Description

Three newly recruited police constables, each with different motivations and backgrounds, embark on a three-year tour of duty in Palestine in the mid-1930s, as the British colonial authorities struggle to contain an uprising by the local Arab population. Sam, a young man seeking adventure, Spud, a freewheeling Eastender, and Jack, with a background in higher education and the arts, are thrown together as violence intensifies against the British forces of law and order.

The three recruits witness first-hand the struggle for land and rights in British Mandate Palestine, while being obliged to participate in British efforts to crush the Arab rebellion and restore order.

At such a dangerous time, will the three constables emerge unscathed from their experiences? What will they discover about land, homes, and livelihoods—the issues at the core of the still-unsolved question of Palestine? And why on earth has Jack, an artist at heart, chosen to become a policeman?

This is an evocative and thought-provoking novel set in British Mandate Palestine in the 1930s. Three newly recruited constables, Sam, Spud, and Jack, arrive with very different motives and personalities, but are bound together by duty and the turmoil of the Arab rebellion. What follows is a story that blends historical accuracy with deeply human struggles, as the young men are confronted with questions of loyalty, morality, and survival.

The author captures the atmosphere of the period with real skill, bringing to life the tense political backdrop and the daily dangers faced by both the local population and the British forces. Through vivid descriptions, readers are immersed in the streets, villages, and countryside where conflict unfolds, and where friendships are tested under immense pressure. The constables are not simply figures of authority; they are young men searching for identity and meaning in an environment that forces them to question their values.

Sam’s thirst for adventure, Spud’s irreverent humor, and Jack’s more reflective artistic nature all bring different shades to the story, and their experiences feel both believable and affecting. The novel does not shy away from difficult questions about land, homes, and rights, themes that resonate as powerfully today as they did almost a century ago.

This is more than a war story or a police procedural. It is a carefully researched and engaging work of historical fiction that places readers in a moment of upheaval while allowing them to reflect on the choices individuals make when caught in the machinery of empire and rebellion. Fassam-Wright has produced a novel that is at once informative, unsettling, and compelling, one that will appeal to fans of historically grounded, character-driven fiction.
