOD.
I love how the characters of the Legends of Thezmarr come and go seamlessly from this spin-off, and I can't wait where the next book takes us, because things are getting JUICY.
I'm so excited for everyone to read this book, and can't wait for the next!

I cannot get over this book and I do not think I will when I received the email inviting me to read this I threw out my reading plans because I knew I was going to pick this up.
This was a wild ride and the emotions I felt with this, my heart was tore apart, I cried, it was healed only to be ripped apart and then patched together again. I was looking at people calling this low fantasy this is not low fantasy the world has the whole making of an epic fantasy, and my heart rate and moments I do not want to tell you what it was.
Wren and Torj are electric and not just because of the magic, I felt their need, their heartbreak and everything.
I now have to wait for the last book in the series because I need to know how this wraps on if I am good can I have it now.
I shall await for all of the people to fall in love with this series like I have and wait for the last to have more of Wren and Torj although I am going to be very upset when it is over. I need them like I need air. I feel I have been soul bonded to the two of them and I never want it to break. This series has engrained into my soul and I cannot wait to yap about it with all the romantasy loving people.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
"He would do it all again to keep her safe. He would do it a hundred times over if it meant Wren still walked the midrealms, even if he couldn't walk beside her."
I loved diving back into this world, and this book starts off pretty much from where Iron and Embers finished.
In this book we have:
⚔️ Forced Proximity
🧪 Fated love
⚔️ Bodyguard/ Touch her and die
🧪 Academy
⚔️ Secrets and betrayal
Wren is heartbroken and angry as her and Torj try and navigate their new positions in each others lives. As a new threat spreads around the realm, Wren once again finds herself alone with the warsword who broke her heart, much to her annoyance.
The yearning, the angst, the sexual tension this book delivers on all fronts!
There's traitors and schemes, and all the things you'd expect as new political players emerge. Whilst trying to work together against this new threat, Wren makes startling discoveries about her homeland and her magic. With all this going on, can the Alchemist and the Warsword find their way back to each other, or will they remain at odds.
I devoured this book in one day and can not wait to find out where they go from here after the twist at the end!
This story had all the exciting stuff you come to expect from Helen's books. It's a must-read for any Romantasy lovers. I would definitely suggest the Legends of Thezmarr series first, although this is following different main characters it also contains those we know and love from the previous series.
Thank you to Pan Macmillan for the arc of this book for my honest review ❤️

“I’m his to protect…and he’s mine.”
Following Torj’s ultimate sacrifice, breaking their soul bond to save Wren’s life, it appears that the two are destined to remain apart. However, as dark storm clouds gather and Thezmarr stands on the brink of war once more, their fates are once again intertwined. Delmira has awoken, and an Embervale Queen must rise to take her rightful place on the throne to protect the midrealms. Meanwhile, Wren and Torj find themselves at the centre of a prophecy that foretells the fate of their world and will test their power, love, and loyalty to the limit. They must swiftly decide whether the ancient magic that binds them will ultimately be their salvation or their downfall…
This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2025, thank you so much Pan MacMillan for the ARC! The second book in the Ashes of Thezmarr series was everything I hoped for. Thorns and Fire is a captivating romantasy with a slow-burn which will keep you hooked until the end!
Like Iron and Embers, book two alternates between Torj and Wren’s POV with short chapters and fast pacing. The plot picks up a few weeks after Iron and Embers, as Torj / Wilder and Wren/ Thea are quickly thrown into new respective quests. There’s lots of tension and angst in the first half as the main characters try to figure out their love lives whilst seeking a way to turn the tide of the impending war! It’s a brilliant adventure with lots of twists and turns in the plot. By the end we are left with as many questions as answers on a nail-biting cliffhanger!
I absolutely love Scheuerer’s world-building; the scale and immersive experience of her books are I think among the best in Romantasy! The Ashes of Thezmarr series offers so much - there are epic adventures, thrilling quests, formidable villains, and hilarious banter. The cast of characters is brilliant, with well-developed arcs that keep you engaged. You’ll find familiar faces from the Legends of Thezmarr series (I’m still in love with Kipp after six books - I’m here until the very end holding out for his HEA!), and there are also new faces and political power plays too.
While I still recommend reading The Legends of Thezmarr first to fully appreciate the characters and their world, Thorns and Fires definitely has enough memories and reflections to make it make sense as a great standalone series too.
I was so excited to read this. I loved it and can’t wait for the final instalment to this epic trilogy. But at the same time I also never want it to end!

Helen remains the undisputed queen of Romantasy! This next chapter was everything I could have hoped for and so much more! The Legends of Thezmarr remains the best Romantasy series I’ve ever read and this continuation of it in the Ashes of Thezmarr is phenomenal. Thorns and Fire is filled with all the angst, banter, unexpected twists Helen is known for. It is so perfectly written balancing, plot, action, spice and a magic beyond compare. A galaxy of stars! ✨

I couldn’t put this down! Thorns & Fire is everything I hoped for after Iron & Embers—and more. The romance gets hotter, the twists are wild, and the characters just keep growing on me. Helen Scheuerer knows exactly how to pull you into her world and keep you hooked. If you love fantasy with strong women, steamy moments, and lots of emotion, you’ll love this. I’m already counting down to the next one!
*thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

A huge huge thank you to Pan McMillan for this arc, I’ve been anxiously awaiting this after THAT Iron & Embers ending!! Thorns & Fire picks up straight after and oh my, the yearning in this is visceral, I mean..I felt it in my bones…Torj!🥺 I loved this, the tension, the wanting…I may have stayed up far too late after being about to put it down and then getting to only one tent - HELEN!! Fully to blame for my zombie like state the next morning! I honestly could not stop reading this and though I wanted to savour it I ended up flying through it. I just need all the Wren & Torj! and Wilder & Thea…and Cal & Kipp, I adore them all. Helen has created such an incredible world in Thezmarr and everything she writes is just pure brilliance! I cannot wait to see what is in store next for Wren & Torj…and the Midrealms

Of course I had to read Thorns & Fire - the sequel to Iron & Embers pretty much as soon as I got the invitation and I have no regrets…except for how long I now need to wait for the conclusion to The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy!
Following the end of Iron & Embers, I was in exactly the same position- how could I not be? Wren and Torj have been through so much and this second book in the trilogy just built upon that, layering on the physical, political and sexual tension that left me on the brink in book 1!
This is no filler, second book syndrome disappointment! Thorns and Fire builds upon the world-building, magic system development and social, and emotional relationships to bring even more growth, development and challenges for these much loved characters!
There’s no questioning the spice and power of their relationship, with some truly inferno like scenes but, this book builds on their relationship within and without - there is more development for supporting characters, including Kipp, Dessa, Cal and Xavier’s personal arc that will blow you away!
I absolutely love Wren as a character too! She is independent, strong, feisty, and determined but, she has grown into recognising when to ask for help and to recognise her own skills and abilities, particularly as the situation around her heightens and the stakes increase exponentially!
Another truly explosive chapter of The Ashes of Thezmarr that totally blew my socks off and had me up far too late to read just one more chapter!
Thanks to Pan MacMillan, Tor Bramble and
NetGalley for the invitation to review this book in exchange for my honest and sincere review.

Thorns & Fire plunges us right back into the captivating, richly imagined world of Thezmarr, picking up in the wake of Torj’s heart-wrenching decision to sever his Soul Bond with Wren. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear there’s far more to the bond than either of them could have expected. Determined to protect Wren at all costs, Torj must wrestle with his lingering feelings—can he keep her safe without acknowledging the depth of their connection?
Meanwhile, Wren is on her own journey, trying to navigate her place in a world that constantly demands more from her. As a gifted alchemy student at Drevenor and one of the lost heirs to a broken kingdom, Wren faces impossible choices as the Midrealms stand on the brink of destruction once again. Her growth throughout this book is incredible—she’s no longer the isolated poisoner from book one. She’s becoming a true leader.
Helen Scheuerer’s writing continues to blow me away. She does not miss. After Iron & Embers became my first five-star read of the year, I was nervous about the sequel living up to it—but Thorns & Fire delivers in every way. With each new instalment, we get deeper into the Thezmarr lore, uncovering a world that is as beautiful as it is brutal. The expansion of the mythology and political tension is masterful.
One of my favourite aspects of this book is the villain: a mysterious figure cloaked in darkness and alchemy, who twists Wren’s own creations into weapons. The way he manipulates the victims of the first war is chilling—and yet, completely understandable. Wren’s empathy toward them adds so much complexity to her character. She knows change is necessary, and her final choice in the book (yes, the one involving her sister) had me tearing up, even though I saw it coming.
And then there’s Torj and Wren. These two just work. Helen writes their dynamic with so much care—balancing secrets, sacrifice, and longing—without falling into the dreaded miscommunication trope. Their romance feels earned and never drags. The emotional tension, the subtle spice, the cliffhanger ending... chef’s kiss. I already can’t wait for book three to see how Wren’s bold plan unfolds.
We also get more time with beloved side characters—Kip and Cal especially continue to shine. And that Bloodteller name drop? I nearly screamed. If we don’t get more of that in the next book (or even a spin-off), I will riot. Honestly, I’d read a whole book about his kidnapping escapades alone—it would be both tragic and hilarious.
I’m still in awe that Helen is releasing all three books of this trilogy in a single year. It feels like we’ve barely had to wait, and yet each instalment is packed with so much depth and development.
If you loved the Legends of Thezmarr series or are a fan of dark fantasy with heart, Thorns & Fire is an absolute must-read. I’m officially obsessed with Helen Scheuerer’s world-building, romance, and characters—and I need to dive into her entire backlist ASAP.

@Helen Scheuerer 📚 Author has absolutely done it again. 5 stars each and every time. I can honestly say Helen can do no wrong in my eyes. This is the second instalment in the ashes of thezmarr series. Although Helen stated this can be read as a standalone series, in my opinion it is best to be read after the legends of the Thezmarr which is 5 years prior to Wren & Torj story.
The book followed on beautifully from the heart shattering cliff hanger at the end of Iron and Embers. I honestly didn’t think it could get any better but it really does. This book was everything. You have
- reluctant bodyguard,
- hate to love,
- forced proximity,
- academic setting and the best part for me is the
-found family aspect. The plot and character development in this series has been amazing. It’s just everything. I just want to stay in this world forever. The ending of this book.. was jaw dropping and although I could tell a little of what was coming it still shocked me to my core. Helen has and always will be an autobuy author for me. Although this book is an arc for me I will always go out to purchase a beautiful hard copy of this world. I adore it so much.

ALL THE STARS!!! The second book in the Ashes of Thezmarr series was everything I hoped for and more! I was so escited to be approved for this title!
Thorns and Fire is a captivating romantasy with a slow-burn which kept me hooked and at no point did my children eat a home cooked meal that exceeded prep time of over 10 min for the two days I was walking around the house with my kindle as an extension of my hand!
I love Scheuerer’s world-building; her books are ABSOLUTE TOP-TIER and most definitely amongst the best of the genre, and she is on my auto-buy author list. Adventure, political intrigue, amazing banter, character development, supporting side characters and Wren and Torj just… *chef’s kiss*
I would still recommend reading The Legends of Thezmarr first to fully appreciate the characters and their world, you would be doing yourself SUCH a disservice by jumping into Ashes first. I read A LOT of romantasy, and you don’t come across this level of writing often so do it right, you will not regret it, I promise! Holding my breath for book no3! If you haven't explored the world of Thezmarr yet, I envy you, you're in for a ride!
Thank you to Pan MacMillan and NetGalley for this review copy, all opinions are my own.

Thorns & Fire is everything I wanted and MORE. It’s smart, sizzling, and utterly spellbinding!
When an email lands in your inbox titled “Your exclusive invitation to read the sequel to Iron & Embers! ❤️🔥”, you know there’s only one thing to do - drop everything and dive in. And wow, Thorns & Fire was everything I hoped for and more.
After that explosive ending in Iron & Embers, I was desperate to see what came next for Wren and Torj, and Helen Scheuerer does not disappoint. This sequel is sharp, immersive, and brimming with tension. The academic x alchemy vibe continues to set this world apart - it’s handled with such care and reverence that it feels completely fresh and grounded in its own rich magic system.
What really stood out in this instalment was Wren’s growth. Watching her come into her powers and slowly realise she might be the key to everything was so satisfying. No spoilers, but her arc is one of empowerment, clarity, and rising stakes and it had me hooked from start to finish.
Though the romance still sizzles, I loved that the first half leaned more into character development and plot. Getting to know more of Kipp, Cal, and the gang added depth and heart, making the action-packed second half all the more impactful.
And can we talk about Thea and Wilder? While not in too many scenes, their dynamic has me seriously tempted to start the Legends of Thezmarr series while I impatiently wait for the final book. That ending… absolutely brutal in the best way.
A triumphant sequel that raises the stakes, deepens the lore, and leaves you breathless for more.

Torj broke the bond, but Wren is determined to figure out what is going on and why. Between Wren putting the fragments of her relationship with Torj together, another war is coming. Delmira's grounds are alive again and that means a Queen must take her throne. Wren must decide: loyalty or liberation? Legacy or love?
Firstly, thank you to the moon and back Pan Macmillan for inviting me to read this ARC. That email made my day and I simply can't be more grateful. Helen is keeping us absolutely fed this year and Thorns & Fire is an incredible addition to The Ashes of Thezmarr series.
This is as fast paced as Iron & Embers, equally pushing the plot forward and unravelling the relationship between Wren and Torj, while introducing new political players and having our other favourites there as well.
With a rebel group rising behind an unknown leader with a mission to change the world, there is a clock ticking as every day he gains more and more followers. I fear with each book Helen writes she just makes the stakes higher and higher. We watch as magic wielders and warswords are taken down, one by one. This actually made me so nervous since warswords are supposed to be untouchable. HELEN I HOPE YOU ARE READING THIS. I WILL CRY IF ANYONE DIES IN THE NEXT BOOK OKAY.
The character development and the depth that is explored literally makes me think I personally know Wren. Which is a problem because she is not having a good time right now. I am so wildly (get it?) excited for the final instalment of this series. The last 15% of this book had my on the edge of my seat, and that cliff hanger?! BUT Helen is blessing us with the third book this year (thank the Furies).
Again, thank you Pan Macmillan for providing me this arc! Helen is an auto-buy author of mine and will continue to read everything she writes

5 Stars – Even More Addictive Than Book One!
Thorns & Fire is everything I hoped the sequel to Iron & Embers would be—and more. Helen Scheuerer raises the stakes in every way, delivering a spellbinding blend of romance, magic, danger, and emotional intensity that had me completely hooked from page one.
Wren’s journey continues to be one of strength, vulnerability, and fierce determination. I loved watching her wrestle with her identity, legacy, and feelings for Torj. And speaking of Torj—his presence in this book is magnetic. The tension between him and Wren? Absolutely delicious. Their bond is complicated, fiery, and full of longing, and it made every chapter sizzle.
The world of Thezmarr becomes even richer in this installment. From the political tensions to the secrets lurking beneath the surface of Drevenor, there’s a real sense of impending war and personal reckoning that had my heart in my throat. The writing is lush and immersive, with just the right amount of spice and slow-burn intensity.
This book has everything: forbidden magic, ancient bloodlines, found family, and a romance that had me screaming at the page (in the best way). Scheuerer has once again proven she’s a powerhouse in romantasy, and I’m already desperate for the final book.
Highly recommend to fans of character-driven fantasy with plenty of heart, heat, and high stakes.

Thorns & Fire by Helen Scheuerer is such a good story. I rated this book 5 stars because I couldn't give it more stars. I couldn't put it down for a second.

The way we are thrown straight back into Torj and Wren's heartbreaking story 😰
Thorns & Fire is such a beautiful and emotional continuation of Iron & Embers in the world of Thezmarr. We see individual growth within the characters and also with Torj and Wrens bond dynamic. I just love them both so much. I'm continually blown away with how Helen is able to write characters with such dept over and over again. ☺️
I cannot wait to continue with this series! If you loved the Iron & Embers, even The Legends of Thezmarr series, you will love these! 🥰
Huge thank you to Pan Macmillan for providing and ARC for Thorns & Fire (Release Date: 31 JULY 2025)

I am living the development of Torj and Embers relationship almost more than Wilder and Thea’s. The added political intrigue and alchemic mysteries to solve make it an engaging read. The spice is all consuming and so believable for these two that it fit seamlessly into the story. Great read, can’t wait for the next instalment!

Thank you to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for providing me with this e-arc in return for an honest review.
5⭐️ 3🌶
This book was everything and more, if there's one thing Helen Scheuerer knows how to do above everything else it is to write characters who YEARN
The pace of these books are so well written, it doesn't feel like you've just read a 500 page book by the end. Every small moment feels like something bigger and you're right there along with the characters for the ride.
I don't want to give anything away about the plot but this has set the next book up for a tonne of action. I hope Helen writes more books in this world because I can not say goodbye ⚡️

Thank you to the author and publishers for allowing me an ARC via NetGalley!
I think it’s safe to say that this sequel absolutely lived up to everyone’s expectations. I love the way that Helen writes the dynamics of the relationship between Torj and Wren; the emotions felt so incredibly genuine and it really draws on the readers own emotions. You can’t help but feel every feeling the characters feel: guilt, rejection, anger, disappointment, and even the strength of the love they have for each other.
The pacing of the book was excellent, as no part felt rushed or prolonged, which made it really easy to digest and finish. It was a good balance of plot, and relationship building/world building. Helen is incredible at describing the intricacies of a ‘forbidden’ relationship, and the dual POV just really emphasised the connection Wren and Torj have despite everything working against them.
There’s a great amount of plot progression from Iron & Embers, and it doesn’t feel ‘too much too soon’. I appreciate the fact that this series can be read apart from her previous series, however I think this has inspired me to go back and read those books for deeper context and understanding.
As an author, I feel as though Helen does an excellent job at portraying human emotions, and we see the humanity in all of the characters as their feelings are multi-dimensional and it really personified each person for me.
Writing a multiple books in a year is no easy feat, but Helen has handled it with ease and there has been no change in the quality of her writing, as both books released this year are easily deserving or 5 stars. I will sell my soul for part 3 and will be eagerly awaiting it!
Rating: 5/5 stars (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

If there’s one trope that trumps all other known tropes, it’s yearning. I’m talking the kind of yearning that moves mountains and changes lives; the kind of yearning that changes people, perspectives, priorities; the kind of yearning that makes a beast of a man, and a viper of a woman ache for one another, until that ache is all that they know. Iron & Embers was a sensational read, and I am beyond grateful to get the chance to return to Thezzmar, Torj and Wren so soon. I am putty in the hands of this author, she’s delivering angst, yearning, desire (a tent! “I got you!”, “fuck it!!” tending to his wounds!, “you’re mine and I’m yours”) romance, lust, trauma, and gut wrenching heartache and I am beyond addicted. A perfect sequel to a perfect book. I’m going to die waiting for the next one.

Thank you to NetGalley, Pan Macmillan and Helen for allowing me to read and review this ARC!
5⭐️
Well, Helen! You have done it again, you are the QUEEN of fantasy romance and this book is perfection!!! I absolutely LIVE for Helen’s writing style and honestly, this series is MILES better than legends of Thezmarr for me. I never want it to end.
Thorns & Fire is the sequel to Iron & Embers, following our MCs Wren and Torj 5 years after the events of the Shadow War, Wren is on her way to becoming a Master Alchemist whilst Torj is tasked with being her bodyguard and protector! The tension, the banter, the spicy. CHEF F*#KING KISS!!!!!! Alongside is a gripping story that keeps you invested and ALREADY I’m pulling my hair out with impatience for the next book!

I will read anything this lady writes!
Top read of 2025 so far!
This was even better than the first book in the trilogy. I do recommend reading the original legends of thezmarr before diving into this spin off. You don’t have to but I feel to get a feel for the emotions of these characters you should.

I ADORED THIS BOOK!!! I am extremely lucky and thankful to have received an arc of this book for an honest review!
Thorns and Fire is everything I wanted/needed the sequel to Iron & Embers to be!! the story progression, the character development of both Wren and Torj was wonderful, the world building continues to engage me and I cannot wait for the next book (already!!). I love the magic system, the world, politics, lore and where I see the book going in the rest of the series. I cannot recommend this book more and I loved it so much! Helen Scheuerer’s writing is addictive and I cannot wait for more!!

Thorns and fire
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
OMG! I'm definitely obssesed with this spin off. The first book was amazing and this second one, also understood the assignment. THE ANGST, THE YEARNING!!!!!! So well done and exactly what I need it after the ending of Iron and embers!
Thorns and fire is almost entirely focus on the characters and the development of their romance, as for the fantasy aspects and the political intrigue, they are still present but not as much as they were on book 1. You can tell that the author is taking her time positioning all the pieces of the puzzle before the grand finale on book 3.
The action is scarce but the romance, the friendships, the found family were perfection! I ate it all up! The thing that amazes me the most is how the vibes between the two series have their own voices and even tho both share the majority of the same characters it doesn't feel reperitive. Wren and Thea have very distintive personalities and I love how their series respectively represent them and their personal takes on life and love and everything.
Also, the dual POV again? Yes! Keep it coming!!! I very much enjoyed seeing Torj grovel, and as for Torj, wow, THIS MAN!!! Wren is a force of nature and Torj (whom I see as The witcher, Henry Cavill's version btw) matches her energy perfectly.
And, once again, an awful cliffhanger for an ending. Like, why Helen, why? It wasn't as bad like the one in Iron and embers, in terms of emotional damage, BUT, el salseo (like we say in Spanish), the drama of it all, 10/10, no notes. And I need book 3 now, please and thank you.

Thank you so, so much to Pan Macmillan and NetGalley for the ARC of this highly anticipated (by everyone, but especially me!) romantasy gem in exchange for an honest review.
This book was everything I hoped it would be—and more. The tension, the groveling, the jealousy, the slow-burn longing, the growth these characters go through—it’s a romantasy masterpiece. Helen Scheuerer delivers again, and honestly, if you haven’t picked up Iron and Embers yet, bump it to the top of your TBR and then have this one ready for July. You won’t regret it.
This sequel picks up right where the first left off, diving straight back into the complicated, emotionally charged relationship between Wren and Torj (yes, he’s still absolutely a top-tier book boyfriend). They’re still reeling from the fallout of book one, and no—things don’t magically get fixed right away. But that only makes the angst, the yearning, and the little moments of connection all the more satisfying.
And the tropes? Chef’s kiss:
- Forced Proximity
- Fated Love
- Bodyguard / “Touch her and die” vibes
- Magic Academy
- Secrets, betrayal, and political tension
The world expands beautifully with new settings, side plots, and character arcs, but at its heart, this is about two people trying to find their way back to each other. And yes, I highlighted nearly the entire book—my Kindle is glowing. (My physical copies remain ink-free for now, but that might change.)
Also, if I had to pick a favorite scene? The belt scene. I melted. Utterly wholesome and emotionally loaded in the best way.
I always try to include some constructive criticism in my reviews, but honestly? I struggled to find a single thing that didn’t work for me. Maybe the ending—but only because it left me screaming for book 3 in true cliffhanger fashion. Not because it wasn’t well done (it was), just because now I’m desperate to know what happens next. 🥺
Final note: if Wren and Torj don’t have a cat by the end of this series, we will be having words @helenscheuerer.
I could easily ramble on for pages about how much I love this series, but really—you should experience it for yourself. I’ll just be over here rereading books one and two while counting down to the finale.

This book? It wrecked me in the best way.
With every chapter, the stakes climbed higher, the emotions dug deeper, and the twists? Brutal, in all the right ways. The characters had me fully invested, their connection tense, complicated, and laced with moments that made my heart ache. Wren and Torj are perfect, the spice in this book was amazing!
It’s the kind of story where everything slowly unravels before snapping into place right at the end and that ending? I’m still recovering.
Dark, magical, emotional… and yes, I already need the next one.

5 stars!!! (But even that doesn’t feel like enough)
Thank you so so much panmacmillan and netgalley for providing me with an arc of this highly anticipated (in general but also for me) book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was amazing, I loved it so much! The tension, the love, the grovelling, the jealousy, the growth the characters go trough, this is truly an absolute romantasy masterpiece that helenscheuerer created. If you haven’t read the previous book in this triology (Iron and embers), then please do that next and add this book on your TBR for July, I promise you you will not regret it.
This book was full of amazing scenes with tropes we love, but also with a lot of amazing new settings and side stories. There were a lot of scenes I loved (I cannot think of any I didn’t actually), but if I have to pick one it’s this one: The belt scene, I melted oh man, it was just so wholesome.
I only just started reading ebooks and therefore highlighting them (my physical copies are (so far) not to be touched by inked), but I could have highlighted this whole master piece (and mostly did!).
The book is mostly focussed on the relationship (or what was left of it) between Tjor (the bookboyfriend he is!) and Wren. And while the first book ended with them seperating (and no they don’t immediately restore their relationship), there was so much magical romantic moments and scences between them, and they are just so perfect together. Their relationship has been quite physical in book 1 but helenscheuerer is a master in creating couples with physical attraction but also with a deeper romantic connection (something I know doesn’t happen in every romantasy book, so I feel that a lot of readers that complain about that should absolutely read this book). I do have however one note: If they don’t have a cat by the end of the series, we are going to have words @helenscheuerer!
I usually try to also include some constructive feedback in my reviews, as that makes them more real and there usually is always something you don’t like about a book, and I tried, I really did but I couldn’t find one aspect about this book that granted a negative point for me. Okay the ending maybe, but that’s not because it was bad (okay it was/is bad, but in the way of how it ended and how it’s going to be resolved (can I have book 3 now please?🥺😍😭🥰), not in how it was written).
I can rattle on for 4 pages (or more 😅🥺😏😂) on how much I love this book (and it’s predecessor), but really you should go read it yourself. I will be happily enjoying book 1 and 2 and cannot wait for book 3 to come at the end of the year.
Again so many thanks panmacmillan for taking pity on me and grating me an arc of this amazing book.

Thank you so much to Pam MacMillan for this ARC, truly so grateful to have received an early copy of my most anticipated release (following iron and embers earlier this year lol).
Helen Scheuerer quickly became one of my most loved romantasy authors and once again, she has absolutely blown me away with this book!
The characters, the plot and everything in between is amazing. From start to finish I have been hooked on every word, the wait for the third book is going to be brutal. The world of alchemy which Helen has created is so unique and such a refreshing aspect of fantasy, from the villain to the protagonist and the world surrounding them both.
Seeing the growth of Wren’s character, not only from book one but starting from the Legends of Thezmarr series, has made my love for her grow tenfold. While she may not be a warrior Wren is still a strong, resilient character who will do anything it takes for those she loves. And my man Torj is WEAKKKK with yearning and I absolutely loved every second of it, ugh I love him so much!!
Another easy five star read from me, this series is everything I want in a romantasy.

Man oh man do I love Wren and Torj and my god do I love a couple who yearns for each other so put the two together and you have one of my favourite romantasy couples.
Wren is one of the most complex FMCs I've read in a while, I love how incredibly smart she is. She doesn't need a man to come in and save the day. she'll do that herself and save everyone else whilst she's at it thank you very much. However, I do adore that she's (very) slowly letting Torj in so that she doesn't have to bear the burden of everything that's happened to her alone.
My little nitpicks with Thorns and Fire are that the first half felt very samey to Iron and Embers, things picked up about 50% of the way through but it did feel a little filler heavy at the start. Secondly, the pacing felt a bit off. Wren was supposedly in school but unlike the first book, the timeline of the school year just didn't quite flow for me.
All that being said, the ending!!!!! Helen Scheuerer thank goodness you write fast because I am DYING to know what happens in the final book of the series!
Huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC, this was a book I've been excited about for a long time.

This is one of my most favourite romantasys I've read so far. It has everything I want. Fantastic romance, good spice, 'touch her and die'.
It's written so well! I loved it!

This is the sequel book to Iron and Embers (sequel series to the AMAZING Legends of Thezmarr)
My first 5 star read of May! I was a little disappointed in Iron and Embers so my hopes weren’t huge for this book. But wow! I loved this sequel so much. The characters had much more development, I loved getting more scenes with secondary characters.
It was a perfect balance of magic, tension, academy setting and political intrigue.
I had ALL the emotions reading this, the plot, the characters, the spice 🥵perfection!
I need book 3 now!

“𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒃𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒚𝒐𝒖, 𝑾𝒓𝒆𝒏. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒓 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒉 𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉 𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓, 𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅 𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒂𝒛𝒆.”
Well I just finished this in six hours and now I’m angry with myself because what do you mean I have to wait until WHO knows when for the next book? What do you mean this is the consequences of my own actions?
This was the perfect follow up to Iron & Embers, just as thoroughly captivating and magnificent.

With fast-pacing and an action-packed plot, it’s difficult not to be utterly enthralled with this immersive world of high-stakes, wicked banter and as per usual, raw emotion. I love Wren and Torj endlessly and I miss them so much already.
Thank you so much to the author, publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an advance copy of this book.

Chefs kiss as always!! Helen can do no wrong and I loved being back in this world with Wren and Torj, especially after that ending in Iron and Embers!
Thank you so much to the author and publisher for my advanced copy Thorns & Fire 🩶
Full RTC.

I HAVE NO NOTES.
❤️ I will go to the moon and back for Torj and Wren. The most gorgeous duo who have overcome so much and still fighting to be together.
✨ The clever magic systems with Wren go from strength to strength. It's so refreshing to see an FMC who has to defend herself/fight in other ways.
🫠 Torj. That man can do no wrong. I love his hard outer shell and soft middle. The moments be cares for Wren sends me into a giddy spell.
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Gorgeous book. A new favourite series.

This is what the middle of a trilogy should feel like. It deepens, sharpens, and devastates. And now I need the final book like air.

‘That man burns for you, Wren. The sooner you both catch alight the better, lest you set the whole world ablaze.’
You know how sometimes you get worried about second book syndrome for a book you loved?
WELL FEAR NOT MY FRIENDS.
Because this book was fantastic. From my previous review we know I was obsessed with this world, the characters and the direction the plot went.
I can confirm that I was screeching just as loudly while reading this one.
By the very first page there was action and the route was carved for the plot line, and I was here for it ALL. It was soft on the info dumping which helped to keep me engaged and when I tell you I couldn’t have fallen anymore for Torj?! WELL I DID. If there’s light at the end of the tunnel, I don’t want it. Let me stay in the warm embrace of the blissful words and actions of Torj Elderbrock, I beg you.
There was a point of frustration with Torj where his protective tendencies made me scream JUST TELL HER ALREADY but the yearning and love this man had for Wren… completely unmatched.
Wren was again, very awesome to follow, such a strong FMC. She has a strong will, stubbornness, but is incredibly smart and witty. Her scenes with Torj, and that spice factor, WOW, all I’m saying is Torj isn’t the only one with a dirty mouth
The camaraderie from characters was high, the banter was great and I did laugh/slightly rage and gasp at moments too! A full on emotional rollercoaster.
And would highly recommend tropes of grumpy x sunshine, touch her or him and unalive, forbidden romance, one horse, bodyguard x princess, found family, forced proximity and he falls first (HARD)!

Thank you NetGalley, Pan MacMillan and Tor Bramble for this ARC!
The book was exactly what I hoped for in a sequel—so much more worldbuilding (which I loved), new characters to obsess over, and even higher stakes. Wren’s character development has been massive since Iron & Embers, and by the end of this book, she truly feels like the queen she was meant to be.
I was completely hooked by the dynamic between Wren and Torj—the push and pull, the unresolved tension, and the bond that, thankfully, wasn’t fully severed. It gave their story so much emotional weight. Though a part of me wishes Wren had given Torj a harder time for trying to sever the bond and taking that choice away from her, alas, they are messy, powerful, and totally captivating together.
Also, can we talk about Kipp? He’s such a dark horse—always five steps ahead, even when it frustrates everyone around him. His conversations with Wren near the end (especially about claiming the throne of Delmira) were some of my favorite moments in the book.
The expanded worldbuilding was one of my favorite aspects of this sequel. Helen Scheuerer brilliantly draws us even deeper into Thezmarr, layering new lands, political intrigue, and magical systems in a way that feels both immersive and urgent. With this comes the introduction of new characters and their roles but without compromising the central narrative of the book.
Overall, Thorns & Fire is everything you want from a second book, and this series is shaping up to be a standout in the romantasy space, and I cannot wait to see what book three holds.

Helen Scheuerer returns with Thorns & Fire, a powerful sequel in The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy that expertly raises the emotional and narrative stakes. Picking up in the aftermath of the Battle of Drevenor, the story dives straight into the action, following Torj and Wren as they navigate political unrest, creeping war, and the complicated tangle of their shared past. It’s a story steeped in magic, legacy, and survival, with tension that doesn’t let up.
Wren's arc continues to be a highlight - complex, raw, and rewarding. Her strength and vulnerability are beautifully rendered as she begins to let others in, even while bearing the crushing weight of expectation. Torj, ever stoic and self-sacrificing, emerges as more than just a warrior; his quiet yearning for belonging and identity adds welcome emotional nuance. Together, their bond simmers with angst, longing, and slow-burn intensity that makes their romance both painful and irresistible.
What truly elevates this book is how it balances intimate character development with sweeping world-building. Scheuerer doesn’t fall into the “middle book” trap - instead, every chapter feels intentional, propelling the story toward what promises to be an unforgettable finale. The tension is palpable, the heartbreak real, and the final chapters deliver twists that left me reeling.
For fans of romantasy with grit, heart, and high emotional payoff, Thorns & Fire is a must-read. Scheuerer continues to prove why she’s an auto-buy author, and I’ll be counting down the days until the final book releases.

What you need to know
If you’re a romantasy fan, you absolutely must read this series. If Helen Scheuerer were a Pokemon, Thorns & Fire (and Iron & Embers) is post-evolution. The Raichu to the last series’ Pikachu. Although set in the same world, I feel like in this book Helen has grabbed pacing with both hands, in a way that means you basically cannot put it down.
⸻
📝 Synopsis (No Spoilers!)
The sequel to Iron & Embers, Thorns & Fires starts with Wren and Tori dealing with the aftermath of Book 1. They are battling a serious threat to their post-war world - a new kind of alchemy that seems able to destroy magic, and a rebel group wanting to overthrow the existing order.
⸻
💭 First Impressions
This was an eARC from NetGalley (thank you!) I’ve read Helen Scheuerer before so was keen to read this, but only realise when I started that I’d gotten muddled up and hadn’t read Iron & Embers yet. Cue me reading Iron & Embers and devouring it in about a day before being able to start on Thorns & Fire. Spoiler free first impression - we’ve just finished Book 1 on a bit of a cliffhanger, so open back up with Torj and Wren separate and dealing with the aftermath. Instantly gripping. But you definitely need to read Book 1 first - I quickly got very confused without!
⸻
👥 Characters
A lot of Wren’s character development has already happened by Book 2 - but she is continuing to recover from the scars left by the first war. Torj remains constant and steady. Zavier is an intriguing character, and Dessa a sweet and needed bit of female friendship for Wren. I love her motivations, but would be good to see her develop a little more. I do love the relationship between Wren and Thea a lot - they are sisters who clearly love each other dearly, but Wren still wants to assert her own independence and individuality. Kipp continues to be great and so funny - I absolutely love that he has literally no fighting skill whatsoever but still has an individual and beneficial way to shine. Plus adding a bit of light humour. Lastly - Devereux. There’s something going on there, I can sense it; a bit more to the story. It’ll be revealed in the next book I’m sure.
⸻
🌍 World-Building / Setting
World-building remains strong: several kingdoms, ruled by magic rulers and united since the first war. But their unity comes under threat due to growing pressure from the People’s Vanguard - a rebel group who wants to overturn the existing monarchy.
⸻
✍️ Writing Style and Pacing/Plot
Crunchy, sharp. I’ve said above - I think Helen has unlocked something with the pacing and plot of this one compared to her previous work. It’s a real page turner. There is so much yearning and chemistry, I can’t. Also, shout out to the dedication - I loved it.
⸻
📚 Overall Thoughts
I really loved this book. I think you’ll like it too if you liked the academia in Zodiac Academy; the banter, chemistry, politics and learning self-defence in From Blood & Ash; or the whipsmart heroine who knows how to do a bit of poisoning in Fourth Wing.
⸻
⭐ Rating: 5/5 stars

The perfect continuation to Wren and Torj’s story! After THAT ending, I was desperate for this sequel, and it did not disappoint in any way shape or form! Helen Scheuerer delivers more yearning, more tension and more action in Thorns & Fire and it’s just utterly delicious and unputdownable. And in true Scheuerer fashion, the ending will leave you in pieces and crying for the next book. Helen can do no wrong!

I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book! I was drawn back into the world as soon as I started reading. This story and the characters have their own vibe and as soon as I started reading, I knew I was in for a good time!
Themes and Tropes: Adult Epic Fantasy Romance, Hate-To-Love, Reluctant Bodyguard, Grumpy and Grumpy, Forced Proximity, Academic Setting, Found Family, Forbidden Romance, Fated Love, Prophecies, 'Touch Her And Die'
We pick up a few weeks from when the last book ended. Torj has a mission, to save Queen Reyna. He does, but it wasn't easy and things are going downhill for his side of this war, really fast.
But then he and Wren end up back together (not romantically) and the YEARNING! Oh my days!
'She had belonged to him once. For that fleeting moment, he'd been able to freely tuck her hair behind her ear, rest his hand on her thigh, press his lips to hers...Now, the chasm between them was greater than ever.'
Things are becoming more dangerous for the warswords. They start turning up dead. It sets everyone on edge and the way the rebel group leader is putting his plans in place, it doesn't look good for our characters.
Torj and Wren end up going back to her homeland to harvest some plants because she's trying to replicate the potion she created to save her friend in the previous book. What they find, changes everything. Not right away, but it changes everything.
Wren is having a hard time with being so close to Torj, given how he'd ended things before. She couldn't understand it and if there's one thing Wren can't stand, it's a mystery.
Torj gets a lot of stick for what he did to Wren, how he broke her heart and, bless him, he does try to keep things professional between them...
'He ached to touch her, to talk to her, and he fought every raging instinct to go to her, to take her pain as his own.'
He believes that what he did had been his only choice. He would do it again if it meant that she would be safe. And this is the theme for the majority of the book. Wren tries to replicate her potion, revealing answers to questions she didn't know she had. Her journey has been one of healing, first from the war and the losses. Now, heartbreak and her own self of self-worth. Her determination to recreate this cure and her devastation when it doesn't work, it's just so true to her character. But she always dusts herself off and tries to look at it from a different perspective. Her resilience and conviction make her such a badass. When she puts her regal hat on, well - she's an imposing force of nature.
This book is more about their romance than the story but I think it had to be. She and Torj participate in little battles of wills and it is an unbelievably entertaining read. These two had to get back on track in order to be stronger together. And I'm not complaining. Almost every other member of their friend group was in on the 'let's get them back together' bandwagon.
'That man burns for you, Wren. The sooner you both catch alight the better, lest you set the whole world ablaze.'
I loved everything about this book, the focus on the romance, the little gems of plot forwarding that didn't take away from the romance but kept the pace of the book up. If I had all three of these books in my possession, I would binge read them and then stare at the wall wondering where I go from here. As it stands, I don't have the third book and have to wait.
Other quotes that I adored:
'The heir of Delmira would break him. He had known it from the moment he'd first kissed her, and long before.'
'You're not expendable,' she said quietly, her gaze meeting his. 'Not to me.'.
"Do you know what it's like to want someone so badly you can't breathe?'.
"You are everything to me.'
'I miss talking with you. I miss your smile. I miss the weight of you in my arms. I miss...everything.'
'Elwren Embervale was made for him.'
'We were always stronger together.'

Iron & Embers was one of my top romantasy reads in recent years—it brought back that perfect balance of gripping plot and swoon-worthy romance. I was hooked from the very first lines, and by the end, I was desperate to return to the world of Thezmarr. Luckily, Helen Scheuerer is spoiling us readers and we didn’t need to wait long.
After a heartbreaking end, Thorns & Fire delivers yearning and longing in spades. Wern and Tjorn are older characters than what we typically see in romantasy (bless you again for this Helen), and this is noticeable on their interactions and on how the story, romance and conflicts unfold. Their tension and love are palpable and I am here for all of it!
Wren is the type of character I love the most: fierce, kind, and brilliantly smart! Tjorn remains an absolute dear, seamlessly shifting from saying the sweetest to the downright filthiest things. And the spice? Uff. It’s plentiful, and it delivers.
While this second book leans more into romance than action, the world-building continues to progress in the background—setting the stage for what I hope will be an epic next book filled with high-stakes and intrigue.
The ending… well, I’ll just say I need the next book immediately!
Huge thanks to Pan Macmillan | Tor Bramble and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thorns & Fire is the perfect sequel to Iron & Embers! It can be described in two words: emotionally intense!
While this series has less battle scenes and is less action-packed than the Legends of Thezmarr, it is more focused on Wren & Torj's romantic storyline, political intrigue and is full of mysteries and secrets! If you like academic environment, you will love this one!
Helen knows how to bring side characters forward, with such singular storylines that they could all have their own spin-off writing. Just take a look at Kipp, this guy is plotting so much that you could write a whole series about his schemings.
The banter in these series is always a delight, and this book is no exception.
Overall, emotions run really high in this sequel and the climax at the end is one you won't forget soon! It will leave you yearning for book 3 and you will love it!
(There is a One-Horse scene that you won't forget either....)
Thank you for allowing me to read Thorns & Fire in advance, I had so much fun ( I read that book in less than 2 days....), I love it and I hope it will get the fame it deserves!

Thorns & Fire is an INFERNO of magic, politics and romantic tension that will send every reader up in flame!
Firstly, as always I want to thank Helen for once again writing another book that captured my heart, mind and soul, along with PanMacmillan/Bramble/TOR UK and NetGalley for allowing me the honour of reading and reviewing this book early. The Ashes of Thezmarr Series is one of my most anticipated releases this year and book 2 does not disappoint!
Thorns & Fire is the second instalment in The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy and picks up almost immediately where book 1 left us with its heart wrenching end. I was a woman possessed from start to end as the pace, action and tension of this book does not let up from the very first page. Utterly addicted and emotionally invested, I devoured this book and don't regret a second of it, even though I will now inevitably have to wait even longer for the series conclusion.
The yearning, angst, slow-burn romance between Torj and Wren is even more intense than 'Iron & Embers' which I didn't think was humanly possible! What I love most is that their journey's, together and separately, continue to develop in new ways in this second book, nothing feeling repetitive or drawn out. Wren really comes into her own in this book, the personal growth so raw and realistic! Not only does she evolve as the genius alchemist we've always know she is, but also as a political powerhouse as she seeks to protect those she loves and bring ruin to her enemies. I will always love the romances that Helen creates in her stories but for me, the female empowerment running through this book was just as powerful if not more so!
The plot for Thorns and Fire continued to expand upon book one with all the usual (although still surprising) twists and turns that I've come to expect of Helen's masterful writing. As always the side characters play a huge role in the narrative rather than just standing on the sidelines. It was great to once again see some familiar faces - I won't ruin the surprise - and see how Wren especially starts to realise after her traumatic past that she is not alone and has so many people ready to support and fight right beside her. The Embervale sisters together were absolute QUEENS and I am so glad we got to see more of their dynamic together. What is always so impressive is how seemlessly all these characters are woven into the narrative, giving us call back to The Legends of Thezmarr Series, yet always with a new dynamic that continues to build this incredible world Helen has created. A bit like with the first series I am hoping for some sort of epic Avengers Assemble moment in the final book!
At about 70% I was terrified to keep going! Any reader of Helen's works know that she LOVES to torture us with dramatic endings and cliffhangers as we work our way through books in a series and this had all the signs that the ending to book 1 was going to be child's play in comparison. I won't spoil anything but as usual this QUEEN delivered the unexpected and left me screaming 'F**K YES!!" and desperate as always to dive into the final instalment which will release later this year.
As always I feel my words are totally inadiquet at expressing how much I truly loved this book, this series and of course Helen herself as one of my God Tier authors. I'm in awe of how incredible these book always are and grateful that she never keeps us waiting too long for the next release (I barely cope as it is). You know a book is special when you live in the balance of needing to finish it and yet desperate for it not to come to an end. I thank the furies that I discovered both Thezmarr Series and if you haven't read them yet...RUN and get your self immersed in one of the best fantasy world created since Middle Earth.
