Description

Andrew White, the proprietor of a country garage, is witness to a terrible crime.

He sees four of his mechanics - Pop Wells, Bert Wickery, Dave Chitty and Harry Forthright - run over a woman while they are on an unauthorized ride in a customer's car.

Thinking there had been no witnesses, the men fail to report the accident.

And White sees the perfect opportunity for blackmail.

The mechanics’ lives are ruined, they’re poor and miserable, stuck at White’s business with no hope of escape from his threats.

Becoming desperate, they plan to steal White's savings, drawing lots to decide who shall break in, and agreeing that the thief shall remain anonymous.

The next morning, White is found murdered, his savings stolen.

Who was it that decided to kill him instead of just steal his money?

Soon the four men are turning on the other, trying to figure out who drew the short straw and who killed White…

The money they planned to hide for their own benefit is gone.

Someone knows their secret and plans to profit by it…

Can they figure it out before the police do?

Can they make it through without their plans coming to light?

And will they all be friends by the end, when the killer is finally revealed?

Pick Up the Pieces is a gripping thriller from a master crime writer J F Straker.
