Description

With biting wit and lyrical prose, this provocative family portrait explores relationships, regret, and the invisible facets connecting us all.

When antique toy dealer Artie Civil disappears before a family dinner party, it tests his wife Margaret in ways she never imagined. Worried that Artie is up to something she doesn’t want to admit, she keeps his disappearance to herself, making excuses for his absence as the day progresses.

Margaret’s daughter Julia is a renowned psychologist hiding more than one addiction. Determined to host the perfect dinner that night, she makes decent strides, until her youngest daughter has an alarming premonition about Artie, setting in motion big changes for not just the party, but Julia's entire career.

Meanwhile, Margaret’s grandchild Kelly is planning to reveal something important to her mother Sydnie before the party. But when Sydnie unwittingly foils the plan due to a secret of her own, they both find themselves in each other’s confidences.

Later, with the party in full swing, a shocking tragedy sends everyone to the hospital. It is there, over the course of several hours, where the family transforms, changing in ways they never thought possible. But what secret is Margaret still clinging to? And what does it mean for her future?

Set over the course of one highly charged and chaotic day, this darkly humorous and exhilarating debut holds a mirror to the shifting collective consciousness of our times, reflecting on the relationships of mothers and daughters, the pain of regret, and the splendor of knowing oneself—as we bear witness to a family discovering what it means to live their truth.

With biting wit and lyrical prose, this provocative family portrait explores relationships, regret, and the invisible facets connecting us all.

Thank you to #NetGalley and the author Tiffany Blaine for the opportunity to read an advanced copy!

This story opens with Margaret, a wife, mother and grandmother to what appears to be the perfect nuclear family. She's married to Artie, has two daughters, Julia and Sydnie and some grandchildren. The story unfolds prior to a dinner party for the family at Julie’s gorgeous immaculate home with everything planned to the T by Julia, like everything else she does; perfection is her goal.

Over a relatively short period of time, the reader gets an inside look at the inner thoughts and feelings of the main characters. The grandchildren also carry secrets and are often overshadowed by the adults in the room leaving little time for them to be as open with their parents as perhaps they would like. Thus, cracks in the family show at all levels.

Artie does not show up at the dinner party throwing everything in disarray and suddenly hidden secrets are revealed. Can this family ever recover and live with what was and what will be? Will their relationships strengthen with this understanding?

I loved the book and the writing style! The characters somehow pull you in from the very beginning. There is something in each one that is relatable and traits that drive the reader to want to know more. The characterization is one of the best I have read. Because of the understanding the writing gives to the inner workings of the women, it aids in understanding the complexities and dynamics of their relationships.

The descriptions, as the story unfolds, are written in a way you can easily picture who these people are, what they are seeing and a sense of their true persona, not the projected one.
The twists in the story show the ripples and cracks in the individuals and how this plays out in the family. Each one is a piece of the puzzle. To feel whole, they need to not only get real with themselves but with each other. These women struggle to attain that. The goodness and happiness they desire can only happen, aka the light, when they become authentic to each other and to themselves.
********I look forward to future reads by this author!

This somewhat of a psychological thriller. It is about families and each others secrets. There are twists and turns. I like when the author pulls me into the story as if I was one of her characters. This story did not disappoint me. Loved it!

i was totally immersed in this story. i love it how books get us involved and right into the centre of a group. and in this case we are right in the centre of a family. it feels so close and personal its almost like we shouldn't know or see this. and its also such a reminder that we truly dont know what people are going through and what snapshots we do and dont see of people lives. in this family we get pulled into an emotional unravelling of sorts and we see this happen over one day. the family all seem to be holding onto something and not able to hold onto these something in many cases. each of our generations felt compelling to read about. they are all with their own issues and you can see how that both effects others, themselves and the ripples we dont always see but definitely feel.
the family dynamics of this one takes you to whole new levels of tension. i felt like was a guest at a party that i should just slowly back out of sometimes! but in the best way that Tiffany got me right in the middle of it with them. i do love it when character driven books get you like this. you want to know more but also feel so much and become emotionally involved yourself!
i loved how Tiffany really steps you inside this family. there is a party planned. but all these family members are holding onto something or holding it together in different ways. its like a pressure keg for them all. when the man of the hour doesn't show it feels like someone pulled the peg out. but it clearly had been happening before that. i loved how we get to see inside all the generations. and they all felt important. some relatable and some not but all someone you wanted to listen to, maybe because some very much weren't being listened to or have space for them to.
i felt like somehow i knew what these member would look or speak like. they became known and that is skill of Tiffany for creating them in my head like that. they mattered now. and so i then felt more and more compelled to know where this might lead for them all. and how they might be at the end of it all.
would they be ok?
would they share, listen, talk?
i really enjoyed this book. Tiffany's books was so inviting and engrossed me into this family, this one event far too much, but i mean that as such a compliment!
i really cant wait to read more from this author as i love books like this when done well. and this one for me was done so very well.
