Description

Odile, a French woman living in Edinburgh, may be getting older, but she refuses to fade away or conform to what is expected of her. Like her friends, old and new, Odile is a testament that mature women acquire their strength through the struggles of life.

After all that experience, sacrifice, rage even, she is determined to remain relevant. She intends to live her precious life to the full and very much on her terms.

Odile has worked hard at leaving her past behind. With time, she has forged her own path and raised her daughter, Rowan, singlehandedly, against the odds. Yet, the past has a habit of resurfacing, no matter what. Besides, what she calls her past belongs to her daughter too, and it is Rowan who will put Odile to the test.

Is Odile really the woman she thinks she is? Can she find her way of making things right and discover her own way of ageing well? Her quest begins.

i really enjoyed following Oldie's journey and i felt like she could be so many woman. she truly made me both glad and inspired by having these woman that have kept going through a world that lens doesn't often give woman the deserved or even chance they should get. and to be sadly honest a book like this has never felt more relevant. are we going backwards? Oldie is an age that we see the world likes to make disappear or certainty underestimates. Oldie has a strength but also a vulnerability about her. but putting all that aside it was just a great read with a great character story so i too dont want to put the only reasons for this book being about age,sex etc because that seems unfair and takes away from what the author has done here.
i loved looking at the relationships in this book, the strength and wisdom in it really got me at times.
Oldie refuses to fade into the background and good for her. the unfairness and raw truth surrounding some of the moment also truly got me in my gut. the want to make them invisible or even somehow mock this age group never has looked more ridiculous. and yet still it goes on.
Oldie and what she goes through in this book has me caring for her, inspired by her and angry with and for her.
i have the utmost respect and love for the woman in my life. and i will stand tall with them all. this book showed how sometimes even that means nothing if the world doesn't listen or even tramples on those that simply dont wont to be unequal or even battered down to something weird and sinister like we seem to be in our current world.
i didn't feel despair after reading this book like i currently do when reading or thinking about the state of things. it made me inspired and want to love all the people in my life even more and lift them where i can. and never let one of them feel invisible.
id love to read more from this author.
