This was a strong start to the Threads of Destiny series, it had that fantasy element that I was looking for and was engaged with what was happening. I enjoyed this as a opening chapter and am excited to read more in this universe. The characters had that overall feel that I was wanting and enjoyed the concept. Claire E. Jones wrote this well and was engaged from the first page.

Book Review: Love In The Face of Death by Claire E. Jones
Provided by: NetGalley / Clairjoyance Publishing

I picked this one up through NetGalley—thank you, NetGalley!—as an ARC read post-publication. The premise immediately caught my eye, the cover art is gorgeous, and with so few reviews out there, I wanted to give it a shot.

I’m glad I did. This was a genuinely fun, engaging read. The FMC is pansexual, which adds dimension to the romance and creates a broader range of chemistry throughout the story. It’s definitely more plot than spice—I’d give it about one chili pepper—and I appreciated that balance. Just when I thought I had things figured out, the author added small twists and thoughtful layers that kept me interested.

What really impressed me was the worldbuilding. As the first book in a series, it could easily have fallen into overly dense lore or a slow start, but instead the author wove the magic, character backgrounds, and divine elements seamlessly into the storytelling. It’s quick, easy to read, and refreshingly unique in how gods, magic, and people all interact.

The story follows Kelah, the sole survivor of a shipwreck who washes up on an island full of danger—and eventually unexpected found family. She’s escaping a brutal, war-torn homeland where her people (the Blessed) are being targeted and killed. As she fights to survive and rebuild her life, she meets two love interests, each offering their own spark and a touch of steam. The cozy small-community vibe, strong found family elements, and emotional warmth make the journey feel heartfelt and hopeful.

My only complaint? The Kindle formatting. If you can overlook that, you’ll have a delightful, imaginative read on your hands.
