The story of the Nativity is read in homes, schools and churches all through Advent, year after year. The emotion and detail in Anne Yvonne Gilbert's exquisite illustrations will make this picture book of the first Christmas stand out in the memory with all the awe and splendour that the birth of Jesus evokes. The retelling follows the traditional sequence of episodes and echoes the language of the Gospels themselves. A picture book to be treasured.

Yes, the world abounds in picture books about the Christmas story. I really like this new one, though. The pictures are soft, but detailed and realistic. I never like cartoonish pictures, but these are my style. I read Jesus is Born, by Sophie Piper, to my six-year-old, and he immediately asked if I could print it. He says he really likes the pictures and the story. I appreciated that it includes both the story from Luke and the one from Matthew, and makes it clear where each part of the story comes from. The story is told briefly, but clearly, without extra details. I would say that even a 1- or 2-year-old would enjoy it. I rarely buy Bible Stories, but this is one I would pick uhp and enjoy reading to my little ones.
