Description
Did you hear that? Was it the effervescent fizz of sea foam? The chattering of pebbles being tumbled about by the ocean? Or was it something?or someone?else? Beneath the waves of Prince Edward Island, mermaids have lived for centuries, their stories hidden in the tides. Each shore, cove, and beach holds their secrets and stories, and an ancient magic that flows around the tiny island.
Get ready to meet these mystical creatures in Mermaids of Prince Edward. As you travel with them from the red sands of Cavendish to the rugged cliffs of Thunder Cove, the Island's mermaids will show you fascinating glimpses into their secret world and lives.
The illustrations throughout the book are inspired by Art Nouveau, mixing fantasy with the beauty of PEI. This collection invites readers to think about a world that exists under the waves, a world where every beach has a story waiting to be told. Whether you are new to PEI or have walked its shores many times, this book will give new perspectives to familiar places we all love.

This was utterly charming!
I visit PEI every summer because after seeing it for the first time the place like home away from home, so when I saw this book I really wanted to read.
This did not disappoint and exceeded my expectations: we had amazing artwork and 1 page stories that really add personality and a new sense of wonder to each beach/cove area of PEI. I think kids would love this book and have fun imagining more tales from each mermaid attached to each place. Also I think it adds a little more wonder for adults who live or visit the island too.

a charming book of illustrations adds a little of the fantastical to various beaches and coves across PEI, with a brief story to accompany each. as a mermaid lover who very much hopes to visit PEI one day, this was a very fun read that i can see both kids and adults enjoying. i particularly appreciated the artwork of greenwich, panmure island, and tyne valley.
Mermaids of Prince Edward Island swims into your heart like a siren's call from the sea.
Alison Wolvers' children's book has creative stories that are coupled with breathtaking artwork that it sure to draw in readers of all ages. Each story and character leaves you wanting and seeing more, but we're only given a taste of the full picture. It is the kind of tease you won't actually hate, as it allows you to fill in the blanks and let your thoughts wonder to what else might be lurking under the waters of Prince Edward Island.
The only thing I wish was different about this book was that it held a tale or two from actual mermaid tales that might be housed around the island. It would've breathed even more life and wonder into the stories here.
The author has truly crafted a beautiful pearl for the imagination with these stories, and I hope to see more from this author in the future.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the arc copy of this book!
I was initially attracted to this book because it was set in PEI, a place I know well. I didn't realize at first that this was a picture book, I assumed from the tags that it was a middle grade story. But my enjoyment of the book was not lessened for that fact. I liked the queer rep, my first thought opening this book was: I wonder if there will be any queer mermaids, because what would suit queers more than being a mermaid? And then a few pages in, I spied a mermaid with top surgery scars, and that was only the start. That was lovely, and the stories were soothing little vignettes. You can stop anywhere, because each story is contained. This would suit bed time story reading for sure! Nothing bad happens, just little glimpses into a folklore filled world.
I sometimes wished the stories were a little longer, and sometimes it felt like there was a setup for a continuation that never came. My sole real critique is that all of the mermaids had such sculpted bodies, and there wasn't a lot of diversity there. From a representation standpoint, that's an issue. From a biological standpoint, it also doesn't make sense. Mermaids are ocean-dwelling creatures, who swim the depths of the sea. All ocean dwelling mammals that are known to us have thick layers of fat to keep their bodies warm, so why not mermaids too? Why not celebrate that fact? This is especially so in the context of a picture book aimed for children, who are still forming their conceptions of themselves and their own bodies. This is the place to embrace the diversity of bodies we come with and grow into.
Overall, this was an enjoyable quick read that would do well as a bedtime story.
Mermaids of Prince Edward Island is an absolute delight, and what I loved most were the stunning illustrations. Each page is filled with beautiful Art Nouveau–inspired artwork that blends fantasy with the natural beauty of PEI’s beaches, coves and red‑sand coastlines. The mermaids feel magical yet rooted in the island’s folklore, and the whole book has this dreamy, enchanted look that makes you want to linger on every page. It’s visually gorgeous, whimsical and full of charm - a book you enjoy as much for the art as for the stories it hints at.
Stories about mermaids around PEI.
This would be more fun for someone familiar to PEI. I was hoping to learn/see more of the island through the book. But the premise was very cute.

I have a special love for PEI since my husband and I honeymooned there, and jumped at this book as soon as I saw it. The illustrations are gorgeous, and I would say they're the star of the show. The little snippets of story about each mermaid are sweet and lovely. Very well done by the author!
Mermaids of Prince Edward Island is filled with short stories of Mermaids in different places. I really enjoyed the illustrations.
I got this book as an ebook ARC from Netgalley, and this book makes me want to visit PEI!
I started buying books by local authors when we travel. I love visiting little book shops and seeing the local author's section. We have a shelf of illustrated children's books from all over the US and Canada and Mexico.
This is one that I would buy as a souvenir. I love the artwork and the stories of each cove. I am a huge fan of mermaids and love the connection to the sea and the land. This book is just beautiful and I would be proud to have it as a harcover or paperback on my shelf.
Thank you Netgalley and Nimbus Publishing | Acorn Press for the ebook ARC. Allison Wolvers did an amazing job!
