Description

The grandmas in Lili’s building show her the secrets of gardening while preparing dishes from around the world in this buoyant companion to Dumplings for Lili.

Lili’s apartment building is having a block party! Lili heads down to the garden to get Nai Nai green onions for her fried rice recipe. There, she’s visited by all the grandmas in the building, who stop by to get ingredients for their block party dishes, bring scraps for Mr. Nibbles, the building’s composter, and show Lili the secrets to growing and maintaining a happy garden. When it’s time for the party, everyone brings a different delicious rice dish from around the world—Hashweh from Teta, Arroz Roja from Abuela, Carrot Risotto from Nonna, and more. After a busy morning in the garden, Lili’s extra proud of the strawberries she’s worked hard to grow!

A Garden for Lili is a cheerful, engaging, and informing celebration of urban gardening and the ways food connects our communities from award-winning picture book creator Melissa Iwai.

Thank you so much to Norton Young Readers and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.

Lili is excited for the block party, she’s been growing strawberries and cannot wait to show them to everyone. She is asked to pick something for her Nai Nai whilst there and soon each of the garden grandmas show up asking her help to gather an ingredient, each one giving her a task to keep the plants healthy.

I loved this book so much, firstly it’s incredibly educational and is such a perfect guide to help children learn to grow produce on their own, with all the tips and tricks neeeded for it. It’s also a really sweet story of community, kindness and dedication. Sharing how hard work can pay off if you do the right things and have the right help.

The illustrations were stunning, so beautiful to look at throughout, seeing Lili in the little community garden and all the different produce growing there and her looking after everything that was there. Seeing all the different types of grandmas that she loved and that she helped and that helped her. It’s such a sweet story and I do recommend it, it’s really adorable very sweet and has great tools and tricks to go along with it.

What a delightful and informative book about gardening basics and the collaborative nature of community. Lili's neighborhood is having a block party and all of the grandmas (whose dishes are always the yummiest, of course!) are busy preparing their food. But when each of them needs a little something from the garden, Lili becomes distracted from tending to her strawberries. Like a busy bee, she runs to and from, making sure everything is taken care of until...whoops! Those pesky squirrels get into her strawberries! Will she get them picked in time for the party?

I absolutely love how there were so many grandmas representing different cultures, and I love the inclusion of composting food scraps. The illustrations are so bright and beautiful, and I loved the more in-depth explanations of the grandmas' gardening tips in the back pages. Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a free eARc in exchange for an honest review.

This is a really beautiful book about gardening and community.

I loved the community aspect of this book so much, especially in an age where high density living is more common. I really enjoyed reading this with my child and identifying the different fruit and vegetables. It would also be great for kids interested in gardening.

I thought that this was such a lovely story to read! The story was well written and it was easy to read and understand. The illustrations in the book were just wonderful, they were nice, bright and colourful and they brought the story to life and I loved the message that comes through in the story. I enjoyed the ending of the book and the details about the compost tumbler and tips for a healthy garden at the end. It is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended!
