Ever wondered if one choice, one weekend and one person can change everything?
Writer Tess has always been accused of being overly romantic by her best friend Carys.
And when they meet cheerful stranger Spencer and his more reserved wingman Ryan on the sleeper train to a wedding, Carys is all-in with the shared champagne while Tess holds back. Yet there’s a jolt of attraction between her and Ryan that Tess can’t ignore – a sense of recognition that feels real.
As the weekend unfolds, with a twist that nobody saw coming, she asks herself – how do you know when it’s your life-changing moment?

No notes. An absolutely lovely easy read with likeable characters who seem authentic and relatable. I think it might be my favourite yet, and that’s not a small statement!

Oh. My. Gawd! Mhairi McFarlane you broke my heart and put it back together again. I loved this book so much!
What I adore most about McFarlane's books is that you feel like you are actually there and that the characters are your best mates. Her writing is effortless and her ear for dialogue is impeccable—she's also the right amount of cheeky and has a great sense of humour.
There are many beautiful moments in this layered story. The narrative is funny, endearing, and even heavy at times. McFarlane deftly explores the dynamics of friendship, grief, betrayal, and how life can change in a moment. HOPELESS ROMANTICS is so much more than a spirited rom-com. Worth all the stars!

I loved this book, just as I’ve loved every book Mhairi McFarlane has ever written. The tale starts with two friends meeting two strangers on a sleeper train up to Scotland. The strangers just happen to be going to the same wedding and all four get on famously, two becoming more than just friends. It then transpires that the groom has failed to tell them that the wedding is off but they can have a weekend at the posh hotel venue, already paid for by the bride’s family. This is the standard, will they, won’t they……….when will they boy meets girl story and a couple of times I thought we had got to the end of the story but no, not quite. Without a doubt, Mhairi McFarlane is a good writer and has a great sense of humour, her books always do make me ‘laugh out loud’.. The characters are always likeable and this book is no exception.
My thanks to the author, the publishers and to NetGalley for an advance reader copy of this book.
