Description
Four old widowers gather in a village pub once a week to share their frustrations with modern-day living and their increasing sense of impotence in a world that is not as they’d like it.
On one of their visits, they learn of the suicide of a local farmer, brought about by his despair at having to deal with repeated instances of fly-tipping on his land. With the authorities seemingly unable to bring a stop to this countryside scourge, the four old codgers decide not to simply accept their status as powerless observers, but instead to actually do something.
That is, they decide to become vigilantes – with one specific objective in mind: to capture ‘in the act’ whoever is responsible for the fly-tipping. Little do they know, when they make this decision, how it will affect their shared sense of impotence or to where it will ultimately lead them.

I really enjoyed the author's writing style, and the focus on characters that don't normally take center stage in novels (older people). I am American, and think British people will enjoy this novel more because there's a lot of discussion on current events/politics/cultural issues in Britian. But I still liked the story and funny adventures.
Thank you to the author, Troubador, and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. All opinions are my own.
I felt like I was at that table and in those conversations with this quirky group of characters. The book feels like a mix of modern and classic in tone and content and it really works well. The author writes very well and maintains a strong pace, making an action packed story out of fly tipping and pensioners. A really good read.

this was a great little read. one that you can distance enough from the characters enough to have fun with it but also one where you can also relate in some ways too. i love how it draws you in and this feels like you too have pulled up a chair with this group and putting the world to rights.
i have a relative who goes to the pub, same time, same group, same day and has done for 36 years now! so when i heard from him today it made me giggle coming to read this after he went on his way. same time, same place, same group of people. the only thing now is he does need a lift getting there, haha.
i wondered whether i should ask him to ask his group what they would do if they as a group of pensioner had the same situation with fly tipping and brewing anger over the situation as in this book. but maybe i would want to know, lol. it did add a really great side chuckle to my read though. it also felt important and current. and i especially liked how our main characters really were this group who dont usually get their voices or staring roles in books.
a really different and great read.
