Description

Draft day arrives, and Ciro Sinsal will do anything to keep his family safe.

In Maize, war is tradition—and Ciro’s wife comes from a line of warriors who answer the call without hesitation. When conscription looms, Ciro makes a desperate choice to protect the people he loves.

After an unexpected encounter with his Talonhound, Ciro discovers he can see disease—its spread, its hunger, its intent—like no one else can. Hoping to avoid the front lines, he enlists as a medic, believing his strange gift can save lives without demanding something in return.

He is wrong.

As war with the neighboring Coalition intensifies, Maize takes a keen interest in Ciro’s evolving abilities. Disease does not only heal or kill—it can be moved, shaped, redirected. What begins as mercy becomes strategy. What was meant to save begins to wound.

When the consequences of war follow Ciro home to Cornia, Maize’s capital, politics tighten their grip and peace becomes a fragile illusion. Caught between loyalty, family, and a power he no longer fully controls, Ciro must decide how much suffering he is willing to redirect in the name of love—and who will bear it when he does.

In a world where war demands sacrifice, defying death does not end it. It only changes its course.

Advance Praise

"The raw emotion of this book, the moving disease magic system, and the PTSD were SO well written. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"

"There were several times I lost the ability to read and had to wait for my tears to dry. WHAT emotion."

"It’s uncommon for me to get emotional with a story these days, and I felt a surge of beautiful tragedy with this book. It’s a grounded, relatable, and resonating story that blends well with the fantasy setting and geopolitics in a way that adds strong dynamism and scale, and it’s a story that I really enjoyed reading through."

"I especially loved how you described the visual aspects of sickness—it was effortless to envision what Ciro saw in these bodies, and the contrast between the beauty of disease and the horrors it wreaks is just sublime."

"⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Overall, I’m glad to say that I felt engaged from beginning to end—more than that, I connected emotionally to the characters than I typically do with stories nowadays, so thank you for providing that!"

"This story has a powerful emotional foundation built on family, guilt, and sacrifice. The magic system is intriguing, the beasts are memorable, and your twists are bold and effective."

"This book is a great story that relates to real life issues (like PTSD, war, and relationship struggles). ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The MMC has a falling out with his best friend and communication struggles with his spouse. Benjamin does a wonderful job at expressing the way that they overcome those issues and move past them, all mixed within a magical world."

"It's definitely a fresh, imaginative magic system with a relatable storyline through a virus causing an epidemic. The characters are relatable and the lead will do anything for his family. Absolutely anything. I loved this book so much. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"

Marketing Plan

A social media campaign (@bengar_kamphuis on Instagram and TikTok) has built up to the cover reveal and overall premise of the story. More emphasis on the moral of moving disease on people and using it to save people they love is being hit hard. This includes:

  • Saving someone you love with the gift of moving disease
  • The consequences of moving disease, making the decision making more difficult
  • Doing whatever you can to protect your child, including making morally gray decisions
  • The implications of war on mental health and civilization

ARC campaigns have begun organically, through NetGalley and Booksirens, an agency assisting with their own ARC resources, and then the beginning talks of a book tour.
