Description

In a land torn by conquest and kin-strife, it is not only warriors who shape the fate of Wales, but the women who dare to love them.

When Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd defies her royal destiny to marry Griffith ap Rhys, a landless prince and rebel heir, she steps into a life of danger, exile, and war. At the heart of Gwynedd’s royal court, her mother Angharad watches war creep ever closer. Haunted by visions of her sons marching to their deaths and torn between loyalty to her husband, Gruffydd and fear for her children, she must navigate a world where love is never safe and power is always a risk.

But Gwenllian and Angharad are not alone in their trials. The wives and lovers of warriors bear the silent burdens of ambition, betrayal, and longing—navigating fragile truces, fractured loyalties, and the unrelenting demands of men fighting to reclaim or defend a kingdom.

As Norman power encroaches and Welsh unity splinters, these women must decide where their hearts and loyalties truly lie. For Gwenllian, the path of love means wielding a sword as fiercely as any man—and learning that desire can be both a weapon and a wound.

Sweeping and intimate, Where Loyalties Burn is a tale of passion and resilience, where the bonds of marriage, family, and fate are tested by the fires of rebellion, and the quiet strength of women shapes the future of a nation.

A sweeping saga of love, legacy, and the women who shaped medieval Wales.

In a land torn by conquest and kin-strife, it is not only warriors who shape the fate of Wales, but the women who dare to love them.

This is the fourth book I’ve read by Arianwen Nun—and that says a lot, considering I’m normally an epic fantasy reader. The fact that her stories have kept me coming back speaks volumes about her skill as a writer. If you're a fan of romance, I highly recommend not only Where Loyalties Burn but her entire series.

What stands out most is the depth of research she's poured into 12th-century Wales. The historical detail adds authenticity and richness without ever slowing the pace of the story. Once again, thank you for another memorable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Power and loss in Medieval Wales

In “where Loyalties Burn”, Arienwen Nunn has crafted another exciting story set in medieval Wales, this time featuring Griffith and Gwenllian, daughter of Angharad and Gruffydd. It is a time when ambitions are impacted by greed for more power and land, which leads to shifts in allegiances, and betrayals. Griffith is driven more by his sense of honour and his desire to achieve his own kingdom, and he is actively supported by Gwenllian who is resolutely committed to her husband and his ambitions. Around them throughout are conflicts and conspiracies involving power bases across Wales, Ireland and England.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Rich Continuation of a Captivating Saga

This is the fourth book I've read in this series, and it continues to captivate me with its vivid setting, compelling characters, and the ongoing family struggles that keep me invested. Above all, I love the insight into 12th-century Wales. Arianwen Nunn has a remarkable ability to breathe life into both the landscape and the emotional depth of her characters. While the Welsh names posed a challenge in the first book, by now I’m fully immersed in the world, rooting for these characters like they're my own family.

It was tough for me to decide between four and five stars. The story was gripping, and I was hooked from the begining, but I did feel a bit cheated by the ending. I was left craving more closure, like a tease of perhaps more to come in the next installment. I felt more satisfied with the endings of previous books in the series. There were also a few editing slip-ups this time around.

Despite these minor drawbacks, it was an excellent read, and I highly recommend it to fans of historical fiction and immersive sagas.
