Love of God and love of others are the two great commandments: Jean Vanier shows that these are the same thing. We express our love for God through compassionate care for one another and we encounter the love of God most tangibly through those closest to us. In his chapter-by-chapter exploration of the Gospel of John, Vanier explains how Jesus taught this lesson at every step of his ministry. He includes stories from his work with L'Arche that express in earthly terms the great privilege we have of developing our relationships with one another and with God.

Reading through this book during Easter while the Church is also reading from John's Gospel has been a great experience. I've always known John as the love gospel but Jean Vanier has given me a new appreciation and outlook in this book. The emotions and relationships of John's Gospel is broken down, broken up and presented in ways that had me grabbing my Bible to check, re-read and re-familiarize myself, not just the gospel but but other books all the way back to Genesis. The book is an easy read but it is a lot to take in so it really helped to be reading it during the Easter Season where I get homilies, the Gospel and the book working together to help in my understanding and growth. I really appreciated his real life applications in the book.
