This is a solid, atmospheric mystery set in York District Hospital in late 1979, against the backdrop of the Yorkshire Ripper’s reign of terror.

The story starts when night porter Johnny Jewell discovers a senior consultant’s body hidden in the mortuary fridge.

This is a good police procedural with a character-driven investigation seen through the eyes of ordinary people — especially Johnny, who is a good character and really brings the story to life.

It shows the attitudes of the time and place: the casual institutional misogyny of the era, the grim hierarchy of a big hospital, and the low-level dread hanging over the city made it a believeable read.

The pacing is slow, but I enjoyed how it builds character and setting.

The ending delivers a satisfying, cleverly executed reveal that feels both surprising and earned.

This book has been a thrilling rollercoaster ride! Loved the story and the plot twists! The writing was immaculate and so perfect.
I couldn't keep this book down even for a second.
