Description
A young lawyer, struggling to move on after a tragic accident, the beautiful woman with an extraordinary secret he meets in the dairy aisle, and his client, the scientist who has stumbled upon a world changing technology. All have roles to play as the world sleepwalks into nuclear war.
Available in ebook and softcover formats, Anomalous Events in an American Suburb is a 300 plus page science fiction/romantic fantasy/action thriller set in the American Midwest, world capitals, and across time and space. Part history, part mythology, the novel touches upon actual government anti-gravity research, metaphysical romance, the ancient Greek Eleusinian Mysteries, Harry Truman, Cole Younger’s lost treasure, Carl Jung, and nuclear disarmament.
Kansas City attorney Essie Kemp runs into a beautiful woman in a grocery store’s dairy aisle, who reads his every thought. The same day, while hiking in a rural area, he has a disturbing encounter with a low flying, lenticular, silver disk. Several days later, he encounters the same woman, Zoe Eliades, at a social event. They quickly grow obsessed with each other. Essie's client, Ray Langstaff, is a government scientist who runs a secret program at the Department of Energy's Kansas City National Security Campus, a massive operation with over seven thousand employees. He reveals to Essie what they've discovered, as well as what they know about Zoe's family.

I went into this book blind and my god, that is the way to do it. You have absolutely no idea where it's going and every crazy thought you could have had, would end up happening which is so fun. It's tragic, but also beautifully done. It's great for people who are conspiracy theorists as you just get to go wild and that's why I loved it. It is so unique and different to any other book, definitely recommend
This book was so strange! Absolutely fitting with a title like “Anomalous Events”. I was drawn to this book from the cover alone.
Myers tries to bring together a lot of influences and genres, and often that kind of daring pays off by producing something distinctive. It reminds me a bit of works like Cloud Atlas, or some of China Miéville’s genre-blending efforts, though with less polish and perhaps more romance metaphysics. He aims high to combine myth, governmental conspiracy, romance, metaphysical elements, and existential threat into a surprisingly humorous storyline.
I like that it doesn’t just use aliens or spycraft as wallpaper; the mythic and symbolic elements suggest a concern with what these anomalous events mean, not just what they are. Because it bounces between so many different themes, there are some parts that drag and then there are some parts that make you go, “what the heck?” It’s an adventure from beginning to end.
This book will probably speak to the X-File fans (hi, it’s me 🙋🏼♀️) and fans of conspiracy theories/ historical nods who enjoy a touch of romance.
3.5 stars
Essie Kemp has lost his family to a tragic accident and seems to have lost direction and meaning in his life, when he meets a beautiful woman in the supermarket. He keeps running in to her and her family and something seems extraordinary about them - almost supernatural. We follow Essie's story as he works through mysteries of the universe and uncovers his own hidden secrets.
Anomalous Events in an American Suburb is a creative and interesting story that mixes science fiction with Ancient Greek mythology and a bit of romance all together. There was one odd bit in the middle that seemed to be a separate story that was unrelated, didn't really add much to the plot and didn't seem to fit. The plot seemed to jump a bit from event to event, and didn't appear to transition very well as I was reading the book, but in the end it all tied up nicely and the disconcerted transitions made sense.
I am rating this book 4/5 stars - I did enjoy it and recommend it to fans of science fiction and mythology. Thank you to Kyknus Books for providing this book as an eARC for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Anomalous Events in an American Suburb is a quirky, unsettling, and strangely captivating read. Ross S. Myers has crafted a story that blends the ordinary with the extraordinary in such a way that you never quite know what’s real and what’s imagined. The suburban setting felt both familiar and uncanny, and that tension really pulled me in.
The writing style had a rhythm that worked well for the strange, otherworldly atmosphere. I’m very glad I had the chance to read this early, and I’m excited to see what Myers writes next.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
this was an amazing scifi element that I was expecting and enjoyed how suspenseful this was in the plot of the book. The characters were everything that I was looking for and enjoyed how good the characters were used in this universe, The concept was brilliant and enjoyed getting into this world. Ross S Myers has a strong writing style and had characters that I cared about and loved getting to read this.
Anomalous Events in an American Suburb is an ambitious blend of science fiction, romantic fantasy, and historical intrigue. The story follows Kansas City attorney Essie Kemp, who encounters a mysterious woman in a grocery store, setting off a chain of events that weave together government secrets, ancient myths, and global crises.
I loved the intricate world-building and the way Myers connects real historical events with speculative elements. The characters are compelling, and the story moves across timelines and locations in a way that keeps things engaging.
That said, the plot can feel dense at times. There’s a lot going on, and I wish some threads had been a bit tighter to let the main story shine even more.
Overall, it’s a layered, thought-provoking read that mixes history, fantasy, and intrigue in a unique way.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kyknus Books for the eARC.
