Description
Bloomsbury presents The Good Listener by Holly Watt, read by Nicola Burgess.
An anonymous call. A mother desperate for justice.
The Good Listeners are there for anyone who needs to talk.
When the phone rings, a Good Listener has no idea who could be at the other end. The woman cheating on her husband, the man who has lost yet another job, the teenager struggling at school...
And Clara is prepared for every kind of caller. Except this one.
Because the woman on the other end of the line has just told her ‘my husband killed a little girl.’
And two years ago, Clara’s own daughter was murdered and her killer never caught.
The police have no leads. This is Clara's only chance of justice. But when the caller is anonymous, what chance does she have of finding them?

The Good Listener by Holly Watt follows Clara, a volunteer taking anonymous calls, whose life changes when a caller claims her husband committed a murder that may be connected to Clara’s own past.
This is a gripping and cleverly constructed book that immediately draws you in with its premise. The anonymity of the calls creates a constant sense of tension, making every interaction feel significant and uncertain.
Clara is a compelling main character, driven by grief and the need for answers. Her personal connection to the case adds emotional depth, raising the stakes as she begins to piece things together.
The pacing works really well, with twists that are carefully placed and genuinely surprising. Even as the story progresses, there are still moments that shift your expectations, keeping you fully engaged.
The writing is immersive, and the characters feel well developed, adding to the overall impact of the story.
A tense and engaging mystery that delivers both emotional weight and plenty of twists.

I have to say, I was genuinely impressed by “The Good Listener” by Holly Watt. It’s a book that completely captivated me from start to finish, which is a rare feat in this crowded genre. The story revolves around Clara, who volunteers as a crisis helpline worker—an act of kindness that also gives her a much-needed escape from the pain of her own tragic past. Her daughter was murdered two years earlier, and since then, Clara has been desperately seeking answers and justice.
What drew me in right from the beginning was how well-researched and cleverly plotted the novel is. Holly Watt masterfully builds the tension, starting at a slower pace that gradually escalates into a gripping and unputdownable story once Clara receives that life-changing call. The caller’s revelation—that her husband killed a little girl—shattered everything Clara thought she knew, and it set my mind racing trying to piece together what was real and what wasn’t.
The character of Clara is so well-developed; her grief, her desperation, and her cautious hope all felt incredibly authentic. Watt captures her emotional depth beautifully, making every moment of her pain and longing palpable. The audiobook narration by Nicola Burgess added an extra layer of immersion, making the emotional beats hit even harder.
I found the plot to be both suspenseful and thought-provoking, especially as it delves into themes of justice, truth, and the complexity of human relationships. The slow build made the eventual revelation even more impactful. I did find, at times, that the story felt a bit repetitive, and with so many characters and names, it was sometimes tricky to keep track, especially in audiobook form. The ending, particularly the last section, felt a little contrived to me—too dramatic and wrapped up with a neat bow, which slightly lessened the realism I was craving. Still, I appreciated the twists and the unpredictable nature of the story; I genuinely couldn’t guess how it would conclude.
Overall, I’d say “The Good Listener” is a compelling, emotionally charged thriller that explores heavy themes with sensitivity and intelligence. It kept me hooked, made me think, and even brought a few tears. Holly Watt is an author I’ll definitely be exploring further—this book was a fantastic introduction. If you enjoy thrillers that combine suspense with emotional depth, I highly recommend giving this one a try.

Every parent’s worse nightmare - losing a child. Clara’s daughter was murdered and her killer never found. As so often happens in tragedies, her marriage did not survive. So now 2 years later, Clara is divorced and volunteering at an anonymous call center (helpline). One day she receives a call from a woman who claims that her husband has killed a child. Could this woman’s husband be the same one that killed her daughter ? Will Clara make a dangerous choice that may trigger unexpected consequences ?
I connected with Clara in her desperate attempts to bring the killer to justice. This book had me turning the pages as fast as I could to find out what happened. It’s atmospheric, full of tension and suspense. I highly recommend it.
It’s getting harder and harder to impress me in this category, so I was completely awestruck at how captivated I was by The Good Listener.
Well researched, cleverly plotted and exceptionally well executed I was enthralled for every single word.
Clara volunteers as a good listener, a crisis helpline, it’s a way for her to get out of the house and out of her own head, because the last years have been hell for her, since her daughters murder. During her calls she hears from all kinds of people in all kinds of turmoil (trigger warnings apply) but one caller in particular makes her abandon all the rules set when she tells her her husband killed a little girl, is this an understandably difficult coincidence or is Clara right to want to hear from the caller more?

Huge thanks to Bloomsbury Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this ALC 🎧
This book was so gripping. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to piece together what was happening & found myself reaching for it at every spare moment. I’ve been on such a strong run of thrillers lately & it’s reminded me exactly why this was the genre I first fell in love with.
There were so many moments that gave me GOOSEBUMPS & more than a few that genuinely made me tear up. The main character, Clara, is written with such care & depth that every ounce of her emotion & pain felt so real. Watt captures her grief & her desperate need for answers beautifully.
The story starts at a slower pace while the tension quietly builds, but once Clara receives the call that changes everything, the pacing sharpens & it becomes impossible to put down. My own line of work overlaps in some ways, which made the difficult or emotional calls feel especially authentic & impactful.
Watt is a new author to me & I’ll definitely be looking out for more of her work. If you’re after a bingeable thriller that delivers both suspense & heart, I can’t recommend this enough! 👏🏽

The Good Listener was a great story, very well narrated and I enjoyed the range of characters and the pace.. The story drew me in immediately and the way the story unfolds with many possibilities of who is responsible for the murder kept me guessing. Thank you to NetGalley for an audio arc in exchange for an honest review.

This felt like nothing I’d ever read before, with a unique premise and unsettling set up, this intricately woven thriller is full of heart and determination. Clara is a wonderfully written character, resilient, calm and strong, all whilst being utterly formidable in the face of every parent’s worst nightmare. Multiple unreliable narrators will keep you guessing, with the ending being brilliantly executed!
I loved the narrator on the audio for this, her voice being full of emotion, I found this a struggle to stop listening to!

A brilliant thriller novel. I listened to this audiobook over 3 days, the narration was excellent, every detail down to the different voices were perfectly delivered. I felt the premise and story in this book is very unique and unlike anything I have read before. The concept of the lead character working as a volunteer at a Samaritans style call centre works perfectly to build the mystery and tension. Started a little slow but the pace of the story increased rapidly and was worth the build. Highly recommended.
4.5*
I loved the setting of this book—a Samaritans-type call centre—which felt well-researched and intriguing. Clara’s young daughter was murdered two years ago, and now she volunteers at the call centre. One day, a woman calls in claiming her husband killed a child, and Clara becomes determined to uncover the caller’s identity. Clara was such a compelling character—heartbroken and constantly doubting herself, yet unwavering in her mission to find her daughter’s killer. I flew through the first part of the book but found the pace slowed a little in the second half. This is a clever story with plenty of twists which kept me guessing. It touches sensitively on some difficult subjects.
I loved the narration by Nicola Burgess, which added to my enjoyment.
