'I'm excited to have found a new favourite detective' CLAIRE DOUGLAS
'Edge-of-your-seat tension, wit and heart - fantastic!' LISA JEWELL

★ 'Combining humor, pathos, and genuine surprise, it's another home run from Billingham.' PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, STARRED REVIEW
It's Detective Miller's deadliest dance...
The Shadow Step: One taken simultaneously by a pair of dancers facing the same direction, one of them behind and slightly shifted leftwards ('in the shadow')
Typically, such a step perfectly demonstrates synchronized elegance. It showcases a couple in near telepathic harmony with one another. It does not normally end with someone stone-dead in a lake.
DS Declan Miller is a magnet for strange cases, but how can he catch a killer when the man confessing to the crime is clearly innocent? Things rapidly escalate when the murder that isn't really a murder at all attracts the unwanted attention of a drugs Queenpin, a deranged ex-squaddie and a lovesick gangland enforcer. Then a student is kidnapped...
Throw in a wobbly dog, a pair of ceramic leopards and the distracting smell from a local biscuit factory, and - if he wants to save a young man's life - Miller has little choice but to waltz all the way into the shadows.

I absolutely loved this book. I love Mark Billingham’s books and am so glad he continued with the D S Miller series.
It has a great pace, great storyline and humour. It made me laugh out loud at times 😂
We have the ghost of the D S Miller’s wife Alex, the Cutler’s, and a kidnapping which makes for an interesting read.
Another hit for Mark Billingham!!
Thank you for the advanced copy - Netgalley and publisher,
I absolutely adored this book and devoured it over a couple of days! It has easily been one of my favourite books of the year and I can’t wait to read more from the author in the future.

I love this author and absolutely love this series, it is fast paced and has such a fab plot. We also have the ghost of the protagonists wife, drug lords & kidnapping all making an appearance. DS Miller has humour as well as pathos & is such a wonderful character. Well done Mark Billingham for yet another rip roaring read, I couldn’t put it down!!

I'm so pleased this is going forth as a series, as it's one of the most enjoyable out there right now. Declan Miller is perfect, just because he's not perfect, and it's because he's an absolute comedian who happens to be a bloody good detective that forms the backbone of this newly evolving story. Of course, there's the whole police team, all with pitch-perfect foibles that blend so deliciously. There's the dancing, in theory Miller's go-to when times are tough, but often acting as a simile for the case he's working on. Dance Class is led by two formidable former detectives, as well, so a work/life crossover helps the grey cells think outside the box.
In The Shadow Step, there's the odd murder or two, drug dealing and crime lords, though the latter often appear in sequins and stilettos, just to add to the enjoyment. Miller's constant supply of Dad Jokes is always in bad taste and entirely appropriate for the story, as ever - even when the ghost of his wife, Alex, is in the room too, fondling the rats. (Yes - this is really a scene in the book!)
I've not missed a Mark Billingham book since the first Thorne was published 25 years ago, and on the basis of this new one he's going to stay at the top for a very long time.
I have just finished The Shadow Step by Mark Billingham, and honestly, it flew by so fast I barely noticed the pages turning. It was such a treat to catch up with DS Declan Miller and the whole gang again, they’re such a likeable bunch, each with their own quirky personality, and that really brings a nice warmth to the whole story.
It starts with a body pulled from a lake and this guy who immediately confesses… except he seems completely innocent. From there it spirals into kidnappings, some seriously dodgy gangland stuff, and a case that just keeps getting more tangled and complicated. The pace is relentless, twists keep coming, there’s plenty of sharp humour, and those slightly offbeat little touches that make this series feel so distinctive.
It’s fast, funny, and properly entertaining. Another cracking addition to the series that hooks you right from the first page and doesn’t let go. Highly recommended!

This is a brilliant series from a superb writer; plot , character and setting are all first rate and the writing is superlative. DS Declan Miller is a sad character and yet very funny at the same time. Widowed when his wife was killed, his late partner features and helps Declan with his decisions. Blackpool is an interesting town in which to set these stories and the array of characters, including his sidekick and his ballroom dancing friends, are well portrayed. As usual the plot is intriguing, set in the drugs underworld and the book is wholly satisfying.
