This book delivers a gripping and unsettling mystery that begins with Romy Kaplan’s disappearance and quickly becomes something far more complex. Although Romy appears on her own social media accounts insisting she is safe, the people closest to her know something is wrong. Her husband’s recent death lingers over everything and the circumstances surrounding it are troubling enough to raise immediate doubt.
Christy Ward’s involvement brings an engaging layer to the story. Her podcast usually focuses on cold cases, yet there is something about Romy’s situation that pulls her in. The investigation unfolds with a steady rise in tension as Christy and her team dig into Romy’s recent life, the strange details surrounding her husband’s death and the growing possibility that something far more sinister is at play.
The twists are sharp and well timed, and the use of modern technology adds a chilling edge that feels uncomfortably believable. It raises questions about safety, privacy and how easily truth can be distorted. At the same time, the ongoing development of Christy and her wider relationships adds warmth and continuity for readers who have followed the earlier books.
It is suspenseful, clever and frightening in all the right ways. A strong addition to the series and one that leaves plenty to think about.
