Jenny Foley – divorced and struggling to make ends meet as a dog walker in the Boston suburb of Windermere – befriends a recently-arrived Scottish au pair, Lindsay Shaw. When Lindsay dies in a brutal, well-publicized murder, Jenny begins to suspect that the killer is one of her clients, an unlovely mix of lawyers, doctors, financial types, and idle rich. 

Are Don and Cissy Chandler, the young owners of a Gilded Age mansion and Lindsay’s former employers, behind the young Scot’s death? What does Mary McReynolds, the Machiavellian candidate for city council, know? Where does Chris Woo, the co-owner of two rambunctious black labs, sneak off to on supposed business trips? Who is the haughty Helena de Mint’s mysterious guest? Why is the dour Trish Whalen, a pathologist, exhuming an old pet from her backyard? When did criminal defense lawyer Alex Gillespie start carrying a gun again?

So many questions…        

The problem, Jenny soon discovers, is that there are far too many questions, and far too many suspects. Can she and her newest employee, the underemployed philosophy Ph.D. Craig Lambert, find the killer before he or she strikes again? And will Jenny’s and Craig’s growing friendship lead to romance … or to a shallow grave in New Hampshire?
