Maa-Ghut is a powerful young adult novel that blends thought-provoking social themes with an exciting suspense-filled story. With its themes of identity and justice, and its blend of humour and suspense, it will suit readers from 12-100.

Fourteen year old Evie Mycroft isn't the sort of girl to do nothing when she sees injustice. Or, that's what she imagines she would be like if she could escape her own insecurity. When she arrives home from school one day to find everything has changed - her family, her friends, her school, the town she lives in, even how she looks - she is forced to reassess her values. To make matters worse, something monstrous and world-changing lies beyond the town, and it's coming closer. Nobody seems to know or care. Only the Maa-Ghut, a persecuted minority seem to understand the threat. It's time for Evie to step up. If she can.

"A captivating, suspense-filled novel with thought-provoking social themes"

"Maa-Ghut is a powerful work of young adult fiction that blends thought-provoking social themes with an exciting, suspense-filled story. The plot moves swiftly and is both captivating and original. Litherland’s voice and tone have been well established and his use of descriptive imagery makes you feel as though you are living and breathing each moment with the characters. Themes of identity, injustice, and summoning the courage to speak truth to power tie the work together in an engaging way. However, what genuinely distinguishes Maa-Ghut from other books in its genre is Litherland’s talent for merging reality and fantasy, crafting a story that seems both transcendent and grounded. In addition, Litherland’s talent for weaving complex social, emotional, environmental and political issues into an original, cohesive story does wonders in bringing complex issues to the forefront, helping readers appreciate deeper elements of the story."

This is a really interesting way to present different perspectives - swapping people into one another’s realities. The author does a great job of giving Eva and Evie different voices and really taking you into their experiences. It wasn’t really credible that they would accept what was happening as quickly and easily as they did, but allowing them to do so certainly kept the plot moving. It’s a thought provoking book, too, which will have you thinking about diversity, inclusion and justice. Very interesting indeed.
