Description

You can change your name. But you can't change your past . . .

Eighty-one-year-old Elsie Fitzpatrick lives a quiet life in the suburbs. Aside from being a curmudgeon who minds everyone else’s business, few would suspect she harbours a secret she’s worked hard to bury.

Because when it comes to murder, no one ever suspects little girls or old ladies. And Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick – once a little girl and now an old lady – has a strange history of people in her life coming to a foul end.

When an elderly neighbour is found dead, no one suspects a thing – until they uncover Elsie's true identity: Mad Mabel, the youngest Australian in history to be convicted of murder, over sixty years ago.

The police are asking questions. The media is circling.

Has the past finally caught up with Mad Mabel?

Or is it time for her to finally set the record straight?

What a glorious read - I absolutely flew through Mabel’s story. It was everything I’d expected from a Hepworth thriller, and then so much more.

The cover frames Mabel as a caricature, a thread that runs through the early chapters of the book. But as her story deepens, the audience, the world, and Mabel herself come to see who she truly is. The result is a tale that is wickedly funny one minute, and downright heartbreaking the next. From that pain and trauma comes a heartwarming and hopeful story of family, love, and friendship.

The story is perfectly paced, and Hepworth once again beautifully captures the texture and warmth of Australian community in her writing. I’d highly recommend for anyone craving a rich and genuinely compelling thriller.

Thank you to the publisher for an advance copy of this book. Opinions expressed are my own.

Oh my goodness!
I chose this because I’d seen a discussion on netgalley of books people gave 5 stars to; this was hands down the best ive read for ages and would be a six star!
It follows an octogenarian who is clearly eccentric but had lived a troubled and challenging life. She was the youngest child convicted of murder.
Its the story of her childhood and as an old lady… the characters are all utterly believable and you feel really invested in them.
I cant do the story justice; it utterly captured me and moved me
