Description

She survives four queens. Will she fall to a tyrant?

Jane Boleyn watches from the shadows of the Tudor court. Where nothing is more powerful than a secret – or more deadly.

As the Boleyns rise, Jane rises with them. But the king’s love is a fickle thing. And when the royal gaze turns elsewhere, Jane uses the only weapon she has: her voice.

To survive in this dazzling, dangerous world she has mastered many masks: loving wife, devoted sister, and obedient spy. Now she must step out of the shadows.

She might outlive her rivals. She might know the court’s darkest secrets. But power rests on the edge of a tyrant king’s sword. Where will it fall next?

Philippa Gregory brings the Boleyn traitor into the light in an explosive story of one woman’s survival in the treacherous heart of the Tudor court.

I was very impressed with the historical research and the story and particularly the characters, who all seemed real to me.
Henry is depicted as becoming a tyrant, Thomas Cromwell was the only person who seemed to care about Jane Boleyn and there was Anne Boleyn and her brother George, both well drawn.
And also Catherine, who was married to the king when she was a teenager. I found her most touching. As I say the characters were brilliant and there were so many of them, that I consider that the author has done an excellent job depicting them.
Five stars for this one and it is highly recommended.

I was so excited to get a copy of this book - the author researches and writes really well and Jane Boleyn has been a shadowy figure that I longed to know more about. History has villified her as the accuser of her husband George and his sister Anne Boleyn; but the author shows there is much more to Jane, who served five of Henry's six wives. She was a practised courtier, surviving her husband's disgrace to continue to serve Jane, Anne and Katheryn. She never remarried, and the author provides a convincing case that she served Thomas Cromwell in the court.

Her part in the sad tale of Katheryn Howard, a young, empty-headed girl who loved life but failed to understand Tudor and court politics, is fascinating. The book portrays Katheryn really well; a girl keen to do things the correct way, but always putting herself and her needs first as a classic teenager. Jane is seen mentoring and guiding her, but also fatally indulging her over Thomas Culpepper.

Really an enjoyable read, if incredibly sad that such a clever woman had such a turbulent and possibly unfulfilled life and tragic end.

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for allowing me access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved this book! I always enjoy Philippa Gregory but did think that in general the Tudors have been written about to death. How wrong I was! The sheer skill of the author keeps us completely engrossed, even though we know what happens everybody in the end. I thought Jane was incredibly well drawn; such a real person who engages us and keeps us with her and allows us to understand her. Court life is a fantastic backdrop and all the other characters feel very alive. I enjoyed the first part, with Anne, so much that I was sorry when we moved on but I need not have been. Each queen is brought vividly to life. A particular stand-out for me was also the glimpses of Thomas Cromwell that we see. Such an interesting perspective. What more can I say? It was a wonderful read that kept me glued to it and I was so sorry to be finished it.

An absolute masterpiece of historical fiction. I was completely spellbound from the first page! Jane Boleyn was an astonishing woman who was hated but still remarkably intrinsic in court life. The power struggle in this reimagining of her life is so apparent and feels incredibly cut-throat but also lays bare the extremes a woman had to go through to survive in that time. Bursting with intrigue and death, we all know a few heads are going to roll but you will still be gasping in shock! This is a triumph of a return to the Tudor period by Philippa Gregory and hopefully not the last.

Boleyn traitor is an excellent addition to Philippa Gregory’s books about the Boleyns. While Jane Boleyn has been present before she has always been an outsider but her role was pivotal in the fate of her better known relatives.
Philippa Gregory draws you in to the intriguing and seductive Tudor court with her detailed and deeply researched writing.
I recommend this book without hesitation. Thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read and review
