At the end of her first week on the job, rookie deputy Kelly Mackinaw finds herself trapped on Lost Lake with three unidentified bodies, twelve potential killers and one vengeful ghost.

On a remote lake deep in the Adirondacks, Kelly, a tough, practical country girl and Mitch Herkemer, a Vietnam vet with extensive knowledge of illegal substances and a shaky understanding of Eastern religions, rush to solve a gruesome mystery before a simmering feud between a group of rich swingers and a family of local squatters erupts into a full-scale shooting war.

As the first female deputy in Wanakena County, Kelly can see with an outsider’s eye. As a witness to the mysteries of Lost Lake in his youth, Mitch has troubled insights of his own. Kelly sees corruption and lies everywhere, while Mitch sees tangled auras and conflicting moral responsibilities. Both soon realise that the source of the conflict lies in the brooding village of Shallow Rock, where a sinister cabin squats in the stinking muck of Shakers Bog.
