Description

Step out of the shadows and discover a new magical world crackling with power… The Hexton Chronicles: The Trouble with Magic, the first in a dark new fantasy series from highly-acclaimed author Amy Wilson.

When Fray’s hidden magic is accidentally revealed, he flees to Hexton for protection – a magical town of Spellers from which his family was exiled years ago after an unspeakable betrayal, one which has fractured the very foundations of Hexton’s magic. With no one to trust and nowhere to turn, Fray must decide what he wants for himself as he comes up against people who see his very name as a curse and others who believe he might have the solution they’ve been searching for.

Amy Wilson has crafted an immersive world that will linger with readers long after the final page—perfect for fans of Kiran Milwood Hargrave and Anna James.

At its heart lies an unsettling reminder: the seeds of magic within us all don't always grow into something good…

The Hexton Chronicles: The Trouble with Magic is an exciting and atmospheric fantasy novel that invites you into a magical world filled with secrets, danger, and intrigue. Amy Wilson is a master storyteller whose narrative is engaging, featuring intriguing characters and a great sense of darkness that is sure to keep you reading from page to page. Fray's quest of finding his place in the world and discovering himself is not only exciting but emotional as well.

Firstly, a huge thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for this early read.
The Hexton Chronicles: The Trouble with Magic is more than a book about Magic; it is a book about finding your place in a world where, despite similarities, you are regarded as different.
Fray has lived away from Hexton, the town of his birth, since the catastrophic incident that broke people's links to magic and has tried to hide within shadows. He's tried and failed to be accepted, but now with Old Skeg gone, he's returning in the hope of finding what it means to belong.
This is a hugely entertaining and engaging read, not only because of the wonder of magic and the storytelling within, but also because it can be used as a conduit to invite discussion around considering how those who have been forced from their homes want to have a sense of belonging. In my humble opinion, this is more than just a wonderful read, it is a story that develops empathy, a story about family, about friendship and about acceptance. It is a much needed read.
