Description
Two facts about Lake Los Angeles: one, there’s no lake, and, two, it’s nowhere near Los Angeles. That’s where Kiara ends up after her parents’ divorce—in the middle of nowhere—a land of Joshua trees, dust devils, and tumbleweeds.
Kiara’s mom calls it affordable housing. Kiara calls it hell.
At a one-room schoolhouse alongside the dry lakebed, she meets Cole, a brilliant green-eyed boy, the first spark of joy in the vast emptiness of the Mojave Desert—a place without sidewalks or streetlights. He’s her friend, but could he be more?
Kiara feels forgotten and alone as she parents herself and her younger brother. Growing up in the 1980s and 90s, she loathes the world she’s thrown into, a maze of double-crossing girls, mixed messages from guys, friends laden with trauma, and a single mom who always slams her door and cries.
When combat-boot wearing Carolyn shows up on the scene, Kiara doesn’t know what to think. Who can she trust if she can’t even trust herself?
There is a life beyond the desert. In her heart, she knows it.
Can she dare to dream a way out?

"a wonderful coming-of-age story. The writing is organic and textured using the harsh desert landscape as a mirror to Kiara’s emotional state. Descriptions like “The shadows of the buttes loomed larger” evoke a real feel of desolation, reinforcing Kiara’s isolation. LaPera also does an excellent job of portraying Kiara’s growing autonomy, particularly as she begins to withdraw from social expectations, choosing to control her own narrative instead of succumbing to the chatter from less-than-friendly classmates. Her relationship with Carolyn acts as a key turning point, and I like how Kiara’s perspective is challenged, pushing her toward greater self-awareness. This thoughtful tale of personal agency and identity through amazing, emotional settings makes LaPera’s novel a powerful and very worthy read. Recommended."

Although I am not typically a YA reader, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Kiara’s story was extremely compelling and relatable. I am eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series!

Wow!!! I really enjoyed reading Dare to Dream! This author has such a way with words that I felt as if I was transported right into the Mojave Desert with the character, Kiara. It is the type of book that I just wanted to hurry and do all my things so I could get back to reading. It’s been a while since a book has captured my attention like this and I’m so looking forward to reading more of the Desert of Dreams series.

Having grown up in a small desert town myself, I have to applaud the author of this book. No work of fiction has ever come closer than this tale, as to what it means to live in such a place. I really felt like I was back in my childhood. Back in a place, I won’t even visit. Amanda manages to weave real history and very real feelings into Kiara’s compelling story. I cried so many times I lost count. The desert, or any small town, doesn’t leave much opportunity to thrive or grow, it crushes almost everyone stuck there, adults and children alike. What Amanda is able to capture is that in an environment like this family, this town, daring to dream a way out, is sometimes all you can do. And the dreaming is brave, audacious, and the only garden where hope can really grow. This book is especially relevant in times like these. I think that everyone who has lived in a small town will see themselves in the characters in this book. Bring tissues, take breaks, and dare to dream just like Kiara and her friends.
