After Regina’s husband abandons her and their four children: One son and three daughters, in Chicago, Regina relocates to Los Angeles, where she faces financial struggles as a single mother to care for her children. Jewish Family Services place the girls in an orphanage—where they stay until they graduate and attend programs to acquire essential skills to support themselves.

Rose, Josephine, and Dorothy Butlaw attended University High School in Los Angeles, each with her own remarkable talent—Rose excelled in math, Josephine showcased artistic talent, and Dorothy had a knack for journalism. Unfortunately, their journeys were hindered by jealousy, anti-Semitism, and meanness, which often overshadowed their hard work and blocked them from the recognition and opportunities they truly deserved.
